R.I.P My Sweet Boy Charlie Ross

Yesterday afternoon I took Charlie to an emergency veterinarian and had him euthanized. He was doing poorly and could barely get around.

We’d been having a lot of sleepless nights where he couldn’t get his breath or stop coughing.

When it got to the point in time where I was having to give him more medication than was called for, I knew it was too much for him to keep going.

Charlie Ross Pruitt: September 18, 2006 – April 28, 2021

I loved him so very, very much. And I was with him petting him and telling him how much I loved him as he left this world behind.

I am heartbroken. He was almost 15 and I’ve spent every single day with him by my side. Slept with him every single night.

He has now crossed the Rainbow Bridge and is out of pain. I hope Abi was there waiting for him.

  1. So sad for your, good dogs go directly to a better place… I had my Lylly euthanized in the spring after she had been ill for months and just worn out at 16 plus years. You see her photo on her Facebook page Lylly Spry.

I think her spirit became a robin as the first one of spring flipped past my car as I cried in the parking lot of the local coffee shop..
    Felicitations… Prue

You gave him so much love and enjoyment. A very lucky dog indeed.

  9. I’m so sorry to hear of Charlie’s passing. How long ago did you lose Abi? We had to let our 8 y.o. Trooper go in April. He got sick so quick but actually he was diagnosed last year with early kidney failure. We spent thousands trying to save him. Its heartbreaking to let our fur babies go but we don’t want them to suffer either. So sorry Brenda

  10. I am so sorry! It’s amazing how much love we can get from them and for them. Sending prayers for you.

  14. I’m so very sorry. You gave Charlie a good life & took such loving care of him. I’m sure that is why he made it to almost 15 years, although it is never as long as we would like. I hope that Ivy gives you comfort during this difficult time. Many hearts feel your sorrow today.

  15. I am so very, very sorry. I know this is absolutely heartbreaking. Charlie was adorable, precious, and very loved. I wish there was something I could say that would help, but I know from experience there is not. Every one of us who “knew” Charlie loved him. He will be missed always. I’m so sorry.

  16. I have been reading your blog for a couple Ed of years now, and feel as if we are friends. I know how difficult it is to lose a beloved pet, a part of your family and your heart. I will pray for you.

  17. Oh Brenda I am so sorry for your loss. I’m right there with you. I just lost my sweet 15 yr old Harley and it is so hard. I feel for you. Just remember all the good times.

    1. This is sooooooooo sad!!! I have tears and a giant lump in my throat upon learning you had to say goodbye to him—just like when it was Abi’s time to go.

I’m remembering she went during the month of May…and now Charlie in June. Back-to-back months, though separated by years.

And she DEFINITELY was there to greet him and start playing with him *immediately *!!!

  18. Oh, I’m so sorry for your loss; he is such a cutie. Glad you had him in your life for 15 years but now sad he’s gone.
    Take care.
    Cindy

  20. Oh Brenda…I am so, so sorry. My heart goes out to you. The loss of a beloved fur baby is incredibly hard. I know how much you loved Charlie. And he knew it, too. He had such a wonderful, loving life with you. Sending you much love and a big hug.

  21. Oh, Brenda, we have all known and loved Charlie Ross for so long through your writings and pictures, and are heartbroken for you. Though he has left this life, he will never really leave you, nor will Abi Rose. Keep on calling to him. He is there somewhere beyond time and he and Abi still love you very much.

  22. I’m so sorry. It is such a hard thing to do. I had to have my boy Dickens put to sleep last week and I miss him so much. He was blind, had a heart condition and was 17, so I guess I was luck to have him so long, but he leaves such a hole in my life.

  23. Brenda, I am so sorry for your loss. Charlie was so loved by you & all of us knew him!!
    Be good to yourself. 🕊

  30. Oh Brenda, I’m so very sorry! I know your heart is breaking, and there’s nothing any of us can do. I know it was a hard decision to make, doing what you knew was best for your baby. He knew how much he was loved, and he loved you back, just as much. He’s at peace now, and enjoying playing with Abi. And you have all your friends here, who love and care very much for you. You’re in my prayers. Sending lots of hugs and love your way.

  31. He was a special special boy… And I know he loved you as much as you loved him.
    I am so very sorry.
    Bless…

  32. Oh Brenda, I am so very sorry about your sweet little Charlie Ross…. You gave he and Abi Rose wonderful lives and I am sure she is was there to meet him when he crossed over the Rainbow Bridge….no more pain or suffering…. I am so glad that Ivy is there to Love and comfort you.. will keep you in my prayers…

  33. My heart aches for you. Thanks for sharing sweet Charlie Ross with us through the years.
Losing a beloved pet is so very difficult 🦋

  34. Brenda, there’s nothing any of us can say that will ease your pain, but perhaps it might help knowing that he is now happy, out of pain, and can chew and eat and breathe like he should. I’m sure Abi is with him showing him her favorite places and trying to boss him around already. It’s those of us that are left behind then have the misery. We can be soothed knowing that they are comfortable, warm and safe. I’m sure that Ivy is confused and concerned about you. Kitties are wonderful healers, so let her do her job as she knows best. I’m so very sorry.

  35. I am so very sorry for your loss. It’s so very difficult to lose our pets. You gave him so much love and care until the very end. He is pair free now and with Abi.

  36. Oh Brenda … I’m so very sorry. Charlie was the sweetest little guy and you were the best Mom ever to him. It’s so difficult to lose a family member and my heart goes out to you. (((Hugs)))

  39. I am so very sorry for your loss….what a huge heart ache with all the other struggles you have going on right now. I’m thinking of you.

  40. Charlie was loved all the way to heaven. He is running with Abi and pain free we know. Take good care of yourself so they both can be at peace over the rainbow.

  41. Brenda,
I am so very sorry. Thinking of you and Ivy at this time. There are no words. I wish you peace and comfort at this time. Prayers and many hugs!!

    Sending hugs, ,Janie

  44. Hugs Brenda. So very sorry for your loss. You gave him such a wonderful life. Take one day at a time. There are many of us lifting you in prayer.

  45. My heart breaks for you. We love our pets and they are our fur family. No words I have will take away your pain. May you find comfort in the love and life he shared with you, Abi and Ivy.

  46. I’m so sorry-losing Charlie is like losing a child-if fact he was your little boy. Dogs are wonderful-they love you just because you are you.

  47. So very very sorry. You loved Charlie and gave him the greatest gift you could give him, to release him from his pain. He was very loved !

  48. I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. It was very brave of you to help end Charlie’s suffering – and to give him such a wonderful life for 15 years. Every present or former pet parent is with you in your sadness and shares their love and understanding.
    Pat

  49. Oh Brenda! My heart aches for you. It is sooo hard to let go of those little bodies that we love so very much. I’m glad you have Ivy. She can’t replace Charlie, but at least you’re not alone. YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS!

    Barb

  50. I am so so sorry Brenda..I know how hard that decision is to make..I am glad that you have Ivy there to give you some comfort..

  51. Oh dear Brenda. There is no pain like what you are experiencing now. Words barely comfort, but the only ones I offer now are encouragement to think of what you gave your little guy (and Abi), in terms of safety, comfort, and unconditional love. There is no better existence for any living creature.

  52. Brenda, I’m so sorry to read this. Sending you hugs and big dog smooches from my babies. One day at a time is all we can do. I remind myself that the only way to avoid this heartache is to not love….and that would be even more of a heartache.

  53. Oh Brenda, my heart hurts for you. Losing our beloved furry family members is so tough. Hugs and prayers…

  54. Oh Brenda, I am so so sorry. I wish for you comfort and peace with the knowing you were an amazing and loving mama to Charlie.
Be ever so gentle with yourself and remember so many care about you. Sending Peace and Love. Peggy

  55. Oh, gosh, I’m so very sorry. Saying goodbye to our pets is one of the hardest experiences in life. I hope knowing you gave Charlie the absolute best life possible will help you through your grief. ((((Hugs))))

  56. So sorry Brenda. Brings tears.. as I know how hard it is to let them go, on “our” time rather than naturally.. but there comes a point where we just don’t want them to suffer anymore. Our little furbabies are sometimes such fighters for life, bless their hearts. My older cat is becoming in the same condition and I know one of these days, I will have to let her go. Sending hugs and blessings.. for the years you did have with him and all of the wonderful memories…. hugs.. Marilyn

  57. So, so very sorry…wish I had better words to help ease the pain. Take comfort in Ivy where you can.

  58. Brenda, as much as your heart aches right now, I hope in time you’ll come to think of Charlie at peace and playing with darling Abi. Your love for him will keep him close to you always, as it has Abi.
I share your sorrow and will miss your sweet boy.

  59. I read your blog everyday. I had to comment today to express my sadness. I am so sorry for your loss. You were such a loving and devoted mama to Charlie. I truly believe Abi was there waiting for Charlie when he crossed the rainbow bridge.

  60. Brenda, please accept my condolences on losing Charlie. I’m a long time reader and know how very attached you were to your baby boy. Our two labs are a huge part of our world and I know I will be devastated when they pass away. I’m so very sorry for your loss and heart ache.

  61. I’m so sorry for your loss… letting them go peacefully is the last kind gesture we can do for them. And the hardest thing we do for ourselves. I know he felt your love every day of those 15 years. And of course Abi was waiting for him 🙂 Sending you love and comfort from Los Angeles.

  62. You are a wonderful selfless mother and as such you gave sweet Charlie Ross all that you could right up to the end. I believe our pets are in heaven and Abi is with Charlie. Rest now, Brenda. Cuddle Ivy as much as she will allow. We are here for you. That darling little boy will be missed.

  63. My very deepest sympathies … Charlie, breathing freely now, is running with Abi and with my own Myndie Ruth and CoCo

  64. I am so sorry. I know too well the pain that you are feeling right now. Loving a pet like you’ve loved Charlie and Abi is a wonderful part of your life. One day they will be there to greet you. Be easy on yourself now. You need time to heal……

  65. I am so sorry little, sweet, bright eyed Charlie has passed over the Rain Bow Bridge. I am sure Abby will be there waiting for him.
    Hugs to you, Brenda.

  66. I am so very sorry for your loss Brenda. You are a wonderful pet parent and did everything you possibly could to help Charlie. Please know that I understand your pain and am grieving too. I had to have my cat euthanized on Sunday. It is by far the most excruciating decision we have to make as pet parents. My cat was in the final stages of kidney failure. She was with me for 13 years. I truly believe our fur kids are the purest form of unconditional love and there is a special place for them in heaven.

  67. I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet baby boy. You did the right thing by taking him out of his misery, but I know that it broke your heart to do so. All pet lovers are mourning with you.

  68. Oh Brenda,
I wish there was a way to make it easier for you to bear. I know of no one who was as devoted to a pet as you were to Charlie. He had the best life and gave you so much love. In my mind I see Abby there to greet him. Bless them and you.

    Sherry B

  69. Oh. Oh gosh Brenda.
I am heartbroken 💔 for you.
My goodness, you were (and are) the bestest momma ever to Charlie. Abi also.
I know you will miss your sweet boy 🐶 forever.
    That’s how it is.
In our family we’ve experienced the same.
Still, we talk about our pets that were so loved by us. It’s amazing how our minds work in that regard ,,,,,, to desperately missing them.
You did the absolute right thing for Charlie. He didn’t deserve to keep suffering. Even though the/your pain is real, Charlie appreciates the caring you’ve have for him.
Now, give it some healing time Brenda. It helps a little bit. 😢
All of us readers will be thinking of you ,,,,, and of course Charlie & Abi.

  70. I know that there isn’t anything that I can say that will make you feel better. All that I can say is how sorry I am for your loss.

  71. So sorry! You did everything you possibly could. He had wonderful life with you. My heart breaks for you. Our fur babies mean so much to us.

  72. Brenda,
I am so sorry about Charlie. Losing a beloved pet takes such a toll. I will keep you in my prayers.
    Julie

  73. You did what was best for Charlie. Just remember that. And he is not in any pain now. You did what was right and he and Abi will be happy together. I know it hurts. 74. O sweet Charlie Ross. how we loved you!
you were beloved by All of us… but most definitely by your Mom.

    our hearts to yours. XO

  75. Brenda, So very sad to hear this news. The hurt is excruciating. A hard decision but you had his best interest at heart. You gave him his best life and I know your love was deep and strong for your fur baby. RIP Charlie…you were one very cute and sweet guy. Hugs and love Brenda.

  76. Brenda, I am so very sorry…I know how bad that hurts. I will be keeping you in my prayers. Hugs, Roberta

  77. It is so hard to make that decision to let go, but you made the right one. Two of my beloved doggies pretty much went the same way, but honestly Brenda, given my experiences with my dogs, I believe they knew when there time came, and they were at peace with it. It was hard, but also the only way I wanted it to go, to be there with them at the vet’s office through the end. Your readers are grieving with you, and understand the magnitude of your loss. Ivy will need you.

  78. Such heartbreaking news. My condolences as you weather this difficult loss. I am sure meeting Abi over the rainbow bridge was a joy for him. You really were the best mama he could have had. Hugs for you and Ivy.

  82. I’m so sorry Brenda, I know the love you had for him. The best gift is the last gift we can give them – to end their pain, but it is the hardest one to give. Such a sweet boy he was, cherish the memories 💕

  83. Oh Brenda! I am so, so sorry for your loss of sweet Charlie Ross. I know he holds a special place in your heart as all your animals do. Wish I knew what to say to make this easier on you, but no words can suffice. Big hugs to you Brenda. Sandra

    Mary

  92. May knowing your sweet Charlie is no longer in pain comfort you as you mourn his loss. He was much loved by all who knew him.

  93. I’m so sorry……I know that feeling when your most beloved dog is looking into your eyes as he passes away……I’ve experienced it not once, but twice……it is heartbreaking. RIP Charlie.

  94. Oh, my goodness. May heart hurts hearing this sad news. I hope you find peace knowing how much your loving care for him sustained him. You gave him a wonderful life in a loving home. Rest in peace, dear Charlie ❤️

  95. Oh, Brenda, my heart aches for you. I know your pain and the terrible emptiness you feel. You were a wonderful mother and Charlie was one lucky dog to have you. Take comfort in knowing that he is no longer in pain and that he is running and playing with sweet Abi. Thinking of you and sending big hugs….Janice

  96. Oh so sorry, Brenda…such days are so hard!! I know you will miss him…some dogs we never get past missing badly…at least that has been how it is for me. But hope you can have peace knowing you kept him going much longer than probably anyone else could have. That is a good age for any kind of dog!!

  97. Charlie touched some many lives through your blog. He was greatly loved and he will be greatly missed by so many who never met him or had the chance to pet him. Those of us who have lost beloved pets know your loss and pain. You did your very best for him and gave him excellent care. No dog was as attentively cared for as Charlie was. He was a lion in a tiny body guarding you from possums and any critter that dared invade his patio. I know you always made the best decisions concerning Charlie. I think he would thank you for the release from his ongoing pain and struggles. You made every accommodation possible to extend his quality of life. He lived a happy life with you. All dogs would want the life he had. You’re a great Mom, Btenda.

  98. So sorry for your loss. He was such a cute fur baby. It’s very hard to lose one you have had that long. So very sorry. Wilma Swank

  99. I’m so very sorry for your loss. You were the best Mom Charlie Ross could have ever had.
“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but love leaves a memory no one can steal”. RIP sweet Charlie Ross
    XOXOXO

  100. Oh I am so sorry to hear that Charlie has passed on. You both were blessed to have so much time together and I’m sure that Abi is there to greet him in doggy heaven. May you be comforted in knowing that you were the best “mom” both of them could have ever wanted. And hold Ivy tight; she knows what you are feeling and she, too, needs your comfort.

  101. I am so sorry, Brenda. I know how hard it is to make that decision for our babies. I have done it twice. There just comes a time you have to think of them instead of how we feel about them going. Take care. Ivy will be a comfort to you, I’m sure. pam

  102. So sorry for your loss, it’s a tough one as they have your heart, but know that is with them in their better place. You also have the memories of all those wonderful times together as they truly are a part of you forever.

  103. Brenda, I am so sorry.
The time comes when it’s just the kindest thing to do to let them go even though it breaks our heart. I’m glad you had him for a long time. You were the best mom he could have had.

  104. I’m so sorry for your loss. Those of us who have fur babies understand your pain, and the heartbreaking but loving decision to help them cross the rainbow bridge and end THEIR pain. Our sweet pea Springer is 13 and I can already see the day approaching for us to make that very same choice. Your little Charlie Ross had a happy life and that was all because of you.

  105. I am soooo sorry. I know you loved him very much. Abi was waiting for him at the Rainbow Bridge. Both of them knew they were loved I am sure. They both were blessed to have you as their mom! You and Ivy will both need each other to get through the hard days. Love on her and know you were an outstanding mom and gave so much to them.

  106. My heart is breaking. I have loved your dogs over the years. I am so glad you had them. I had two Yorkies. They are so sweet
You were a great mom to them.

  107. Sharing my deepest condolences………………………..if I just had that magic wand, I would wave away the sorrow and pain, leaving only room for the best of memories. Take good care of you as you process through this. Ivy will help you along the way, along with all of us, your follows, as we lift you in prayer.
    RIP sweet boy, Charlie Ross.

  110. I am in tears for you, Brenda. It is so hard. But so relieved for dear Charley to be free of the pain.
    Thinking of you.

  111. Oh my goodness. I know how bad it hurts. I have been there a few times myself. He is happy and playing with the other babies now.

  114. Brenda I am so sorry. Crying here in NY. I loved reading about Charlie. I have a 15 year old pup too. You are the best pet mom.

  115. Oh Brenda, there are no words to express how sorry I am to hear about Charlie. It’s a long time to share your life with a pet and then the time comes to set them free. You were so good to Abi and Charlie. I am thankful you have Ivy to comfort you. Much love, Annette 💞

  116. Brenda I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Charlie Ross. I also have tears running down my face while reading this. Your pets have the best most loving Mom. I can’t imagine how hard this is for you. You will be in my thoughts all day. Take care.

  117. Words are not enough. I’ve tried to write something comforting but I just want to reach out and hug you instead. Just know that he will be in your heart forever.

  118. They are always in our hearts, but it is so hard to let them go. Part of being a good mama is knowing when to say goodbye. You are a good mama. Abbie is there with the great news that they serve pizza. 😢

  119. I never met Charlie but I know he was loved. He knew he was loved. That’s what matters. He will be missed.

  120. Dear Brenda;
I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that you did the very best possible for your beloved Charlie. You gave him the very best life and love and now he is released from the pain. Very best wishes and prayers for you.

  121. I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I myself have been in that position twice and know it is heartbreaking, but knew it was the right thing to do. My best friend just had to make that same heartbreaking decision a few weeks ago but she knew it was the right thing to do. Be Brave, Be Strong in knowing you did all you could do —and beyond The strong know when it is time

  122. I am so sorry…I am crying along with you…I lost my Bella girl at 16, almost 2 years ago…I know that there is nothing I can say…but, time eases the sharpness of the pain.

  123. Brenda big hugs to you. I read this and I am crying so hard for you and I know how hard it is to lose our fur babies.
Abi was waiting for him on the other side of the rainbow bridge and they are no longer in pain.
    Love and prayers for you.

  124. Brenda. I am so very sorry for your loss of your sweet Charlie. I have had to do the same for a beloved soul and know what love it took for you to let him go peacefully so he wouldn’t be in pain. I am so very sorry. I have no doubt that you will miss him, but know that he is free from pain. Take good care.

  125. Brenda, I am so sorry. My heart breaks for you. Glad that you have sweet Ivy to give you comfort in this time of loss.

  126. Oh no, Brenda! I am so sorry and heartbroken for you. I’m not ashamed to admit that I am sitting here with tears running down my cheeks.

Gentle and healing hugs! Love and enjoy Ivy Lou!

  127. Brenda, I’m so sorry to hear that you had to make the hardest decision anyone could ever be faced with. Your own bravery and your love for your sweet boy has stopped his struggle and he’s now at peace and you will be soon. Never did a dog have a better life. Take the time you need to grieve and try to think of the love you and Charlie shared and not just the sadness of yesterday. Much love to you.

  128. I am so so sorry for your loss. I know how much you loved your sweet Charlie and most importantly he knew too. Praying for you in the days ahead.

  131. Oh my dear Brenda, I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Charlie Ross. I know yesterday was extremely difficult and heartbreaking for you. Please know that you did the very best for him throughout his life with you, and in the final gift of releasing him from his pain and suffering. He was such a special boy. Small in stature but big in personality! Loved seeing his pictures and hearing about him. I have no he is at the rainbow bridge with Abi. Sending love and hugs as you feel the grief.

  136. So sorry, Brenda. I know how much you loved him, and how much you will miss him. Our pets give us so much love and devotion, but their lives are too short.

  137. I am so, so sorry for your loss. I did the same for my sweet yorkie, Dixie, last year. Heartbreaking, but the best to stop her suffering. Our babies are forever in our hearts.

  138. I feel for you, Brenda…
I can’t help but shed a tear now as when I started subscribing in your blog, I started knowing Charlie as well.
Rest in peace, Charlie…no more pains…

  139. Brenda: My ache aches for you & I send you hugs & hope that you can take some comfort in knowing that Charlie is no longer in pain & is running free with Abi again. You were a wonderful mom to him & you did all anyone could do for him. It’s never easy to let them go, but there comes that time when we must say goodbye to them for their own sake. Sending you love.
