I was not at all surprised that Adolescence won big at the Emmy Awards.

It was probably the most compelling and poignant story I’ve ever watched. Brief, alarming, and filmed in one continuous shot, this was a jewel of a creation.

After watching Owen Cooper's breakout performance, I know that Adolescence Was Bound To Win Emmy Awards. Here he is with a clinical psychologist.

The psychological drama won eight 2025 Emmys. They include Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and multiple acting awards.

Adolescence is a four-part British psychological TV crime drama series created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, and directed by Philip Barantini. It centers on a 13-year-old schoolboy, Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), who is arrested for the murder of a girl in his school.

The award for Writing For A Limited or Anthology Series went to Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham.

Actor Stephen Graham:

Stephen Graham was paramount to the success of this film, as the idea came to him after listening to a news story.

At the Emmys, he opened up about his racial background. He said he was โ€œjust a mixed-race kid from a block of flats in a place called Kirkby,โ€ a British town in Merseyside. Then he thanked everyone within his realm of success.

Stephen Graham won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited or Anthology Series.

โ€œJack, everyone, Phil, everyone. I want to bring it to my dad for taking me to the video shop when I was a kid and kick-starting my education in film โ€” Quarry Green video shop,โ€ he said.

The actor talked about the racial abuse he faced as a child and how it affected him. โ€œI was called horrible words that I donโ€™t even want to say, and little monkey boy.โ€

Graham mentioned in his acceptance speech, โ€œThis kind of thing normally doesnโ€™t happen to a kid like me.โ€

โ€œSo for me, to be here today, in front of my peers and to be acknowledged by you is the utmost humbling thing I could ever imagine in my life, and it shows you that any dream is possible.โ€ – Stephen Graham

A Historic Netflix Success:

I watched Adolescence when it came out in March 2025 and was so taken with this film that I wrote about it here.

It was to be a Netflix miracle. You wouldn’t have thought a film of such brevity could land such an alarming punch. Oh, but it did. And the numbers Netflix racked up proved it.

The show premiered on Netflix on March 13. It was a runaway hit, reaching 24.3 million views in its first four days of availability, making it the streamerโ€™s top show for the week of March 10-16, 2025.

Owen Cooper’s Breakout Performance:

Owen Cooper, who played Jamie Miller, gave a stellar performance.

Cooper said he wanted to be a footballer. Then he went to acting lessons, and the rest of the story, as they say, is history. He has a fantastic future ahead of him.

Owen Cooper made history as the youngest male to win the Best Supporting Actor Award.

The Adolescence Series:

The film is about a troubled teen arrested for a horrific crime. His family is stunned when 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl who attends his school.

The series opens with the police knocking down the door of the Miller home in Northern England.

The charges against their son forced them to confront every parent’s worst nightmare. It seemed unbelievable, a complete aberration. And it would change their lives forever.

โ€œJamie knows what heโ€™s done, heโ€™s terrified, and he hasnโ€™t computed how final it was,โ€ Thorne says. โ€œHeโ€™s looking for his dad to tell him, โ€˜Youโ€™re safe, and I love you.โ€™ And his dad can never give him that ever again.โ€

Stephen Graham’s Own Words:

The story of Adolescence unfolded in real time.

Adolescence Was Bound To Win Emmy Awards, with the wonderful cast, and Stephen's Graham's writing.

While Jamie’s story, specifically, isn’t based on a real person or event, the idea for the series stems from what co-creator Graham had heard about on the news.

โ€œOne of our aims was to ask, โ€˜What is happening to our young men these days, and what are the pressures they face from their peers, from the internet, and from social media?โ€™ โ€ Graham told Netflix. โ€œAnd the pressures that come from all of those things are as difficult for kids here as they are the world over.โ€

โ€œWe could have made a drama about gangs and knife crime, or about a kid whose mother is an alcoholic or whose father is a violent abuser,โ€ said Graham.

โ€œInstead, we wanted you to look at this family and think, โ€˜My God. This could be happening to us!โ€™ And whatโ€™s happening here is an ordinary familyโ€™s worst nightmare.โ€

The story is gripping and heartfelt. You will come away from watching this film with a sense of heartbreak. And if you are a parent, you will wonder if this could happen to you.

  1. I havenโ€™t seen this show, but from the sound of it, it deserved all the awards it received! I remember you writing about it before. Itโ€™s made an impression on you!

    1. It was devastating to watch, even though it wasn’t a real story. But filming the way they did was incredible!

They’re not going to fire all of you. They’d have no programming left.

    1. Totally agree Claudia. It seems atm in the US you are only allowed your right to free speech if it agrees with them.

      1. Agree with both of you. It’s getting pretty scary here. These are the moves of a dictator. Comes right out of their rule book.
