Lakeside Charmer

Betsy Glass and her husband bought this lakeside charmer in 2012. Already Betsy could picture it becoming her dream home.

It was a model home before, so the walls were bare and plain, and the front yard was just dirt.

Betsy, a landscaper and interior designer by trade, looked forward to the opportunity to make her own cottage feel like home.

Working her way from the outside in, she made the cottage into a unique and refreshing cottage retreat they call the “Sleep Inn.”

The home sits in a forested lakeside area in Michigan.

These letters are made from pieces of vintage tin whipped cream cans, adding color and a fun, retro vibe.

The bench in the entryway is made of reclaimed barn wood.

A beige sisal rug lays just inside the door.

The color scheme, with warm tans and light blue, echoes the natural surroundings and keeps the room light.

A local vendor created the coffee table using vintage windows for the sides and reclaimed barn wood for the top.

Shop Tan Sectional:

While the kitchen feels somewhat industrial, the vintage-style white pitcher and wooden cabinets continue the earthy feel.

The large metallic letters that spell “Food” add a playful touch.

The white porcelain fixture is a vintage gas station light Betsy bought on eBay.

Shop Galvanized Flower Bucket:

Betsy converted a buffet cabinet into a wine storage cabinet.

She painted the drawers with chalk paint so she could write the names of the various wines they have on hand.

The wine glass with corks along with a coral lamp add a fun and cozy touch.

Shop Nautical Lamp:

Betsy used a pallet and stenciled “Vintage Chanel Baby” on it to use as whimsical wall decor.

The focal point of the master bedroom is the reclaimed barn door headboard. There are functioning barn lights on either side.

Betsy made the side tables herself. She cut a wooden sawhorse in two and topped each half with reclaimed wood.

Shop Large Round Wicker Basket:

The guest room packs a punch of energy thanks to citrus accents.

More weathered wall signs give the room the vintage accents found throughout the house.

The enclosed patio is the best of both inside and out.

Betsy made the table herself, painted it with milk paint, and distressed it for a weathered feel.

The fire pit in the backyard is lined with rocks from the beach.

It provides a cozy place to sit with a glass of wine to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family.

Towels hang from a homemade wood hanger with pieces of jute to hang them from. The wood hanger is made from varying sizes of scrap wood.
