This new build saltbox farmhouse is home to Christopher Vazquez and Rick Davis. They decided to trade life in their urban townhouse on Capitol Hill for the Maryland countryside.
Old House Enthusiasts:
The two were old-house enthusiasts and wanted to swap their urban townhouse for a 100-year old fixer upper. But most houses they looked at were money pits.
Rick’s brother Wayne happened to be a builder. Together they came up with an old-fashioned saltbox on a 27 acre piece of land in Hollywood, Maryland.
They decided to keep the architecture simple.
Saltbox Style Architecture:
Saltbox-style architecture got its name from its resemblance to an old lidded salt box. (From the front, there are two stories; from the back there is one).
There are soapstone countertops with white cabinets and wooden millwork atop sage green walls in the kitchen.
The range was inspired by a 1900s-era stove. The modern fridge is concealed behind cabinetry.
The Living Room:
In the living room a reclaimed log cabin beam serves as a mantel. Rick keeps a steady display of flowers from the garden in the house.
The Dining Room:
In the dining room a metal chandelier with votives for tea candles provides an old-world ambience for entertaining.
The Entry:
In the entryway a rustic beam reclaimed from an old log cabin is now a shelf showcasing vintage vessels.
They added reclaimed flooring in random widths and laid with old nails.
An antique desk marked with 1870s election returns shows off a vintage typewriter, duck decoys, cigar boxes and apothecary jars.
The Master Bedroom:
In the master bedroom an antique spool bed is flanked by two antique side tables. A classic braided rug warms up the plank floors.
The Bathroom:
In the bathroom dramatic walls offset the softer floral colors. The antique lantern formerly hung in a church.
And here’s a photo of Christopher and Rick posing on their 27-acre farm.

This house makes me think of the homes my grandmothers lived in. It gives me a nostalgic, “want to return to my childhood” vibe.
What a beautiful home! Love the dog laying under the kitchen table!
I’d never guess that was a new build. Love the rustic beam in the entry way.
I love this one! To me it has so much character. Such well thought out uses of beautiful items. Every room is different, but the differences still ties them together. I love the colors! Muted, but striking at the same time. I think that I could look at this house a hundred times and still find something that I didn’t see the first 99 times.
Love all the rooms and the wall decor if awesome. Happy Friday.
Oh wow, what a wonderful, wonderful home. Every single room..to DIE for! Really love this one Brenda…
What a gorgeous home. They certainly made a wise choice to build. And they have done an incredible job decorating. The salt box houses so remind me of back East.
What a cool house! I love the front door. And they have some great furniture.
The house seems warm and inviting. Love all the wood elements in the home. So many things to look at . The floors are beautiful, as is the front door. Looks like a very comfortable home.
