This home tour is of Annie Sloan’s English townhouse in Oxford, England.
Annie Sloan, the inventor of chalk paint, captured the hearts of DIYers on both sides of the pond with her low-fuss varnishes and furniture restoration.
Annie and her husband David Manuel have three sons: Henry, Felix and Hugo.
Annie’s go-to neutral, French Linen, covers the living room walls. “I knew I could put a lot of things on it, and it would take really well,” she says.
“It’s something that just grew organically,” Annie says of the look. “I’ve always mixed everything.”
A Corner Nook:
In this corner nook of the sitting room, her 19th-century horsehair-stuffed chairs get daily use.
“The springs are uneven and they should be upholstered, but I love them as they are,” Annie says.
The curtains are made from Annie’s “Tacit” fabric in Graphite, while the 18th-century screen was a country house auction find.
Dining Room: Annie Sloan’s English Townhouse
In the formal eating space, an assortment of fabrics from Annie’s Linen Unions collection covers 19th-century French chairs.
Color abounds. It’s obvious Annie Sloan is not afraid to add and mix colors.
Annie created the striped tabletop. The candelabra is made from a repurposed chandelier.
The Kitchen:
Annie’s kitchen has a Lacanche range and a farmhouse sink. She wanted it to be a fun kitchen, so she painted a mural on the backsplash. And it is fun in its various bright colors.
French Linen also makes an appearance on Annie’s kitchen cabinetry.
Garden Room:
The sunny extension off of the kitchen became Annie’s makeshift studio during the pandemic. It is here that she sketches. House plants, mostly ferns, surround her.
“I love combinations of colors,” she says. “It’s a way of having something joyful and interesting.”
Just off the garden room is a charming seating area. It has a rather moody feel to it with the dark painted walls.
The drawing at the left was created by Annie’s son and the business’s Creative Director, Felix.
What could have been a dark passageway to the garden room was given the full Annie Sloan treatment with colorful hues.
It beckons you to go up the steps to see what’s around the corner.
“It sort of makes the house!” she says.
Main Bedroom: Annie Sloan’s English Townhouse
The main bedroom provides a soothing feeling with deep colors and DIY projects.
David constructed the headboard from salvaged panels purchased at reclamation yards.
The coverlet is made from Annie’s Linen Union fabric in Emile + Graphite.
Annie painted the mural on the bath panel on a whim. Vintage crewelwork stands in for the shower curtain.

Very vibrant. As a maximalist myself ,I believe more is more and less is bore.I appreciate the informality in style that exudes warmth with naturalness.
I love every nook and corner. Being a maximalist ,I feel more is more and less is bore. Very creative indeed!
Wow! I love the garden room! What a beautiful place for her to relax and let her creative juices flow during the pandemic.
What a beautiful, creative home! Certainly looks very British.
Interesting to see where the chalk paint legend lives! Not exactly my taste, but I can appreciate her artistic talents, and how she has truly made the home uniquely hers.
Like Wendy, above, says, I couldn’t live in Annie’s house, either, although it is very interesting and unique. It is visually just too busy for my eye. I need a soothing pallet and less “clutter”. It was interesting to see her style and use of color, though. A fun little tour. Thanks for sharing it, Brenda.
She is so true to her creative soul. Her house really reflects her personality and creative living. Very pretty and unique. Thanks for sharing her home with us Brenda. xoxo
I just bought some ‘chalk’ paint to redo 2 Ikea chairs but I have to say I would not like to live in Annie’s house. It is just too much stuff, too much for my eye to take in. I would not find it restful at all.
What a gorgeous place! So many beautiful, unique things.
Brenda, this is a beautiful post to enjoy on a Friday morning! So much color and happiness in Annie’s house. I remember WAY BACK WHEN I think it was 2011 that Annie Sloan was just introduced to America, although she had a line of paints in the UK for years. In fact, an artist friend of mine used her paint a lot and she let me share a few of her creations. Here is a post I did on one. https://pineconesandacorns.com/2011/10/another-beautiful-before-and-after/
Have a wonderful weekend, enjoy your sweet pets.
