You’re probably wondering what “buttons and little girls and no AC” have to do with one another. Well, there is no relation. It’s just what’s going on around here.

In Buttons & Little Girls & No AC, this is kind of irrelevant, but it is my geranium blooming.

This is the red geranium that has slightly different flowers than my white one has. I think the blooms on this geranium resemble crepe paper. And there are various gradations of shades of red in the flowers.

I’m sure glad I ordered that portable air conditioner last week. Because my AC went out over the weekend.

This is the portable air conditioner I ordered last week. I’m quite pleased with my purchase too.

The Portable AC I Ordered From Amazon:

The portable AC I ordered from Amazon last week

It was heavy and still in the box, so I texted Greg and he came yesterday to help me with it. He brought his two year old daughter, Everly.

Everly & The Buttons:

I put Everly at a table in the same room where her daddy was working on getting the portable AC ready. And I put all my jars of buttons in front of her.

Boy, did she have fun. I put a large glass jar on the table and she would take buttons out of one Mason jar and put them in the large glass jar. This kept her occupied the entire time, which was probably 45 minutes.

I’m so glad I have this portable AC unit. If I move I can take it with me. It’s always good to have ways to both heat and cool your home until you can get your unit fixed. I have my Duraflame stove that I can use if the heat goes out.

At any rate, I consider it a good investment. I like to be prepared. And it’s on rollers so you can move it about.

Everly’s grandmothers have passed, so I told her if she wanted I could be her grandma. So she began calling me grandma.

She told me her grandma died and it made her mommy so sad, and that her mommy cried. I told her that it makes people sad, but it would get better.

Playing buttons with her was fun. I had not brought out the buttons since Marley, now 15, was a toddler. What a wonderful memory that is, too. I have the photo somewhere online of her sitting at my table with the big button jar.

Marley:

I couldn’t find the photo of Marley and the button jar, but I did find this one of Marley around that age at the pumpkin patch.

Marley when she was a toddler at the pumpkin patch

My sweet girl, Marley. Bright-eyed and full curiosity and adventure.

Greg said: “I had no idea she would like buttons.” I said: “Little girls like buttons.”

They can have an iPad and every fancy toy in the world. But give a little girl a jar of buttons and she will be occupied for hours.

I had all the buttons sorted by color in different mason jars. Now they’re all mixed up and combined in one jar after she played with them. But that’s fine. They’ll be there when she visits.

When Greg and Everly were ready to go home (I took him away from mowing his yard) Everly reached up and took my hand. Then at the door she hugged me and blew me a kiss.

I told her she was welcome to come play with the buttons any time she wanted. I’m happy to be that child’s grandma.

Playing With Little Girls:

It’s always easier for me to play with a little girl. Little boys want to throw balls and roll around on the floor and be rough. I know how to play with little girls.

So I suppose now I have two granddaughters and two grandsons.

Greg’s parents were older when they had him. He was one of those babies that came along many years after his siblings were born. His brother died this year at age 70. Greg is 48.

I feel like Greg’s mother after having him as my physical therapist for two years. I’ve told him that many times.

When Kendra was working in my yard recently, he was walking down the sidewalk for my Saturday physical therapy. As he walked by, I told Kendra who he was.

She looked up and said: “Well, hello brother.” He said: “Hello sister.”

So back to the air conditioning. Someone came out yesterday but was unable to figure out quite what the problem is. I put a work order in for maintenance. They’re one man short, but hopefully he’ll get to me today or tomorrow.

If I stay in my bedroom across from the room that has the portable AC, I’m quite comfortable. I have the fan on my central air conditioning on.

The temperature in my apartment this morning is 76, so it’s still quite comfortable. However it will inch up as the day progresses.

Ivy’s Artistry:

I had foam brushes stored in the wooden box where I also stored the jars of buttons.

Ivy had a good time playing with the foam brushes last night. She took them out of the box during the night and displayed them on the floor.

In Buttons & Little Girls & No AC, Ivy took the foam brushes I had stored and arranged them across the floor

This is my bedroom. She dragged them from my office across the hall. I thought the arrangement of foam brushes was rather artistic in nature.

Of course, as Ivy’s mommy, I think she is brilliant.

Speaking of Ivy, she was very good with Everly. Everly would gently pet Ivy. I guess Greg told her I had a cat, because she brought her stuffed kitty with her. She said its name was Meow.

  1. What a wonderful, kind man Greg is. His daughter sounds precious. My boys loved to play with buttons too when they were little, so it’s not just little girls. My mom had several jars full of them. I would love to be a “surrogate grandma” to a little one, since I don’t have any grandchildren. (I hope one day that my son is in a long-term relationship or gets married and decides to have a child.) I love talking to and playing with my friend’s grandkids when I see them at their houses, but that’s not often.

My mom’s central AC “died” this year – it was the original of her townhouse, quite old. She actually loves the heat, but does like the AC when she’s sleeping, especially since her bedroom is on the 2nd floor. Her elderly dog also needs AC. So she had to spend $5k to get a new unit installed.

  2. Greg has been a godsend! And what a precious encounter! Buttons are interesting and fun! Good reminder – I think I’ll start collecting! Sweet little girl. Precious moments!

What a nice helper Greg is…and so nice you can play grandma with his little girl!! I hope this relationship endures a long time!! I think buying a portable AC was smart!! We had one for a place that was fairly ok temp-wise…as was close to inland sea waters…but we needed that AC to block noise as much as anything so used it that way during summers. Living across from a city center was very stupid plan believe me…people in such places think renting such for a few hours means they can make as much noise and they want to…and did so. The AC was somewhat noisy…but we were glad to have it for both reasons!!

  4. I saw a article in Martha Stewart’s Living magazine that showed several crafts featuring buttons cut from old shirts. Tea towels had top and bottom borders with rows of buttons, and throw pillows that used differently colored buttons sewn to simulate flowers with stems and leaves. Small boxes had buttons glued to its sides in decorative patterns. Someday I’ll use the buttons I inherited from my Grandmother to decorate my home.

  5. Playing with buttons is good for pre reading and math skills. Let her play with them until she tires of that or starts to sort them to color, shape or size. Later sort by number of eyes. Your geraniums are beautiful.

    1. If the buttons or any object children use for play can slip through an empty toilet paper roll then they are too small for those under five.

Sounds like a perfect afternoon. Buttons and a little girl. Still have my jar of buttons, but the grand girls are grown up and ages 31, 29, and 22. Think I’ll take a look, and see what I have, maybe can use some in a craft project.
Have a nice week, we’ve had more rain this last month than ever, but think July will be dryer, hope so anyway.

    Good Monday morning Brenda,
How wonderful to have Greg and Everly in your life! And now an additional son and granddaughter!
As for Ivy and her artistry! I love it.

What a sweet little girl Everly is! I am glad that she had such a fun time with your buttons. Greg sounds like such a nice person so you can have him as an extra son and Everly as a granddaughter. (smile)
You have had your share of troubles with that apartment even though it is a very nice apartment. Glad you had the portable AC as it surely would be miserable without it. I lived in Bartlesville, Oklahoma for awhile so I know how the weather is there.

  9. Even though it had its own issues, I donโ€™t remember you having all these problems when you were at your last apartment. Iโ€™m glad you had the foresight to buy your own portable AC unit. A lot of people in the same circumstances probably wouldnโ€™t have thought of it or couldnโ€™t afford it. I hope daily all these housing issues will end. I also hope a perfect forever home surfaces for you.

  10. Sounds like you have a new friend. Everly sounds like such a sweet little girl. And Marley is so cute in that picture. And of course, Ivy is artistic. She takes after her mother. The flowers you have been showing us lately look pretty healthy. So evidently some of yours have made it thru the heat and rain this summer. It’s not easy. Been a rough summer so far on flowers. Never thought about getting a “back up AC”. Not a bad idea.
