Yesterday I decided to do some cleaning and rearranging of my open kitchen cabinets.
I love open cabinets. Just take the doors off and that’s it. If you rent, like me, just save the doors in a closet and put them back on when you move.
Years ago I did have to paint the insides of the cabinets white. But after that was done, I was good to go.
No Dust Problem:
Some people complain about dust in their open kitchen cabinets. But I never see much dust at all.
I cleaned the shelves with a dishcloth yesterday and there was no dust. I can’t explain why this is so. But I’m glad it is!
I don’t have a stove, so grease does not splatter my kitchen. With my Kitchenaid convection oven, any grease that is created is contained within.
I think this is at least part of why my open cabinets don’t get dirty or attract grease.
Using Just A Convection Oven To Cook:
I have to say I like having a convection oven over having a large appliance stove. It doesn’t heat up the place and I never have to worry that I left something on. All that is automatically taken care of.
I switched up some of the things I already had in my cabinets. Just a few things here and there.
I also added a fall cinnamon spice candle to make the kitchen smell nice.
Red & White Transferware:
I’m still in love with the red and white transferware I collected from here and there. I don’t have a lot. Just enough to create interest and bring in more red and white.
Here are a couple of my favorite small pitchers, or creamers, or whatever they’re officially called.
I found almost all of the red and white transferware on Etsy. And a couple on eBay.
Here are some of the things I ordered for my kitchen. They’re mostly from Amazon.com. Although some came from Tuesday Morning and Walmart.com.
Some of the things I would have otherwise listed are no longer available.
Links To Items In My Kitchen:
- Bread box: Stainless steel bread box – $30.83 (Walmart.com) Here’s one at Amazon that is a little cheaper – $24.99
- Single serve K cup for 1 – They are no longer selling this one, but here’s a very similar one that’s about the same price. – $56.95 (and there is currently a $15 coupon you can use)
- I got my white dishes at Target some years ago. But they no longer carry them. Here are the same ones being sold at Amazon – $37.99 for a 12 piece set
- Red knife block – I bought mine years ago, but here is a similar one at Amazon by Cuisinart – $57.58
Now if I can just summon the energy to tackle the two walk-in closets in my bedroom.

Your transferware is so pretty!!!! I love your open cabinets!
I can’t believe you just took the doors off of these cabinets, Brenda, that is so cool! They look like custom built ins! One of my sisters is in the process of trying to decide between an open and closed storage system so I’m definitely going to let her know about this option. Love the way you have everything styled and displayed too. It’s really beautiful with your transferware collection! Hope your day is a fun one, CoCo
I love your open cabinets! It is always nice to see our treasures instead of having them behind a door. Transferware is one of my favorite things to collect, I love the brown!
I love the brown transferware as well. I did have a beautiful brown platter, but managed to break it.
I do think that because you don’t have a stove that it helps with the lack of dust in your cupboards. I love your red and white dishes and I have a hen on the nest just like that. In fact I have a collection of several hens on the nest. Your kitchen is so pretty!
I do too.
Looks so pretty, Brenda! You’ve got me thinking that maybe I should take the doors off my cabinets in our Florida apartment. It’s a teeny kitchen, but it would make it feel bigger. Hmmmm….
It does make the room feel bigger. I can attest to that.
Your open cabinets are so pretty with how you have everything so beautifully displayed.
I rarely use my oven anymore since it’s just the two of us. I use my large Breville toaster oven instead. So nice that it doesn’t heat up the house.
I’ve had Brevilles and they are great!
Love your red and white kitchen! I love blue and white, so that’s my thing. How is sweet Ivy girl? Maybe a pic or two soon? And I’ll bet that she would like to help you tackle those closets – lol!
Mary
I’m afraid before I get them cleaned out Ivy will get lost in one of them!
I so agree, that one does not miss an oven when you have a toaster oven. I love mine too! The oven here is used for storing some of the bigger things that will not fit in cupboards.
I’ve used my dishwasher to store things.
Brenda, I so enjoy seeing the way you decorate your home. I look at a few other blogs, most of them big homes that the blogger is very proud of, as she should be, but to me they’re just so cookie cutter. They all do it the same, white, beige, gray, which to me is just so boring. You’ve made your small apartment such a comfy place with so much personality!
Well, I can’t afford to decorate the way many of the bloggers can. I don’t want all the expensive appliances and cookie-cutter design ideas.
I don’t have a stove either. I don’t miss it at all. Like you, I have a convection oven and love it. Since my kitchen is small, I would rather have extra counter space opposed to a bulky stove. I also have open cabinets where I display my collection of white soup tureens, pitchers, gravy boats, etc. Since my color scheme is basically black and white with red accents, I’m thinking that I should add some red to the open cabinets. What could I use other than red and white transfers are? I am seriously thinking of ordering the Gibson elite cottage dishes to mix in with the all white dishes. These are the pretty red and white dishes you showed us with the winter scene. What do you think?
Those Gibson dishes are just lovely. If you like them go for it.
I recently bought the little coffee pot you have shown. It is wonderful. So
Easy to use. And if you aren’t into the Kcups you can use your own coffee grounds. The coupon is great. Love your red transfer ware.
Those little coffee makers don’t take up much room and even though just around $50, mine just keeps plugging along.
A Good Fall Morning to you Brenda,
I got up this morning to let Lucy go potty and (gasp) it was downright chilly! I turned on my computer (early for me) while I brewed a pot of coffee. Cloudy and 53 degrees here in Elma, Washington. It really feels like fall all of a sudden.
I adore your kitchen and especially your red transferware! In fact, I have long been smitten with it, and the way you have blended other items in red and white always makes me love it. A few weeks ago, at a garage sale I found a boxed set of brown transferware that is a twin to some of yours and bought it on the spot! $20.00 for a set of 16, in pristine condition. I am now looking for some Woodland Spode pieces to blend it with . I like your ideas and it’s said, Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
Have a blessed day.
Susan
Wow! A box of transferware for $20! I’d have grabbed them too!
As Vicky said, there definitely is an art to displaying your dishes in the cabinets and you have surely mastered that! I love the bread box and the scale!
Sometimes I move this or that around. But not the dishes. They’re too heavy.
Love your open shelves. So pretty with all your white and red.
I have a lot of color in there. But I’m enjoying more neutrals like you use elsewhere.
I love the way you have displayed your red and white dishes in your cabinets. So attractive. There’s definitely an art to it.
I say just arrange things that suit you the way you in want it. If you’re happy with it, then that’s all you need.
