Kristin Hannah & Tom Clancy Books
I’ve begun reading fiction that I think more of you might tend to read. I know many of you don’t like the suspense novels I lean toward.
Kristin Hannah was an author I thought many of you might like.
I know Kristin Hannah writes the type of books many readers love because her net worth was listed as $12 Million as of 2022.
I chose “The Great Alone” as the first of her novels to read.
The book has 576 pages and the paperback is $8.18 on Amazon. A bargain for a book of that length.
I’m really enjoying it, whereas I didn’t think I’d like her books.
I guess I had a bias because I thought her books were “romance” novels. And I’ve never really liked that genre of books.
Leni Allbright:
The story is told from the viewpoint of 13 year old Leni, the daughter of Ernt and Cora Allbright.
It is 1974. And Ernt has just come back from Vietnam.
He is a changed man. Ernt has a terrible temper and can be violent with Cora. Nothing seems to work out for him once he comes home. He can’t keep a job.
Then he finds out that his buddy who died in Vietnam left him a house in Alaska.
Ernt moves his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.
Leni knows that no matter what her father does or how many times he beats her mother, she will never leave him. Because Cora keeps thinking “the old Ernt Allbright” will eventually reappear.
There is no electricity or indoor bathrooms at the cabin in Alaska. And no running water.
But Ernt seems happy and that’s all that counts. At least he is for a time.
I won’t tell you more. But there is much, much more to this great story.
I am watching Season 3 of Jack Ryan on Prime Video.
Clancy’s military thrillers were blockbuster hits on the best-seller list and at the box office. He died at age 66 in 2013.
You might remember Clancy’s debut book, “The Hunt for Red October.” He wrote it in 1984, and it was frequently cited as one of the greatest genre novels ever written.
From the New York Times: The enterprises made Mr. Clancy a millionaire many times over and a familiar figure on the pop-culture landscape, frequently seen in photographs wearing a baseball cap and aviator sunglasses and holding a cigarette.
Have any of you watched Jack Ryan?

I love Kristen Hannah’s writing! I’ve read many of her books including The Great Alone and my favorite, The Nightingale. We’ve watched the first two Jack Ryan’s and thought we would start watching the 3rd series last evening. I don’t know how it happened, but we ended up watching Jack Ryan, Shadow Recruit, thinking it was the 3rd series. It was excellent and kept us on the edge of our seats. We’ll try again tonight and hopefully we’ll get started on the 3rd series.
I moved from a 4500 sq ft house with my own library, downsizing to 1100 sq foot apartment, donating around 250 books in the process. I now belong to a fabulous library system and have access to Everything. I love audiobooks and save money and space. I also volunteer there, which is also fun. It has worked out very well.
Sounds like you’ve arranged things to your satisfaction. Good for you!
I checked out your cozy little book nook page. I love it! That book review sounds very interesting. Thanks for the recommendations!
You’re very welcome.
Haven’t watched Jack Ryan, but I’ve read The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah, for my book club last year and it was wonderful. I’ve put The Great Alone on my reading list.
I’m going to read her other books. All sound good to me.
I will put the Kristen Hannah book on my library reserve list and also The Nightengale that so many here mentioned.
And I enjoyed a little trip over to the Nook page – nice! And the header is so darn pretty, Brenda!
Thanks for all the wonderful and stimulating subjects and ideas that you research and share with us. I truly appreciated it.
And I enjoy doing it for you!
I have read several of Kristin Hannah’s books except The Great Alone, and enjoyed them all. The Nightingale, however, is the best of them all in my opinion. I will read a romance novel if it has a good plot to it. I love mysteries, and some thrillers, just not the graphic, gory violence, kind. Historical fiction always pulls me in. I also like reading Memoirs as I enjoy learning about other’s experiences. Like the Cozy Little Book Nook page and the book review has me wanting to read the book. Oh, so many books and not enough time to read them all! Anyone interested in used books, there is a site called SecondSale.com
that I just ordered some books and dvd movies from that were very inexpensive and no shipping costs. So far, I am pleased with them. Amazon used books are generally more expensive and have shipping fees.
Thanks for telling us about SecondSale.com!
She is a great author..I have read many of her books..glad you decided to check her out..you will enjoy her books so much💕
She really goes in depth with so much detail about where the book is set. In this case, it is Alaska.
My hubby served in the Navy during Nam. He LOVES Hunt for Red October and other films of that sort…as well as has read some of the books by that author…I have watched that movie with him several times…but if there is a great deal of violence, I go elsewhere in the apt to do something else. I cannot stomach too much of that. But for some reason he can…
Maybe he can stomach it because of his military service.
The Great Alone was my least favorite book of Kristen Hannah. The Nightingale is probably the best book I’ve read in the last ten years.
Well, then I have a lot of good reading ahead of me!
I just finished reading Salt to the Sea by Rita Sepetys. It’s a fictional account of the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff during WWII. It’s excellent. After finishing it, I’m a little surprised that our local library has it in its young adult collection, and that the author herself intends it for both teens and adults.
The author is Ruta Sepetys, not Rita. Didn’t catch autocorrect before I post my comment.
Autocorrect is a beast!
In the past I enjoyed books by Kristin Hannah but when The Great Alone was released I was adjusting to major changes in my life. That’s when I stopped reading. I’m going to order it from Amazon today as I’ve been taking some small steps to enjoy reading again.
Enjoyed my visit to the Cozy Little Book Nook and the review you posted. Another must read.
In the past I enjoyed reading some “deep” and very intriguing books however I’ve also enjoyed what I call “easy” reading books. Thrillers are not my style, but I don’t enjoy thriller movies either. 🙂
Glad you’re getting back to reading again. I read before bedtime.
I must admit I have never liked romance novels, I am more inclined to go for the psychological thrillers.
Well, I thought this book would be a romance novel, but it isn’t. It’s about hard times, domestic abuse, women helping women, etc. I loved it from page 1.
Love what you have done with the Book Nook. I will be visiting it a bunch. Have enjoyed previous books of Kristin Hannah, have not read this one and definitely will. Currently watching 1923, have always loved Helen Mirren and she does not disappoint in this role.
Helen Mirren is an excellent actress and quite beautiful.
One of my all time favorite books is Kristen Hannah’s book The Four Winds. Sort of The Grapes of Wrath from a female perspective.
I think that’s in my Amazon cart.
Yes…we just finished the Jack Ryan, the series. Excellent as were season 1 and 2. We did rewatch season 2 beforehand, just to refresh our memories. How quickly we can forget. I’ve never read the Tom Clancy series however, so I can’t compare.
Hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did! 😉
I probably should have re-watched Season 2. I’ve only watched 1 episode of Season 3, so I could still do that.
I am a big fan of Tom Clancy novels. It was seeing the movie “The Hunt for Red October” that made me go out and buy a paperback version of the novel because, as we know, movies don’t capture everything important that goes on in a novel. I was hooked. I read all of the books where Jack Ryan was a character after that and a few more books that didn’t involve Jack Ryan. Some of the books I bought and are in my “library” and others I took out from the library. Tom Clancy also wrote “Air Force One” which was made into the super hit movie in 1997 starring Harrison Ford as President James Marshall who is aboard Air Force One with his family when it is hijacked. It is a thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat for nearly the entire film after the first 10 minutes or so. I also wanted to comment on how much I like what you did with your bottle/jar collection and the fairy lights on your mantel. There just is nothing like a mantel to add an incredible amount of coziness and classic style at the same time to one’s abode.
I purchased about half a dozen of Kristin Hannah’s books. You can find some real deals if you look at See Other Formats And Editions, which, if you’re on the book page, is right above Audio that’s next to Hard Cover. I get hardback books that way often under $10. I have not yet read any Tom Clancy books. I really like the actor who portrays Jack Ryan.
I read this book and loved it! “The Nightingale” was another of hers that got me hooked on Hannah’s work. I’m a big fan of historical fiction. To those who enjoy Bible based stories, “The Red Tent” is another I loved, read many years ago.
PS. Enjoyed my first visit to Cozy Little Book Nook! Sounds intriguing!
Kristen Hannah has a large following at a senior quilting group I attended. Everyone passed around her books as they would finish them and the ladies raved about them. My daughter started reading them too and likes them as well. I haven’t as I am a slow reader.
I just now figured out I could add my graphic I put together on the Cozy Little Book Nook page. Only thing I haven’t figured out on there is how to center the title.
I just acquired Nightingale recently. Haven’t read it yet though.
Oh, I loved The Red Tent! May have to re-read it. Same with The Nightingale.
