  1. I used Stonewall Kitchens for food gift boxes for friends and they were wonderful. I will use them again throughout the coming year for gifts as I liked their service and products. I bought several weeks ago some hickory farm items at Target for good prices so snatched them up for stockings and gift bags for friends. Grandkids are getting local stores gift cards as they can get what they will use.

  2. I am in Wisconsin and my husband works in a grocery store. The way the weather looks they have been informed that they might not get a load on Friday. The very high winds/blowing snow may keep the semis off the roads. Plus Monday is their holiday (suppliers), so no deliveries then either. He said that it is a madhouse today! If you people are traveling stay safe.

  3. I, too, remember Hickory Farms being set up in the mall during the holidays. And I’ve sent and received Edible Arrangements several times over the years. I think food gifts are fun and thoughtful.

  4. These are wonderful ideas for gifts. I have used Edible Arrangements many times and also received from them. Gosh, Hickory Farms has been around awhile! I remember them setting up mini stores in malls years ago.
And I also have watch Miranda’s shows on PBS and been impressed. I really should follow through with her program myself.
Thinking of you and hoping life’s a little brighter.

  5. Everyone beware when you purchase Visa gift cards or any money cards. My daughter received a Visa gift card from the doctor who she works for. She tried to use it twice at Walmart when we went grocery shopping. After the second time she went on the website for the card and found out someone had used it at Saks in NY. She called the number on the card and was told if she couldn’t prove she was the owner than there was nothing they could do about it. The doctor luckily saved the receipt and submitted it to the bank that issued the card and they told him they would investigate it.

  6. I have used and received food gifts from Harry & David, Edible Arrangements and Hickory Farms. I didn’t know about GiftSnap at Hickory Farms, that is a great idea!

  7. I enjoy your blog very much. I think you are a gifted writer. I would like to give you an idea to possibly help your pain. Muscle chains. Our muscles work together and when any part of a chain is weak another part over works and can even injure itself. I had debilitating plantar fasciitis, I could not walk without feeling like I was walking on the edge of a knife. The treatment was always just for my foot and I kept being told to rest more. Well I really only could rest so I was very frustrated and depressed. I stumbled across an exercise program called Essentrics by Miranda Esmonde-White. Essentrics is for the whole body and strengthens muscles in their lengthened positions which reduces pain and pressure. As soon as I built up more strength in my hips my feet improved. I don’t think at this point you’d be able to do a lot of the exercises but a lot of the ones done on the floor can be done on a bed or couch. Also maybe your physical therapist could help you design a little exercise routine to strengthen all the muscles of the body. Every person that I have talked into trying this program ends up loving it. You’d be surprised how many muscles are actually connected that help your ankle function properly. I hope you look into it and find the benefits of moving every joint and muscle in your body.

    1. I second this recommendation. I watch the workouts on PBS. She is good at explaining how your body is put together and how the exercises work. Importantly, she emphasizes that you should NOT work through pain, that pain is your body telling you to stop. She shows ways to adapt a movement if you are not able to do the full extension or whatever.

    2. I discovered Classical Stretch (Eccentrics) about two years ago. My back pain improved once muscles in my feet were in better shape. My back continues to improve in little steps. My posture is better now. This is more progress than I could have hoped for when I started.
My Christmas present to myself is another season of this exercise program.
Brenda, I hope you will be able to try the exercises that are appropriate for your specific situation.

  8. I sure do hope that items en route to be delivered to gift recipients by UPS, USPS and Fed-Ex will be delivered on time. By the sound of it, the end of the world will occur by snow beginning tomorrow. I made my usual Wednesday walk to the supermarket this morning and it was a MAD HOUSE! Everybody in my city appears to be panicking because of the snow storm coming tomorrow and also getting ready for Christmas this Sunday. I was out at 10 a.m. (on foot, not driving) and the traffic which is normally very slow this time of day was like shoppers out the day after Thanksgiving! Harry and David’s is a great service and they have an incredible selection as well as price range of gift baskets/items. I also like and have often used Wine Country Gift Baskets (online) who offer a lot of Ghiradelli Chocolates gift baskets as well as food gift baskets and wine gift baskets and combinations of all three. For a splurge on chocolate treats I buy from Bissinger’s (a long-time producer of premium chocolate in St. Louis – but pricey) or Godiva Chocolates (also pricey). My best go-to easy peasy gift though is a gift card from businesses in my city that I know will be used by the recipients (supermarket and special market gift cards, or Home Depot, Lowe’s, Menard’s and TJ Maxx gift cards).

    1. I like to support local businesses when I can too. I don’t plan to go out but I’m wondering if grocery delivery is going to be hampered by the weather too? I imagine it will.
