Case Histories On Amazon Prime Video
I’m currently watching Case Histories on Amazon Prime Video.
It’s no secret that I love detective crime series from countries other than the US. However I make an exception for Longmire, which was set in Wyoming.
I find these types of mystery and crime series in the US to be somewhat shallow and with too much violence depicted in the story line.
In other countries, detectives don’t always use a gun. Or carry it with them. Below are the countries where police don’t carry guns.
Countries Where The Police Don’t Carry Guns:
- Botswana
- Cook Islands
- Fiji
- Iceland
- Ireland
- Kiribati
- Malawi
- Marshall Islands
- Nauru
- Niue
- Norway
- Samoa
- Solomon Islands
- Tonga
- Tuvalu
- United Kingdom
- Vanuatu
Ireland is one of the European Union countries with the lowest crime rates. Only about 25% of the police there can use firearms.
Detectives and police in several special units can use guns in isolated situations. Generally, however, police often patrol the streets and make arrests without guns.
Case Histories
“Case Histories” is from Kate Atkinson’s well-loved novels of the same name. It follows investigator Jackson Brodie as he attempts to unravel case histories in modern-day Edinburgh.
Jackson Brodie (played by Jason Isaacs), a former soldier and policeman, becomes a private investigator in Cambridge, England.
In this series he comes to the rescue of the bereaved and those left wondering what happened to a loved one.
He also struggles with his own past. Particularly the wife who has left him and taken their young daughter, which has broken his heart.
Detective Brodie tries to present a tough guy image, but behind that is an empathetic person with a big heart. It is said that it’s this dichotomy that makes the stories he becomes involved with so compelling.
Case Histories was made into a BBC TV series, adapted from Kate Atkinson’s best-selling novels.
Atkinson writes this about her books: Jackson Brodie is a private investigator, originally from Yorkshire. A former soldier and policeman he now makes his money investigating infidelity and finding missing cats.
You can read more of Atkinson’s books about Detective Brodie here at her website.
Just wanted to say how much I enjoy your blog.
I am in British Columbia Canada and so you never might never know how much you mean to me. It’s interesting to read and your style of writing. Really enjoy it.
Thanks to you, I just finished watching Case Histories.
Not related to your post, but I clicked the link to go to your pinterest from the menu button on the right of my screen that says “More Links” and it takes to some other page for a Brenda (not you).
Thanks for the recommendations, will have to check this out! I love mysteries!
I know you enjoy reading mysteries, also. A series I’ve recently found and am enjoying, is by Louise Penny with Chief Inspecter Armand Gamache. It’s set in Canada in the Montreal area. Prime Video has a series based on the books (very loosely) Three Pines, but I was very disappointed in it. I found it a bit disjointed, and the characters lacked the depth in the novels (which can often be the case) tho I loved the actors. I also think detective series set in other countries are so much better than ours.
If you give the Louise Penny series a try, I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.
I’ll check it out. I actually watched Three Pines a month or so ago.
I love Jason Isaacs. I first noticed him in the Harry Potter movies. Then I started watching everything that he has ever acted in. Excellent actor.
I think that the Brits, generally speaking, do crime dramas better than we do. They focus more on character development and storyline.
I’ve only seen Jason Isaacs in one series. I forget what it was called. But it was about an Irish family with 3 sons. Isaacs played the bad seed, one was a politician, and the other one I think was a cop if I remember correctly. What else have you seen him in?
“Awake” – a police/fantasy drama, “The Patriot” – the movie with Mel Gibson, “Peter Pan” – the 2003 version – he played both Mr. Darling and Capt. Hook, “The State Within” – a miniseries, “Star Trek – Discovery”, “The Death of Stalin” – a dark comedy film, “Brotherhood” – a tv series. There are others that I know that I’m forgetting.
I enjoy watching some of the US mysteries on tv, such as Monk, Diagnosis Murder, and a few others like those. They are just one hour long tv shows. I also enjoy the Hallmark mystery movie series. I don’t like anything that is really scary. I will mute the sound, if a scene becomes a little too intense for me. It’s amazing how much less scary a movie is with no sound, lol.
You know from the music that something bad is about to happen.
BBC has produced some sterling special productions over the years. My favorite was the 1995 mini-series of “Pride and Prejudice.” There have been one or two other Jane Austen novels they’ve produced, too. Always excellent. Reality today is a brain crusher and downright depressing. I want my entertainment to always have a happy ending, especially love stories. I don’t care if real life isn’t like that – but it SHOULD be!
I guess I like crime/detective stories because of the writing I used to do. You’d think I’d want to go in the opposite direction, but I always want to try to solve a mystery.
I’m not a lover of crime shows but I do agree w UK shows. I do enjoy a classic who dun it mystery a la Sherlock Holmes, Alfred Hitchcock, Agatha Christie, Angela Lansbury… If you enjoy this type of mystery I highly recommend a PBS Masterpiece series called Magpie Murders about a book editor who is given an unfinished manuscript by her celebrated mystery writer and then he turns up dead. The editor then finds herself in the middle of the investigation trying to solve his murder and find the missing book chapter. The story is based on the bestseller book of same name and the book was also adapted for the TV series by the author. I enjoyed it so much! I believe there will be a season 2 – season 1 is 6 episodes.

I loved “Magpie Murders!” Excellent actors and great storyline.
I will check it out!
This looks like a very interesting police drama. I need to explore Amazon Prime.
There are a couple of USA police dramas that I’ve discontinued watching because they are just too much ick and such. Hope that makes sense.
Have a wonderful Monday, Brenda.
I like a good story line along with the drama and mystery and crime.
