Container Plants & Losing Money

Yesterday, Kendra brought over two hanging Boston fern plants she picked up at the grocery store while shopping. They’re on the front porch. We didn’t hang them up because we’re supposed to have bad weather and high winds.

She also went into the shed in the backyard, trying to settle it on the dirt with patio pavers. With the high winds lately, the shed blew off its moorings, and my Christmas ornaments were blown across the yard. I think I already told you about that happening.

Kendra said she had the shed held down better years ago, but Oklahoma can get really strong winds and blow even heavy things around. The kind of wind that someone once told me blew her pierced earrings right out of her ears.

In Container Plants & Losing Money, these are my container plants in the front yard.

While I watched her out there, I noticed something had come up in one of the few pots she didn’t haul to the front yard last week. I went out with my cane to see what it was. And it wasn’t just a weed.

It was the Lily of the Valley plant I ordered from Great Garden Plants last year. Since I didn’t have any tools in the back yard, I scooped out the dirt with my hands and carried it to the front. Then, I planted it in one of the pots Kendra arranged last week in one of the two garden beds.

I added more soil to the large blue pot and settled the Lily of the Valley plant into it.

Lily Of The Valley Plant:

Lily of the Valley is a perennial with an underground fibrous root system. It is known for its fragrant, white, bell-shaped flowers and lush green foliage. It didn’t bloom last year.

Lily of the Valley will thrive in shady areas. The blooms, which are small and delicate, look like this image I found online.

My Japanese maple has sprouted tiny red buds. The leaves are so ornate that it seems nearly impossible that it’s authentic.

The above galvanized containers contain Lamb’s Ear, chocolate mint, Veronica, golden pennies, and sedum. The sedum grows around the tree every year. You can scoop out a bit of sedum, and it will grow elsewhere if you want it scattered around your yard.

Losing Money:

Maria just cleaned this house. I took it apart, looking for the $100 bill I had put away for her, so I had to write her a check. That’s the end of my going to the bank to get cash for her. From now on, I will pay her via Zelle, which Maria said she accepts. I pay Kendra rent via Venmo.

I’m at a point in my life where I can’t keep track of things. I saw that $100 bill just yesterday, and now it’s nowhere to be found. Sometimes, I find something I’m looking for in the trash, but not this time.

It pains me to think about losing $100, but it is what it is. I can’t imagine it back into existence.

My front porch with house plants, patio furniture, and Boston ferns.

When I Last Saw The Money:

When I last saw the money yesterday, I had just spent hours cleaning the two litter boxes. That meant taking the litter out, cleaning the boxes with soap and water, and refilling them with about 15 pounds of fresh litter each.

I put the old litter into thick trash bags and dragged each one outside to the trash just off the porch. Thank goodness I could lean over the side and didn’t have to haul things down the porch steps. I was exhausted, and my knee, ankle, and hands throbbed with pain, so there’s no telling what I did.

There may come a day when I run across that $100 bill in the bank envelope. Or maybe the ghost with the strong perfume, the presence I smell as I sit in this chair, was behind it. Perhaps she’s toying with me.

It hurts when you lose that much money. I literally became sick to my stomach over it.

But I went through everything. I keep warranties for appliances in that drawer. And I even took out the drawer itself, and checked in the back of the piece of furniture. Over and over again, I sifted through every page, and I didn’t find it.

Such is life. You win some; you lose some. And today I lost. I keep telling myself it isn’t the end of the world.

  1. Although my friends and I are Protestants, but we often โ€œborrowโ€ this plea to the Catholic St. Anthony, the patron saint of lost items: โ€œTony, Tony, look around. Iโ€™ve lost something and it must be found.โ€ Seriously, we are amazed at how often and how quickly we find the lost item, sometimes in a spot where we have previously looked.

  2. I’m wondering if maybe it is in the pocket of what you were wearing. or in the sofa cushion if you sat and rested. My mother used to misplace stuff all the time and get so mad at herself. Her “safe place to put it” would turn out to be someplace none of us would think to look. Some times it would turn up. Other times, she would let herself forget about it so it didn’t cause her grief.

  3. Ask the kitties,bet it’s under something,like a rug,chair,etc.

Ahem, years ago I lost that much…my birthday gift from a friend…I put it in a book as a bookmark as I did not know what I wanted at the time…heh, ALWAYS shake out every book before giving it away…you never know….the other part of this story is years later when I did come cross the money, we needed it BADLY at that time…

  5. I am always afraid of putting money in a plain envelope and having it disappear into the background. I always take a marker and make a couple of swipes on both sides so it stands out. I hope you find your money, Brenda. It is so frustrating. Good luck.

  6. I feel for you Brenda. Over the weekend I took out $150.00, preparing for Easter gifts for my 2 kids and girlfriend of my son. Monday night I went to pull it out of my wallet and only $100.00 was there. No idea what happened to the other $50.00, I looked everywhere and my husband said, “What can you do, you can’t drive yourself crazy looking for $50”. It’s the not knowing where it went that’s driving me nuts.

  7. Maybe one of your kitties knocked it around. Hope you find it.

  10. Brenda, I find that when I’ve misplaced something and I start looking for it and then panicking I’ll never find it but if I just decide eventually it’ll show up when I least expect it it actually does at least most if the time. I hope that 100$ shows up for you very soon!

    1. I’ve had the same experience. When I give up looking for or thinking about it, it just shows up. It’s like my mind refuses to see what happened until I let it rest. Hopefully you will unexpectedly find the money when you least expect it.

  11. DID you know ALL PARTS of the Lily of the Valley are poisonous ? Neighbor gave me one last year, but after I found out about it being poisonous I dug it up and threw it away ( safe from animals !

  12. Oh Brenda, Iโ€™m so sorry! That would pain me too, to lose that much money! Not to mention it would drive me crazy, thinking I was losing my mind. Iโ€™m really, really sorry!! I pray you find it!

  13. Lily of the Valley happens to be one of my favorite plants. Another delicate plant I love, Snowdrops, also has little white flowers, but with spots of bright green.

  14. Ok, this may sound crazy but just in case you have a ghost and she’s messing with you, ask her nicely if she would return the money. It worked for a friend of mine who’s house is haunted and her car keys went missing and she always puts them in the same place. The next day they were back in the proper spot.

  15. That is mighty wind. I got cash from the ATM one time and left it there. That is a sickening feeling. The stray cat is watching you carefully. I wondered why it was staying outside. Yesterday, I had to find a document. That meant looking in my files. After I found it I decided to sort through what I do not need now. This year I have been late filing my income tax. Now the weather has been rowdy this week so I have postponed my appointment twice. The new one is on Friday so this time it will be necessary to go rain or storm.
