Friday I was fortunate enough to have lunch with both my daughters. Then yesterday my next door neighbor Irvina and I went to lunch. It was the first time we’d gone anywhere together in the year she’s lived here.
Irvina is a home health nurse, but she’s turning 62 this month and is cutting way back on her work load and beginning her social security benefits. Her work has meant a lot of being gone overnight.
It was nice to get to sit in a restaurant and chat with her. I hope we get to do it more.

I need some advice. I have this sore on the inside of my right cheek that has been there about 4 years. I think I originally bit too hard and caused trauma to the inside of the cheek, and it just never went down much.
Time and again I am eating and happen to bite down on it, which is when it gets extremely sore and enlarges. It is now nearly a half inch across and raised about a quarter inch in size. It is right inside my mouth not far from my lip.
I tried to take a photo to show you, but I couldn’t get one holding my camera out while holding my lower lip down.
I know I need to do something about it. I just don’t know if you go to a doctor or a dentist for something like this. But it’s to the point now that I can hardly eat around it without biting it and causing even more pain.
Plus over the past few months I have had little white sores on my tongue. I don’t know what that is either.
I have been using a pro health Crest mouth wash and hoping that helps somehow.

When I see my primary care doctor, I often intend to show her the raised sore in my mouth, but then I either forget about it because it isn’t hurting or we run out of time.
I should have done something about this long ago, but the ulcer or sore or whatever it is will go down a little bit and not be painful for awhile and I will kind of forget about it.
Now I’m going to have to take action. Anyone have ideas or experience with this type of thing?

I notice my teeth are hurting too. I haven’t been to the dentist in 3-4 years. But I think I’m clenching my teeth when Charlie is hacking and coughing because of my inability to do anything to help him.
I take a women’s over 50 multivitamin, Vitamin D, L-Lysine and probably a few more supplements I’m forgetting. I think it’s the stress over Charlie that is causing much of this because I’m so worried and tired all the time.
Charlie started getting sick just a few weeks after I lost Abi, so there hasn’t been much time to recoup. Thank goodness Ivy has been healthy.
Last night I got a fairly good night’s sleep. Yesterday afternoon I laid down in my recliner with a throw over me and though I can’t sleep in the daytime, I just rested for 30-45 minutes. One of you mentioned doing that.
Sorry to be a Debbie Downer today. I just need advice on some things I’ve let fall to the wayside until I can’t anymore.

In apartment complex news, we have no maintenance men and no apartment manager. We are just here, the residents, with no one to call or help us if something happens.
I heard from someone who usually knows and has lived here for 16 years that they did at least hire a manager. She was here for a day or part of a day and left and never came back, he told me.
He lives close to the office and usually knows what’s happening.

I shudder to think of something major happening. Because we have no one to go to or call. We’re just in new ownership limbo. Isn’t that crazy?
I guess if something happens that we can’t fix, we’ll just have to call in someone to fix it on our own.
The phone number is the same and eventually an answering machine will answer. But it’s the one for the old owners with the different apartment name.
I’ve gone to the office during the week day and no one is there. My next door neighbor says she’s done the same with the same results.
It’s a bit unnerving.
With this going on, the new owners are not getting off to a great start with us.

GET THEE TO A DENTIST STAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, Brenda ~ this is nothing to mess around with. Call around Monday AM; go to see anyone who can see you as soon as possible.
Hugs ~
Brenda says
I guess I’ll just have to pick a dentist online. The last dentist I had the last two times I went (which is why I haven’t gone back) I ended up with shingles or some sores in my mouth within 48 hours of seeing them. Which is why my doctor insisted on the shingles vaccine.
Betsy says
I had a sore/bump/big ouch, on the inside of my cheek many many years ago, it started when I wore braces. It took several years for it to finally go down. My dentist said it was scar tissue from chomping on the inside of my cheek so much when I wore braces. I do agree, that you should see a dentist or a doctor. It doesn’t matter which. Either one of them will be able to tell you what it is, maybe they will take a swab and see if maybe you have an infection. PS I’ve never posted a comment to you before, but I read your blog all the time. I really like it.
Sandy says
Brenda, my suggestion is to call your dentist about your mouth. They are the experts in that area and can direct you if they are not the appropriate resource. Write down your concerns while you are thinking of it, and put it by the phone. That way when you call the dentist tomorrow morning you will remember. Also, discuss a mouth guard for when you sleep at night to protect your teeth if you are under that much stress. You may be damaging your teeth and the dentist can check for you. The dentist will want to sell you an expensive one, but disregard that. Go to your local Walgreens or CVS and they have the type you boil and shape to your mouth. They are very cheap. When I was getting divorced I started to ruin my teeth by grinding them in my sleep due to stress. The dentist wanted me to get an expensive mouth guard from them and I couldn’t afford it. My boss at the time was an ex football player and he told me about the kind you get at Walgreens. He said they won’t last as long, but who cares? Go get more for $10. They saved my teeth, most definitely. I believe you can also buy them on Amazon as well.
Also, you may wish to consider Natural Calm. It is a powdered magnesium that you can put in your water or juice and it is just that: calming. You can buy that almost anywhere, including Amazon. For me it was far more effective than the capsule type supplement magnesium. Please do your own research as you know what’s best for you, but it worked wonders for me.
Good luck.

I’ve been on Clonazapam for years. I mg divided twice per day. I take things for anxiety too.

Great advice! I don’t want to scare you but……you need to see a dr. or dentist now. Don’t let Dentist do any work on the sore, that is doctor work. Prayers for you!

Definitely a trip to your dentist for the mouth sore.
Diana says
Please see a dentist ASAP and then all of us should see one at least once a year but as we get older even more. I get a cleaning 3-4 times a year but have had trouble with my
teeth all my life. Going more often will help us keep our own teeth if we are lucky.
Brenda says
I haven’t gone because the last two times I’ve ended up with Shingles or something in my mouth and couldn’t even eat for a week. They show up within 48 hours. Who wants to go to the dentist knowing that’s going to happen?
Patricia says
I’m so sorry to hear this – I get mouth sores also and they are terribly painful. I would call your dentist, ( maybe he can prescribe a rinse) but in the meantime, try a toothpaste that DOES NOT contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate ( SLS). I really suffered for years with painful mouth sores so I did quite a bit of research and this was mentioned often. It does seem to help. Trader Joes makes a toothpaste without SLS that is a good price so I stock up when Im there.
Betsy says
I get my teeth cleaned three times a year to Diana. It’s so worth it.
Peg says
I’d do some research and attempt to find out who the new owner is. Surely a deed has been recorded in your local clerk and recorder’s office. Once you hopefully have a name, contact the state office in your state that is responsible for the licensing of corporations, LLCs, etc. I’d goggle it because I think all of these are now online. Should be contact information there. I’d also check with the agency in your state that handles aging and related concerns. Are there any local agencies who do work with aging? Didn’t you say one of your daughters is a realtor? I’d put a bug in her ear to ask around about who bought your complex. If I think of more ideas, I’ll write another post.
Brenda says
I know the LLC who bought it because they put a notice on our door. But they’re from out of state.
Gail Grooms says
Get your local tv station on it.
Andrea R. says
Great suggestion.
Peg says
Yes, what Gail Grooms said, call a local tv station. It really doesn’t matter if the new owner is an out-of-state LLC. There’s so much information available online these days. I still think you-and your neighbors-should contact the OK agency that deals with matters on aging, safe housing, etc.
barb says
All You said is a very good idea – if the majority of residents are elderly, this sounds like a law being broken – Elderly residents should not be left without someone to take care of maintenance of things in their apartments – Definitely find an advocate for all at the apartment complex – It sure sounds like Your rights are being violated!!! barb
Gina Brown says
I have a couple of places like that in my mouth, my dentist called them traumatic fibromas. I had developed a habit of chewing on the inside of my mouth as a nervous habit. He is going to refer me to an oral surgeon to have them removed. I do clench my teeth too (darn that stress!) at night. I bought a $16 night guard at Walgreens and that took care of that. Hope this helps!
Brenda says
I looked that up and this sounds like what it is.
Andrea R. says
Brenda-I have a bump on the inside of my cheek caused by a sharp broken tooth. I bit my cheek hard before I could get the tooth fixed. My wonderful trustworthy dentist of 25 years checked it out. It is scar tissue.
Please get a referral from your daughters or people you know and see a new dentist ASAP.
Meanwhile, Campophenique applied with a q-tip to mouth sores helps.
Laura Walker says
WOW, I am not even sure where to start. I think you need to see a dentist for the sore in your mouth. The white sores could be from stress, a virus, or you could be allergic to the toothpaste you are using etc. I cannot believe there is no one at your apartment complex to contact. You need to contact the housing authority to let them know. It sounds to me like they are trying to make everyone that lives there mad so that they will move out.It makes you wonder what their plans are for your complex. I;m so sorry that you are having to deal with all of this. xo Laura
Brenda says
I also keep getting what I assume are canker sores on the inside of my mouth. Last week I had two. They were gone pretty quick.
Carol Valencia says
I recommend seeing a dermatologist. There are disorders that cause blisters in the oral cavity. Especially since it has been there for so long.
Brenda says
I have an appointment with one I made in October. Can’t get in till December.
Pat says
Please…get thee to the dentist ASAP! If, for some reason they cannot treat the issue, they will reccomend another professional. Soooo much stress in your life and it’s extremely damaging to your health.
I suggest calling the City Manager and/or Mayor about the Apt situation. So very sad that people can treat others this way. It’s dangerous too for the residents ~ any type of problem could arise…leaking gas or water, electrical issues. Without regular maintenance to keep an eye on things could result in all types of problems.
I have been taking 8G from Amazon and it is amazing! There’s no way a person could eat all the green veggies contained in one tablet! Drop it in a glass of water and when the fizzy stops, mix with a spoon and drink up! 😊 It has a lemon/lime taste and could be mixed in a smoothie I guess. It gives you energy without any adverse reactions. I have macular degeneration and the eye Dr recommends lots of green veggies. I also take Areds twice a day. Bottom line, it will be good for you and provide a natural form of energy.
Also, do you take extra B vitamin supplements? If not, get the sublingual drops of B12. Very good for you! Medicare won’t pay for B12 shots so my Dr recommended the sublingual drops.
I do hope that everything improves for you very soon! 😊🙏❤
Pat Gaudreau says
I agree on calling a dentist ASAP,our mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria due to the moist warm environment.
I would make a legal call about putting your rent into an account until you find out what’s going on with the takeover of this company, sounds shady to me,my late hubby was a residential superintendent before he went commercial and the standard operating procedure is to retain the current employees until the new ones are familiar with the site…be careful!
Carole OConnor says
Yes, a visit to the dentist is what you need to do soon. Perhaps your doctor can suggest a few dentists to you. I use something called Grind no More, that are disposable guards to use to help protect your teeth from clenching or grinding. You get 15 in a box for a little over $20 and use them a few times. They could be a temporary help until your dentist takes care of it. But do get that sore spot looked at before it becomes even more serious.
Terry says
I take an antibiotic before seeing the dentist.bacteria from dental work can settle in joints and my knees have been replaced. However, maybe ask about that if you have a sore in your mouth so bacteria doesn’t settle there. I just rake one dose before treatment.
Lynda says
You have a lot of company in the clenching department. I end up with pain in my lower front teeth. Or sometimes I do it with my jaws misaligned, resulting in pain all the way up through my ear. Previous poster mentioned the mouth guards you can get everywhere. I use a warm heat pack (microwave rice in a sock) to relax the area and relieve pain. I’m sorry that you have all these aggravations to deal with at once. You can only do one day at a time, so much easier to say than to do. Hope your week ends better than it’s starting.
Leslie aven says
CALL THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
ASK THEM FOR THE NUMBER THAT THEY WOULD CALL IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION AT THE COMPLEX !
THERE SHOULD BE ONE ON FILE, HOPEFULLY THE NEW OWNER LEFT ONE !
Elizabeth says
That is a great idea.
Claude Ratliff says
When I get canker sores (a life-long problem for me) I do 2000 mg of L-Lysine in the morning and 2000 at night with noticeable improvement the next day. I continue with that dosage until the sores are completely gone. Others have given you best advice about the three year old sore. Personally, I would start with my GP. Dentist might work as well.
Apartment Complex? Wow! If I could afford it I would just move. If I couldn’t afford it I would make a list of all the apartments and go door to door and organize a renters association, find out where the owners are, obtain legal help, and stage lobbying and activist activities. When I was in my senior year at EKU I interned for a legal services non-profit. They were developing a class-action case against public housing. I organized the renters association for them and conducted groups and a survey. The renters won.
Best of luck.

Hi Brenda, Re: your mouth sores: since Monday is a federal holiday, you will probably find dentists’ offices closed. You could call your PCP and ask to have someone call you back. They have someone on call during the weekend who at least could advise you. In the meantime you might want to rinse your mouth with salt mixed with warm water. I have done this with sores in my mouth and it does help.
Since you now have received your shingles vaccine you really should be seeing a dentist. Bacteria in the mouth can sometimes lead to heart problems, which is why I take a dose of Amoxicillin prior to any dental work. You’ve gotten some really good advice today from all those who love and care about you. Just handle one issue at a time. Somehow the apt problem will be resolved. If you have an emergency, I agree with Leslie, call the police. But as my mother would’ve said, don’t go out to meet any problems. You’re on my prayer list today, Brenda.
Chi Chi Mum says
Think good advice from Alice(and Mom :8)) .. “don’t go out and meet any problems”, as you like most of us, have a full plate anyhow. If you have some needs and call and cannot get help there at the complex..I would document/document…and then if you have to pay someone…hopefully can receive reimbursement. 911, of course, always there for an emergency situation. But I am sure that is an uneasy feeling knowing no one is watching/monitoring activity there, though. …… That is so miserable when you have sores in your mouth..hope you can get it resolved. As far as dentists, perhaps you could ask your Family and Friends who they go to…as I always feel better if someone can tell me they are good one(s).. My dentist told me the guard was needed..$600 from them to make a custom one…insurance would cover zero… assistant at dental office suggested the store ones others have discussed above. I sure hope you feel better soon. Glad you are taking a time out even if cannot sleep in daytime. Take care ..prayers and blessings your way.
Mary H says
Maybe contact your local city councilman and let them know what the situation is with your complex. Hopefully, they would be interested since it is their district.
Peggy Minisi says
Brenda, I used the same toothpaste for years. I bought Crest Pro Health toothpaste because it was a great price on sale. Big mistake. After using it only two times, I had a terrible metallic taste on my tongue and could not taste food for about two weeks. Fortunately, I made the connection to the new toothpaste immediately and stopped using it. I did some research online and was so surprised to see some of the reviews for Crest Pro Health products. You may want to do some research and read the reviews and complaints and the problems some people have had with it. Sending healing thoughts your way.
Brenda says
Looked up some reviews. Maybe the mouth wash is causing the tongue sores and pain?
Peggy Minisi says
I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to stop using it and see what happens.
Bobbie Henderson says
Dentist! ASAP. Mouth sores are nothing to fool around with.
And, I agree about calling the police if anything goes wrong.
Jan says
Re apartment new owner/management: Have you received notification of WHERE and to WHOM you are supposed to pay your rent? If so, if you have an issue that arises, contact them until you are told otherwise. I would also check with your local city government to see if there is a program for withholding rent if a landlord does not respond to requests to do necessary repairs to keep a rental unit habitable! Many cities offer this option – you pay the rent, but it goes to the city to hold in a special account until the landlord complies with his/her/its responsibilities under local codes. Worthwhile checking into.
Re the sore inside your mouth from biting: I went through a period where I was doing that, eating and all of a sudden some of the skin on the inside of my mouth was chomped on! I developed sores on both sides of my mouth, back by the molars. My dentist noted them and we worked on balancing my bite. As you age, your mouth shrinks because muscle mass changes, essentially, and it can affect your bite, as well as stress (continual muscle tension) and decaying or worn down teeth. You should go see a dentist right away, 4 years is WAY too long for this problem to have lingered without healing. It could be that something has gone out of line with your bite and that could be causing part or all of the problem. A dentist will also be able to tell you if you need to go see a doctor (maybe an ears/nose/throat specialist – the dentist should be able to tell you) – if he/she suspects it might be cancerous. This is not something you should delay!
Grinding teeth when you’re sleeping is a side-effect of stress. If you can’t relieve the stress, a dentist may recommend that you have guards fitted to wear at night if the problem is really bad so you don’t cause damage to your teeth.
I know how easy it is to procrastinate, you keep telling yourself, oh it will heal, it will heal, or oh, it’s just a sunspot (large freckle). I had and still have a sunspot on my lower lip, that really started enlarging (spreading wider) after I retired and was spending so much time outdoors in the summer working in my gardens. The dentist kept telling me go see a dermatologist and I kept putting it off. But the sunspot grew to the point where it was very noticeable and people I knew were starting to ask “what’s up with the brown spot on your lip?” I started worrying that maybe it WAS a form of skin cancer, so I finally went to see a dermatologist. A biopsy was taken and it came back negative for cancer – which was a huge relief. I hadn’t realized just how much denial I’d been in or how much stress that, by itself, was causing until I felt the overwhelming sense of relief of at least knowing what it was, and was not. You need to have that kind of worry removed from your shoulders, since this is something you can be pro-active in addressing.
Sandy OToole says
Sometimes you can call the police non-emergency number and they can give you the name/phone of the owner responsible for the building, or they can contact them to ask for an emergency response number for repairs. I hope this works.
I agree with the dentist visit, see if you can get in earlier for emergency/dental pain.
Melanie Riley says
Hi Brenda, you need to get to a dentist or doctor ASAP. Most likely both the sore inside your mouth from constantly biting is from stress – it’s an anxiety/stress reaction to bite the same spot inside your mouth while eating – but then it just keeps making the sore worse. And the bumps on your tongue can also be stress-related or else a reaction to something you’re eating. Best not to second-guess any of this and let a doctor guide you. Ditch the Crest crap – it’s nothing but a bunch of chemicals that are going to make things worse, not better. If you feel you should be rinsing your mouth with something, go with a simple salt water rinse that you make yourself.
xoxo
Eileen says
Get it checked out. My daughter just was fitted for a mouth guard and is in heaven with the results. She said she is sleeping through the night for the first time in years.
I grind my teeth also and I’m going to the dentist also. You may be biting your cheek in your sleep.
Lynda says
Make a dental appt asap. They will check your mouth, give your teeth a good cleaning and tell you what’s going on…
I assume the new owner is still collecting rent checks.. maybe you should include a note with your questions ! That way you know they got it!
Bonnie says
Brenda, please take Jan’s advice above. I was a dental assistant for 12 years, when I graduated from HS, and I agree with her 100%. If your bite is off, it can really do damage. Also ,I take amoxicillin before a dental appointment, so as not to have bacteria spread to my heart. Your dentist will probably prescribe this for you too, I would hope. I have switched from Crest to Colgate, the dentist gives out Crest samples. I just like Colgate more. Good Luck, and good luck with the apartment “people” too. Hugs from WI
Paulette says
I worked for an oral surgeon who dealt with a lot of similar sounding mouth sores, spots, and lesions. People were referred through their dentist, so do start there. Also second the mouth guard idea. Mention it to your dentist that you may be grinding or clenching due to stress. I’ve had one for 20 years (same one), so although it may seem like a pricey initial investment, it’s paid for itself in so many ways.
Veronica says
Brenda,
The best advice I can give you until you see a Dr./dentist, is put the mouthwash down, and rinse your mouth with salt water solution for a few days.
Sometimes we tend to use too many different rinses and toothpastes that affect our natural oral bacteria.
A dentist told me once, to never use mouthwash regularly and I never had an issue again.
BARBARA says
BRENDA: HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT CONTACTING THE MEDIA? YOU COULD CALL THE LOCAL TV STATION AND DESCRIBE SOME OF THE CONCERNS YOU’VE HAD OVER THE PAST, AND SEE IF THEY WOULD DO A STORY ON THE COMPLEX.
I HAD A SPOT ON THE INSIDE OF MY LOWER LIP THAT I IGNORED FOR QUITE AWHILE, AND FINALLY WENT TO A DERMATOLOGIST. HE “BURNED” IT A COUPLE OF TIMES WITH DRY ICE OR SOMETHING…..HURT LIKE HECK!….BUT SINCE HE SAID IT WAS PRE-CANCEROUS, IT NEEDED TO BE DONE.
……IF YOU CAN’T GET IN TO A DENTIST, I’D CALL THE DERMATOLOGIST THAT YOU HAVE AN APPT. WITH AND EXPLAIN YOUR PROBLEM…DOCTORS WILL SPEED UP YOUR APPT WHEN YOU HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM!
IT HELPS WE OLDER PEOPLE TO HAVE A LIST OF TOPICS WHEN WE GO TO A DOCTOR! THAT WAY, OUR CONCERNS ARE ADDRESSED. IF THE DR. IS IN TOO BIG A RUSH, THEN GET ANOTHER DOCTOR!!!!! YOUR MOUTH ULCER IS PROOF THAT A PROBLEM IGNORED/FORGOTTEN JUST GETS WORSE…BETTER TO NIP IT IN THE BUD.
GOOD LUCK!!!!

Hi Brenda,
Looks like you are getting a lot of peeps telling you to start with your dentist first. I guess that would be a good suggestion to see what he thinks make sure it is not something to do with maybe a bad tooth. It sounds more like a medical issue maybe a mucous cyst. If it is a cyst it usually is filled with air or fluid. It if is a tumor they are usually hard masses. Someone either a doctor or dentist should look at it right away. Mouth cancer is usually painless in the early stages where cysts can be painful with infection or fluids building up inside. Again have a dentist or doctor look at it. That would be my RN advice to you. Hope you can get it taken care of. Good luck.

I would go to my Doctor before going to a dentist because my insurance covers for doctor visits a lot better than it does for dentists. I hope you will feel better soon.

Wow, Brenda, there are a lot of us out here who care a lot about you given the number of concerned responses to your problem with the mouth sore. I would echo their advice by saying, yes, definitely see a dentist or your doctor as soon as possible to get it evaluated and possibly treated. If possible try to have it looked at while it’s acting up.
I hope your arm has stopped hurting after that shingles shot. I’m supposed to get one but I’m really loathe to do so as I hear how painful they can be. I’ve had very mild cases of shingles twice so I wonder if I really need to get the shot. Maybe I’ve immunized myself. Ha, ha! Probably not!
Please take care of yourself, Brenda. You deserve it. Plus your fur babies need you to be well, as you already know. Sending you healing tho’ts.

When I had my teeth for my dentures, the dentist suggested rinsing my mouth out with apple cider vinegar and water. It really helped. I use it whenever I get a cold sore inside my mouth or sores from my dentures rubbing on my gums. But you need to see a dentist too.

Sorry I meant when I had my teeth pulled for my dentures. And also add some salt to the vinegar and water solution

I have that same “biting the same spot in my cheek” situation. It goes away (as far as I notice), then I’ll bite it again and it swells up, sort of in a line, right? A thick line. I don’t think it’s a problem, I’ve never mentioned it to my dentist.
However, after 3-4 years you should definitely see a dentist and tell him about the spots and this cheek thing.
Also, when I’m stressed, my TMJ rises to a mountaintop level, which causes one or two of my teeth on the right side to hurt so bad I am certain I have a cavity. The hygienist always asks, “Are you clenching your teeth due to stress?” The answer is always yes. X-rays show no cavities.
Hope this helps a bit.
Dianne says
When I go to the dentist my mouth breaks out, too. It is the stress on my gums from the stretching.
