I’ve found many fun and practical herb garden ideas to inspire you to grow your own herbs. You can even grow them on your windowsill, for that matter. Herbs are wonderful to use when cooking, and they smell heavenly!

Strawberry Pot Herb Garden:
A strawberry pot, also called a strawberry jar, is a specialized, vertical container, often made of terracotta.

It has multiple side pockets and a top opening, perfect for growing strawberries, herbs, or succulents in small spaces.
The design allows for high-density planting, where plants cascade over the sides. This keeps fruit off the ground, clean, and pest-free.

Here, in a blue pot on my front porch, I grow lemon verbena and pineapple sage. It is a northern exposure, but the plants were lush and beautiful. I so enjoy going out and rubbing the leaves, which releases the most wonderful scent!

Stacked herb garden boxes save space and keep things tidy. These are a lifesaver on small patios or balconies. You can grow many herbs and snip what you need.

Companion planting is an ideal way to garden. These herbs also have marigolds growing beside them. It’s a natural pest control.
Spiral Herb Garden:
This spiral herb garden is an excellent way to make use of vertical space. It’s built from stacked stones arranged in a spiral. This type of design allows different herbs to grow based on their exposure and watering needs.
You plant sun-loving herbs at the top and moisture-loving herbs at the bottom. This natural system helps plants grow easily, with minimal effort on your part. This design adds visual interest to your yard and is ideal for a smaller space.

Indoor Bench Garden:
If you only want to grow a small number of herbs, perhaps those you cook with most, plant them in individual pots in a sunny spot.
This little area will tantalize the senses and be a perfect spot for snipping while cooking.
Vertical Herb Garden:
If you only have a small area for an herb garden, grow vertically. Attach the pots to the wood and secure them with brackets.
Fill each tier with your favorite herbs, such as basil, mint, or thyme. This is a great way to grow many herbs in one space.

You can grow herbs in a basket. All a plant needs to grow is a vessel that will hold soil. Provide drainage, and you’ve got a little mini garden you can carry around.
Themed Herb Gardens:
With a theme, you can group herbs by purpose. It gives your garden a story and makes harvesting more fun.
- Pizza garden: basil, oregano, thyme
- Tea garden: mint, lemon balm, chamomile
Rolling Cart Herb Garden
Use a small rolling cart so you can move your herbs in and out of sunlight. It’s practical and gives you a “mobile garden” you can rearrange whenever you like.

Teacup or Mug Gardens
A teacup or mug garden is a miniature, charming landscape created inside a teacup and saucer, perfect for indoor herbs.
Kitchen Window Cut & Grow Garden
Plant a row of your most-used herbs, basil, parsley, and mint, right where you cook. Snipping fresh leaves while you stir a pot makes everyday meals feel special and ensures they are perfectly seasoned with herbs.
Mason Jar Herb Water Garden
Some herbs (like mint or basil) grow easily in water. Place cuttings in mason jars and watch the roots form.
Night Garden
To make it extra fun, string lights around your herb garden area. Sit outside under the stars amid the aromatic herbs you are growing in your garden and enjoy the evening.
It is so much fun to grow herbs, and it’s also practical. I love to walk out on my porch with scissors and snip chives for soup or a baked potato. With your herbs close by or right at your fingertips, you can enjoy these aromatic plants all through the summer months.

I loved your ideas for a herb garden! They all seem so practical and fun. I’m curious, have you found certain herbs that thrive better in smaller spaces versus larger ones? Also, what are your thoughts on using vertical gardening techniques—do you think they could enhance the space utilization even more? Thanks for sharing such inspiration! monkey mart
I adore fresh herbs and can’t wait until my herb garden really gets going. With it still being cold here in IL, nothing can be planted yet. My chives and red sorrel have reappeared as they do every year, and the lemon thyme is starting to show a bit, but that’s it for now. I have to wait til the weather gets warmer to first plant parsley and cilantro, then I will move on to the warmer weather herbs such as basil and rosemary. I just wish I had a wide windowsill in my kitchen where I could place pots of herbs.
really cute ideas…love that circular set up!! Wish we could grow here but they spray so much outside I would not be able to eat anything…
Yeah, that wouldn’t be good.
Great ideas I have a smallish 2nd floor deck. I have lovely pot where I plant my herbs, and also ones I use daily in my window. My favorite herb garden was made out of a wooden wine box, sadly the bottom finally fell thru. But great ideas. Have a Happy Easter
I bet that was a sweet little herb garden!
