The problem with my ankle yesterday, the nurses said, was that my body rejected some of the disposable stitches. And they’d worked their way to the surface.
This created a sharp pain right on top of my outer ankle bone. It’s still sore but much better than it was.
They cleaned up the stitches on top of my ankle and pulled a few out. I was beginning to think I’d lost my mind and it was all in my head.
Enzymes in the body are supposed to slowly break them down, and they will eventually dissolve and disappear on their own. But mine did not do that.
I read that since all sutures are technically “foreign substances”, the human body has a tendency to sometimes reject them.
My body rejected stitches when I had a cesarean section when Kasi was born. I kept telling the doctor that something was wrong.
It took a year for them actually to see that the stitches had in fact not dissolved. The stitches had come to the surface and were hurting me. Then they had to go in and surgically remove them.
Sometimes they just don’t listen.
Lunch With Kasi:
After the doctor’s appointment, Kasi and I picked up Chinese food and brought here it to my apartment to eat.
The rain has finally let up. My outdoor plants, which look a bit burned in some areas, were probably very grateful for those rain showers.
My allium plant is starting to bloom, as you can see above in the lower middle. It is probably doing better than most of the outdoor plants in this heat.
I’m just hoping that next year some of the perennials that I bought will come back after withering in the over 100-degree heat for weeks on end.
Physical Therapy:
The physical therapist will be here at 11 a.m. Then I have the afternoon free. I’ll probably watch another movie.
That’s what I did yesterday afternoon: I relaxed and watched another movie on Netflix.
Glad you were able to figure out where the pain is coming from. Slowly but surely, you’re getting there!
So glad you’ve solved the mystery of the pain! Be sure to let all of your medical providers know that your body cannot tolerate dissolvable sutures so your medical chart can be updated … including your dental providers. In the event you are unable to advise them prior to a procedure, they’ll have the info on file.
I’ve never heard of the stitches rejecting your body either Brenda. See, u learn something every day!
Hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend!
I never thought about dissolvable stitches being rejected by your body. I guess that makes sense though, since technically it is a foriegn object in your body. I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with that, Brenda. At least your movies and books are being a good distraction for you. I watched a good movie on Amazon Prime last night called The House of Gucci. If you haven’t seen it already, you might enjoy that one. Get lots of rest!
Wow! Never heard of that,I’ve always had staples, here’s to less pain and hopefully more mobility.
I thoroughly enjoyed Blackbird, although I could have used a few tissues, thanks for the recommendation! Got part way through Labor Day but kept getting interrupted,so enjoy being able to start it over, thanks,Prime👍
Keep resting and healing.
I’m glad to hear they found out the problem and removed the stitches. Praying you have a full recovery now.
Well that shows how far behind the times I am – never heard of self dissolving stitches. Geez. If a doctor ever essentially told me that “there’s nothing wrong” but I am experiencing pain and symptoms I wouldn’t kick him or her but I would find me a new doctor in a big hurry. How many stories have we probably all read about doctors who ignored a patient’s complaint about something only to discover later on that she (it’s usually a woman they didn’t listen to) turned out to have something seriously wrong, but only after days, weeks or even months of suffering. Fingers crossed that removal of the non-dissolving stitches will be the end of pain and any complications and that full recovery can be achieved!
So glad you got the issues with the stitches resolved, Brenda. I hope the healing progresses normally and rapidly now. It sounds like you are taking advantage of the need to rest and be patient by enjoying watching movies and reading. That will speed the healing, I think. Be extra good to yourself; you deserve it after going through so much pain. Make sure to eat well, too. That’s most important to the healing process. Thinking of you every day.
Same thing happened to me. Like 3 times.
Ankle vein popped. Blood everywhere.
Was stitched up at the hospital.
They never automatically dissolved. Caused lots of pain on my right foot. Even today after years, still tender.
Hope you’ll be much better now that the situation can be properly cared for. I know eventually you’ll be great Brendab,,,,,, feel wonderful again!!! ❤️
Enjoy 😉 your weekend.
Hope that doesn’t happen to me.
Maybe now, the healing process will go smoothly. Hopefully there will be “NO” more complications. I feel so bad that you have so much to put up with. Being in constant
pain, has to be horrible…
Sending you good vibes for the weekend. Well actually sending you good vibes always..
Hugs from Wisconsin, it’s 75 degrees here and a lovely day!
I am jealous of your weather!
I also had stitches that my body rejected. I began to feel bumps under my skin. Thinking that one particularly itchy bump might be a pimple, I squeezed it and a stitch popped out. It was still tied in a tiny knot. That caused me to believe that my surgeon didn’t actually use dissolvable stitches he claimed he did. I hope your healing progresses more quickly now that those offending stitches are removed.
It seems we come out of surgery and never have enough information at hand.
Challenge with your stitches has been resolved and you weren’t crazy. Often times the doctors and/or nurses won’t slow down long enough to listen to us. We know our bodies better than they ever will. Every case is different!
I’m sending good vibes for your therapy session this morning.
As I do most days I’ll be relaxing and enjoy whatever the day brings. I hope you do the same.
PT went fine. I still have a lot of trouble walking with the rollator. But he told me to take a step and then bring my other foot up to meet that one. Not to step all the way through. Puts too much pressure on something on the inside of my ankle.
I started to write this earlier. In 1966 I was in an auto accident. The car was driven by my friend as we were driving home from college. There were four of us in the car. Each time it rolled one of us was thrown out. I had to have one hundred forty two stitches in my face. The ER doctor used disposable stitches which did not dissolve. Later I had reconstructive nasal surgery. Most people cannot see the scar. The doctor was in Tyler, Texas.
Fifteen years later I had a fifth grade student who kept telling me he wanted me to meet his mother. When I saw her it was obvious she had the same surgeon. It is good to know you are healing.
My word, I can’t imagine that many stitches!
Certainly hope this removal of stitches will allow more healing now!! Hope the therapy session goes well…be careful to tell them when it hurts too much!!
I’m very cautious during PT, and I tell him when I want to stop doing something.
