A box of these Corelle dishes from were setting on my porch this morning. They are the Faenza Dinnerware set for 4 from Amazon.

I needed more dishes like a hole in the head. But these aren’t to look pretty. They’re to be lightweight and easier on my hands.

Some of you have been mentioning them to me for several years because of the arthritis in my hands.

The dishes I have been using are heavier. It hurts to lift them, to wash them, to put them up.

When we’re young we think our hands and our fingers will work forever. But that’s not always how it works.

I look at my hands as I attempt to straighten my fingers and they kind of resemble claws these days.

We do and we do and we do. Something I’ve been cautioning Kendra about, because she’s having to wear a wrist brace. She’s working on a new house flip.

I’ve told her that using her body as she does probably won’t work out well for her. Not if looking at how her mother has fared is any example.

Age is like a stain. Once poured, it just keeps spreading. And like age, it just keeps on moving. One tick of the clock at a time.

We all feel it. Get it. Become familiar with it. Mourn it.

But then, as they say, it’s better than the alternative, isn’t it? I always tell myself to look around me at those with far worse problems. Because there is always someone who is faring worse.

As I feel the tingles in my hands like random nerve endings that have been sparked, I tell myself that. I reach out to lift a plate and pain sings down the neural pathways and the joints protest.

And I tell myself that.

So I should have ordered these dishes a long time ago. I knew just which ones I wanted too whenever I got around to ordering them.

When I think of Corelle dishes, for some reason I think of Tupperware. Something from another time. From before Kendra was born in 1974, which makes her turning 50 her next birthday in November.

Corelle, a brand of dishware, introduced to us in 1970, is a tempered glass product called Vitrelle. It consists of two types of glass laminated into three layers.

When my girls were young I used these dishes because I thought they wouldn’t break. Because Corelle has always been known for its strength and durability.

Of course anything made of glass can break under certain circumstances.

While I’m on the topic of things from the kitchen, I wanted to mention these dish brushes. I ordered them a few months ago.

I’ve never used dish brushes to clean dishes before. But the bristles sure get into corners and clean well and with less effort.

They’re good for cleaning the sink after the dishes are clean too.

I ordered Kendra a two-pack of these kitchen brushes as well.

  1. Nice dishes. I do enjoy white serving pieces. the food looks better! Not buying anything though. I’m too old. We have too much as it is. Still trying to get rid of most everything.
The only things we buy are food!! Which is ridiculously expensive.
    Enjoy your new dishes Brenda!
    P. S. Your daughter & partner did a great rehab on the hoarder house.
The spaces are so nice. Very easy to keep clean.
Hopefully soon, you will be able to find a little house like that. Much good luck with it.

Love these Corelli dishes Brenda! I hope they help with your pain.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  3. Hi Brenda! I enjoy your blog. I took love my Corelle dishes. Wanted to share baking dishes I found. Pyrex and other are so heavy. These are a great alternative….Rubbermaid DuraLite Glass Bakeware, 4-Piece Set, Baking Dishes or Casserole Dishes, 2.5-Quart and 1.5-Quart (with Lids).
I watched sales and got a set of 2 with lids for I think $40. at Target.
    Take care~ Karen

  4. I love Corelle. I haven’t had any of it in years, but I do love the pattern you purchased. Our Pottery Barn dishes are heavy. I’ve actually been giving them away in small batches to my kids. There may be a matching Corelle set in my future. Thanks for the reminder!

  5. I absolutely love Corelle dishes. They stack well, they are ultra light, clean well, etc. I have Phalzgraf in my hutch. I have been wanting to declutter them for years. They are incredibly heavy. I did declutter from a set of 12 to 8, but I really need to get rid of them all. Maybe go to 6 or 4, until they are all gone. Ha! I guess I like that there is everything under the sun that you can get in the pattern from a small lamp to little heart bowls, to serving, to coffee servers. But here’s the kicker. Phalzgraf doesn’t fit in my dishwasher! I too have arthritis in my hands with several fingers being all knarly. I just need someone to come over and tell me I can get rid of them! Then haul the box to where-ever because that box will be heavy!

  6. I like Corelle dishes too! I love that theyโ€™re light weight. I have a few melamine serving trays too that are pretty and light weight too. I think youโ€™ll be happy you bought them.

I’m so glad you like your Corelle dishes! I’ve been using sets for 50+ years. Lighter….and they take up less space, which is always a factor when living in small quarters. Thanks for the dish brush link…I may try that!

    1. Bobbie Henderson says:

I use Corelle for both of those reasons. Too old for heavy chinaโ€ฆand only one double width dish cabinet in my kitchen. Love them.

  8. You’ll be very happy with your new dishes. That particular set is beautiful, Brenda.
In 1977 some friends gave us Corelle as a wedding gift and I loved everything about them. Used them exclusively and now I have a serving platter and one sandwich plate left. I fell in love with your red and white dishes, so a set came to live at my house. I desperately needed a change after my husband passed away.
    I hope you’re having a good day!

  9. I have several sets of Corelle dishes that I switch out for the seasons. Some in sets of 12, 4 and 1 set of 2. Iโ€™ve always loved these dishes with the big serving bowls and platters! I bought some fiesta bowl plates for salads and such. Iโ€™ve dropped them plenty of times on the floor while only one broke! Lol

    1. Only one broke of my Corelle dishes bc it hit the floor on the side of the plate and smashed! Not the fiesta bowl plates.
I hope everyone is having a great day!

      1. Faith Varrone says:

I dropped a bowl years a go. I bounced off the counter (2x), bounced onto the stove top, then onto the floor 3x and then shattered. It was amazing to watch. AND….Corelle replaced the bowl!

  10. Fiesta was my favorite to collect for years. Now I have very few pieces except the glassware. I also have white dishes. I never bought the white Fiesta I wish I had, though. I collected the small cream pitchers from Fiesta. They are on my bakerโ€™s rack.

  11. When my former husband and I were planning to purchase a blue-water boat to live on, I purchased a set of Corelle that could survive the movement of waves and wakes. After my divorce, I sold those plates because I didn’t want to be reminded of what could have been.

  12. Elizabeth says:

I bought some Corelle again a couple years ago for some of the same reasons…yes, they can break, but not nearly so easy or as quickly as other dishwear to my knowledge. I got the cereal bowls too…which we use more than the plates. I also got some small salad size plates from thrift shops…all in clear glass, and as we do not entertain anymore, I do not care what matches anymore. I have more plates I am going to give away too…it is taking up space. Also I got some nice plastic nesting bowls, with lids even, and the 2 larger ones I use most every day for something…today it was for making pancake batter for breakfast. I still have my heaver mixing/serving bowls, but rarely use them. Gotta work smarter not harder…day by day it makes more sense than it ever has.
Hope you feel better soon. We live in the south too, and whenever the weather changes, we are in pain…I wonder if some of yours is not also impacted by such!!

  13. I had to get rid of my Fiestaware for the exact same reason. My husband has neuropathy in his hands, and now has a lot of problems lifting heavy items. Fiestaware is very heavy. I found plain white Corelle, several assorted pieces, at a garage sale last summer for $15. I gave all the Fiestaware to my daughter. Aging is not for the faint hearted!

  14. I’ve had my Corelle since 2002 and it’s still as good as the day I bought it. As my fingers get more arthritic I find I drop things more easily so it’s Corelle or melamine for us now.

  15. I am 69. I have the hand and arm and claw issues too.
I know the Corelli will help you. One thing we do is use the plastic baskets from a restaurant supply like you get at a burger place. We line them with the disposable checked paper, or paper towels. These save on dishes for snacks and lunches. Even breakfast things like English muffin. Thatโ€™s sweet to get Kendra brushes.
