My son-in-law installed my window air conditioner yesterday evening and it works great.

My daughter brought supper over (Chinese take out) so it was a family affair.

Andrew of course brought his tool box and helped his dad. He is very serious when it comes to helping and using his “tools.”

In fact I found several of them under my bed this morning when I was on the floor doing my yoga stretching.

I just received an email from a reader who had the exact same thing happen to her when she tried to use her $25 off at Walmart.com. This makes my blood boil now. I’m not just mildly irritated. I’m just plain mad.

I emailed her back and asked if I could use a portion of her email here. I’m waiting on her response. There will be another post on this if she allows me to use her words.

When it is an isolated incidence it is one thing. But this seems to be more than that. This is false advertising and malicious. I will not rest now until I get their full attention.

If you know anyone else this has happened to, please let me know in the comments or email me.

I put my posts on Facebook, Google+ and Pinterest each day. So these complaints will be on social media as well.

I am quite glad the air conditioner is there, in spite of the bad Walmart.com experience. I rest easier knowing that the next time the air conditioning unit here goes out, I will have a room to retreat to.

And it will continue to go out, because the units are very dated and not sufficient to cool these apartments.

I am getting ready to go to the acupuncturist. I haven’t been in over a month.

Day before yesterday, when I lifted the air conditioner in the box up about a foot to rest it on a stool, I managed to irritate both my back and my ankle.

My ankle has thankfully been doing very well over the past 6-8 months. So I sure don’t want to mess up that progress.

Book

I am currently reading “The Kept Woman” by Karin Slaughter. Here is an Amazon blurb about it…

With the discovery of a murder at an abandoned construction site, Will Trent and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are brought in on a case that becomes much more dangerous when the dead man is identified as an ex-cop.

Studying the body, Sara Linton—the GBI’s newest medical examiner and Will’s lover—realizes that the extensive blood loss didn’t belong to the corpse.

Bloody footprints leading away from the scene indicate there is another victim—a woman—who has vanished…and who will die soon if she isn’t found.

Will is already compromised, because the site belongs to the city’s most popular citizen: a wealthy, powerful, and politically connected athlete—a man who’s already gotten away with rape, despite Will’s exhaustive efforts to put him away.

But when evidence links Will’s troubled past to the case, the consequences will tear through his life, wreaking havoc for Will and everyone around him, including his colleagues, family, friends—and even the suspects he pursues.

Have you read any Karin Slaughter books before? I don’t think I have.

  1. I am new to your blog but I am enjoying it very much here in hot Tennessee. We have had a very hot summer.I like you am dealing with back and spine issues .It is very hard to not do things we wish to do even just picking up one end of something can cause you much annoyance and new pain or injury .I love everything you write .Sorry about Walmart and their mess they have created for you with the credit card .Hoping resolution for you very soon . Keep your chin up and march on .
I love your bright colors and decoration in your apartment it is a cozy little house .Hugs to you and your sweet companion .Enjoy your book and new air conditioner .

  2. I am happy that you got a back-up AC unit. I know it is hotter than all get-out there in the summer and can’t imagine you not having AC. How fun to have a helper-even if he is a little lax in the “pick up the tools” department.
That is miserable about the problem with Walmart. I don’t like Walmart to begin with most of the time.
I have not read anything by that author but will look for her now. xo Diana

  3. Walmart is notorious for unethical practice Brenda. Everything from their foreign labour abuse to not caring for animal welfare when their products have come from animals who were not well treated. Truly then, their credit card scam is only another indicator of a corporation that lacks integrity and has become souless. That said, I’m not sure the majority of corporations are much different.

It doesn’t hurt to fight back and I often do myself. Sometimes I win and sometimes I lose but if I win I think it has more to do with them wanting to just get rid of me rather than any ethic development of their part.

  4. Hi Brenda. I am from Manitoba, Canada. I just signed up for the Walmart credit card too. Once the application went through on the till, I received a receipt saying the credit card was confirmed and the card would come in the mail. The fellow who signed me up said the $25 credit could be used before or up to when I received the card. I had already done my purchase for that day and as you said, the set up for credit card was done after the purchase was complete. When I got home, I took a good look at that receipt and it was only good for that day. Yup, I think a whole lot of people got scammed with this approach. Enjoy reading your blog everyday. Sorry Abi is gone. Our pets are family for sure.

  5. I “hate” Wal-Mart. I call it the “evil necessity” store, as we don’t have any other stores here to buy all the staples. I don’t buy many groceries there – only if I’m there for the staples. We do have a big Meijer grocery store where I could get the staples, but they are so much more expensive. We don’t have a Target in our town anymore.

We got a new AC today, too only it was a central AC unit that powers the whole house. Our old was still working at 30 years old, but it was just a matter of time before it went out. So we bit the bullet and had it done before we lost our AC in extremely hot weather!

    1. These apartments were built in the sixties. I have no idea how old these units are. But they’re very old.

  6. I get so irritated with these offers companies think they can change their rules on at any time. So annoying it’s becoming so common place to not care about the consumer or the public. I rip up anything and every time I shop which is like twice a year, at Kohl’s and they ask me if I would like to save $$$ on my purchase that day if I opened a charge card cause I would get all these offers sent me, I politely say I know you have a job to do but I don’t want your freaking card for twice a year when I stock up on some clothes. I don’t trust any of them because everyone seems to have a story to tell you how they were treated. No thanks, my food dollars go to Wegmans, Aldi’s and Trader Joe’s here in NY. I trust them all. And I must say that Andrew is going to grow up to be a self made handyman learning what he is doing beside his daddy. Young people lack a lot of home skills because no one teaches life lessons on how to survive without paying someone to tack a nail in the wall for them. Good job your daughter and Sil are doing to encourage him.

    1. Andrew kept coming into the living room where his mother and I were sitting and saying: “Mom, you can’t come into the bedroom. It’s too dangerous because there are sharp tools in there.”

  7. Brenda, just a thought…you might consider contacting the Oklahoma State Attorney General, file a claim and encourage others who’ve been “scammed” with the $25 WM offer.

  8. Glad you got your a/c in and got to spend time with family too. You are lucky to have good helpers.
Good luck in your Walmart issue!

    1. I am so relieved to know it’s there and I will have a place I can go while I wait around to get the old unit outside fixed. Or as fixed as the maintenance man can get it. He told me with the unit being so much smaller than what it should be, there’s just not much he can do.

    1. Big box stores, government, insurance companies. All hard to deal with. We little people don’t get much traction with their tactics.

  9. I urge you to check with your state to see if there is a complaint process you can pursue, and file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. This will get your situation the attention it deserves because businesses take complaints made to the BBB seriously. I made a complaint once, a few years ago, against a big box company where I live and the situation was resolved rapidly to my satisfaction. I don’t ordinarily do this but I was steaming mad about what happened. I’m glad you have your new AC unit installed. It is upsetting to me that you have to pay for more electricity now and your bill is probably higher than it should be already because your inefficient ancient unit at the apartment is sucking energy left and right and continually running to try and deal with the heat. There is probably not much insulation in the walls either, I would bet. I hate to suggest it because it is such a hassle and with your physical restrictions even moreso, but maybe the time has come for you to consider moving to a better quality apartment complex.

    1. There is NO insulation! I don’t think I could handle another move with my ankle. Not right now. And for that matter, I can’t afford anywhere else. I pay almost $700 for a one bedroom and that’s considered cheap here. And I pay all my utilities, etc.

      1. They “say” they are about to put insulation in the attic space. Our attic stretches across all four apartments. I know of a woman who had to be moved to another unit due to someone smoking on one side of her and the smoke coming directly to her and making her feel sick.

  10. If Walmart doesn’t give you the credit you are entitled to, you may wish to file a claim with your state’s Department of Consumer Affairs. (Or whatever it is called in your state.) They are there to protect you and prevent consumer fraud. If Walmart did this to you AND another reader, just think how many people across the nation this has happened to! Before you do that, however, I would suggest that you document everything in writing, either by old-fashioned letter or email to Walmart’s customer service dept., explaining what happened, their inadequate response, and how you want it resolved. Good Luck!

  11. So happy you got the ac installed. It is comforting to know you have a cool place to sleep when it’s super hot. Oh WalMart, they are making me angry for you and others. I hate it when they ‘cheat’, hoping it gets resolved in your favor. I have read Karin Slaughter books and I really like her stories and characters. Hugs!

    1. I think I’ll look for more of her books. I like the way she writes. Yeah, I will just keep giving Walmart bad publicity here and on social media. Social media is usually a real sticking point for companies. A burr in their backside.

  12. I am weaning myself from shopping at Walmart. I went there for groceries.
I will leave my medical prescriptions there because I love one pharmacist and I trust him.
he literally saved my life once.
otherwise I can do without their tactics. my neighbor next door is in medical school and they have messed her around with her hours. they treat their employees very poorly. just under the radar.
and you’re right. Old Sam would be mortified by the way his money grubbing selfish children or grandchildren are running things. you go girl.
oh! and btw… I thought I shopped there because it was cheap. I have been AMAZED at Trader Joe’s prices. I thought they were supposed to be HIGH! they’re not! and Aldi’s is in town now so I’m going there. (have to go into OKC for Trader Joes). good luck to you!

    1. Trader Joe’s is quite reasonable. And I love their store. My insurance dictates that I get my prescriptions from Walgreens.

  13. Brenda, good for you for posting complaints of consumer fraud! You have a powerful tool here! I too become infuriated when stuff like this happens. I feel powerless.
I am sorry you hurt yourself. I know not to life something, but I think “oh, just this once” :/. Keep doing those yoga stretches. They are so beneficial.
I think I’ll try The Kept Woman – I am currently binging on Elizabeth Strout (Olive Kitteridge). Sending healing thoughts, Peggy

    1. I just got back from acupuncture. For what he charges ($65) he is cheap. He worked on me for two solid hours. I was so relaxed afterward. That was good, because Walmart has me really pissed.

  14. Brenda,

I can see why you are irritated about Walmart. I am having a similar issue with Williams Sonoma and I am incredibly frustrated and disappointed by their horrible customer service.

Thank goodness you have your air conditioner! At least you will stay cool should the other go out.

Good luck at the acupuncturist and walmart.

    1. I have only purchased the Breville Smart oven from Williams and Sonoma, so don’t know much about them. I normally can’t afford their prices, but the Breville was the same price it was everywhere else.
