Today I’m going to show you 10 ways to decorate with jute or rope that I located online. These DIY’s are very clever and cheap as well.
For some reason I got to wondering what kinds of DIYs other people have come up with using rope or jute. So I went searching on Pinterest to see what I could find out.
Rope Placemats:
City Farmhouse came up with this one. These placemats resemble ones that came from Pottery Barn. But they didn’t. She shows you how to make them here.
Woven Rope Pendant:
I love this woven rope pendant. Design Sponge did this one. You can find the instructions to make it here.
DIY Rope Candle Holder:
Four Generations One Roof came up with these cute candle holders. She shows you how she did it here.
DIY Coastal Wreath:
This is a great dollar store craft by The Latina Nextdoor. I think it’s beautiful and so creative. She shows you how to make it here.
Rope Ottoman:
Ottomans are a hot commodity right now. Here’s a project that uses just a tire and rope. This particular DIY is from Style Me Pretty. They show you how here.
Rope Plant Container:
I love my house plants. But the containers would look a lot better wrapped in rope. This is from Collective Gen and they show you how to do it here.
Rope/Sisal Covered Tray:
This makes great use of an old pizza pan. I’d have just tossed it. But a DIYer sees all kinds of possibilities. Inspired Decorator shows you how she did it here.
Rope Mirror:
I’ve used jute to decorate the wood around a mirror before, but it was rectangular. I love this one! Modern Day Moms shows you the tutorial here.
Rope Planter/Waste Basket:
This is used as a planter, but you could also use it as a waste basket. And what a pretty one it would be at that. This one comes from Windmill & Protea. She shows you how to do it here.
These are placemats. But if you made it bigger it could be a rug. A DIY rug has to be way cheaper than one from a store. You can find the instructions from Completely Coastal for this DIY here.

These are all good ideas. On “Battle on the Beach” on HGTV one of the teams made a light to hang over a table from a plastic plant pot turned upside down and wrapped in jute. It got rave reviews from the judges and they said it looked like a high-end item.

Wow, I like this post and your helpful referrals. Years ago (probably 25) I made a mirror with heavy duty anchor jute rope and sea shells over a piece of wood. My husband cut the wood to look like an arched window. It was hung over a driftwood console table outside and under a covered patio. When we sold the house the new owners bought all my outdoor furn. and the fountain. They said our entry and backyard sealed the deal!
Wow, that sounds beautiful! I don’t know if I want to take on rope in a DIY or not. Mulling it over.
Great suggestions! I am going to do the ottoman and the pizza pan tray. I have a couple of pizza pans that I never use and we have several old tires that I was waiting for special pick up to get rid of them, but I’ll keep two to make the ottoman!
Sounds like a plan to me! Upcycling is always good. Helps the environment too.
