Keeping Autumn Decor Simple

I want to keep autumn decor simple and straightforward, and not go dragging out boxes of decor.
If, like me, you just don’t want to get your own boxes of fall decor out of storage, then don’t.
Use what you can pick up outside and the shades of various colors you associate with the autumn season. Bring out the cozy warm throws and maybe switch the pillow covers if you like.
You could use autumn leaves or pine cones or acorns. Golden yellow and burnished red and orange all say autumn to me.
Emphasize Neutral Colors:
When I think of autumn, I think of trees shedding their leaves and then the branches being bare all winter. To me, that can reflect your decor indoors too.
Here you see a living room boasting neutrals. Shades of brown, like the bare tree branches and pine cones and acorns in your path outside.
There’s not much to say “I’m decorating for autumn” except for a few pumpkins and the colors in this room.
Leaves On Canvas:
I absolutely love this idea! So clever, yet simple and fall-inspired.
If you want a DIY project, this one is pretty simple. All you need is a canvas and a handful of leaves. Pin the leaves to the canvas, and you have a simple way to say “hi ya’ll, it’s fall!”
The Colors Of Fall:

This decorating for the season is subtle. Just some fall foliage and candles.
Courtney from French Country Cottage says she’s a big fan of nature inspired decor for her autumn decorating. (And her photos are always phenomenal as well.)
A Bowl Of Acorns:

Acorns are easy to find. Just take a walk around the neighborhood or a park. Elizabeth from Lavender Homefront did just that. And the bowl of acorns on her table look so lovely!
Mixing Vintage & New Autumn Finds:

Liz Marie opted to use autumn inspired colors for her decor, and then added a red mushroom pillow that is fun and whimsical. She says the pillow softens up the formal room.
When I scrolled down farther I saw her adorable turkey pillow and just had to show you that too.
She considers the turkey pillow the show stopper of the room, and I don’t blame her! It’s beautiful!
Vintage-Themed Coffee Table Decor:

The blogger at The Olive Branch Nest decorated her autumn-themed living room with simple decor on her coffee table.
She used a lace runner, a vintage lantern with fairy lights, and a cluster of wheat stems.
All You Need Is Simple Autumn Colors:

And here is a collage of my fall/autumn decorating over the years. Sometimes I’ve acquired fall decor and sometimes I opted for simple. It just depended on the year and what was going on in my life at the time.
My favorites are the photos that have a more natural feel to them. That’s the look I’ll be going for at my new home before long.
And I’ll take you with me as I make that place a cozy home for Ivy and me.

I love the idea of putting a new sign over the old one, so smart! Thanks for the guiding post, u gave me lots of ideas!!!
I agree with u, slope!!! I love the idea of using the sign over the old one. You have such great ideas. I always look forward to seeing this article.
I’m so excited for you regarding your future home search. Not ready to think about autumn/fall yet. I’m still fussing with the arrangement of the framed prints and pictures of butterflies and hummingbirds that I have above the fireplace mantel this time of year. Unless we start getting radically different weather from the very hot and icky steam bath thick air summer we’ve experienced in SE Wisconsin this season, I won’t be thinking about decorating for fall until the leaves actually start turning colors (and not from drought). The photos you put up in this entry are just gorgeous and inspiring. I am finding as I get older that simpler is better – and it saves energy. Nothing better than snuggling under a soft thick throw blanket while reading or scooting around on the computer and watching my favorite shows and movies.
I keep my fall decorating to a minimum – just enough to call it done. LOL
A good plan.
I love the colors of Fall, much of my house is decorated with the colors of fall.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful ideas.
For those who like the mushroom and turkey pillow they are from the John Derian for Target collection last year. You might find one on eBay.
Thank you! I checked Target, and it wasn’t available. eBay is a great idea!
Did a quick check for “stuffed turkey throw pillow” and saw two listings at $120 each for that “John Derian for Target” turkey pillow. Wowsers!
Some really nice ideas here and I agree, the simpler, the better! Though I won’t be decorating for fall for a long time. I keep ahold of summer as long as I can. 🙂
Oh my goodness, I LOVE THE TURKEY PILLOW!!!!! I want one!! I also really liked the leaves on the canvas. Simple, yet so pretty. I feel like it’sa little early still to start decorating for Fall. I usually try to wait until after Labor Day, or when it starts to cool off a little. I love your decorating posts! I can’t wait to see what you do in your next home. And since it will be YOURS, you can do whatever you want to!
Yes, it’s too early to decorate for fall I think. But the seasonal posts usually go up early for Google purposes.
I am right there with you and Ann! I did splurge last Fall and got an off white pumpkin “pillow”. I love the turkey “pillow”. Fall can’t come fast enough for me!
I know. I hate the heat and rarely go outside.
This is what I do now. No boxes of decor. Those I’ve decluttered. No walking around with an item I don’t know what to do with, you know, the one that ends up back in the box for next time. All gone. I use colors of autumn or little things like acorns, that may fit in a drawer. I actually have a hall closet that houses all my Christmas (other than the tree), 4th of July, fall, Easter items. No fit, it goes. I notice more of less than too much. A little bowl of something and a colored towel, a fall scent, a pillow cover. Done. I’ve decluttered everything that made me feel bad, because I couldn’t find a spot for it, or it just made me groan. Also throw away items go a long way – things like real mini pumpkins rather than fake, a real tree, rather than fake, etc. I love fall, but in AZ it’s not happening for a while.
The very idea of going through all my things to move just makes me weary, so I’m with ya. I’m giving some of my quilts to the grandkids.
