The Guest Room

I’m ready to reveal part of the guest room. I’m not finished decorating it. The floor of two walls still has “stuff” to deal with and put away. But you can see the progress I’ve made.

It is not at all fancy. It’s a bed frame from Walmart with Walmart bed sheets—and patchwork and things I already had around the house.
Provide A Cozy Haven For Guests:
What is important is creating a cozy haven for your guests. Give them a decent bed with a comfortable mattress, cozy quilts, and pretty sheets.
I don’t go for Pottery Barn quality because I can’t afford it. If you have money growing on trees, by all means buy the best money can buy.
A guest room is a place to host overnight guests. They don’t really care if you bought the sheets (as well as the bed frame) at Walmart. They’ve come to visit you and to have a good time. They’re there to make memories with you that you can take home.

By the time they slide between those sheets, they might have had a margarita or two (or three) and just want to crash in a soft place.
Add Towels To The Room Before Your Guests Arrive:
Even if you have just one bedroom (as I do), providing bath towels in the guest room would still be a nice touch.
You might also add things like toothpaste and a toothbrush (in case they forgot theirs). A piece of wrapped chocolate lying on the pillow would be another lovely nicety they would appreciate.
If they’re from out of town, you might provide them with a map of the city along with a list of local and unique places to visit.
I know everyone can look at their phone for these things. But a paper map is something concrete they can hold in their hand. They might also want to take it with them when they leave, as a souvenir for next time.
Write the home’s Wifi password down on a notepad. And provide a way to charge their electronic devices at the end of the day.
Fresh flowers or a healthy house plant would give the room a cozy touch. If you live near a Trader Joe’s, you can pick up a pretty bouquet for a reasonable price.

You might add a single-serve coffee maker along with coffee pods, mugs, and spoons if there’s room.
Provide space in a closet for them to hang their clothing, and maybe some reading material to help them wind down before sleep.
A Basket Of Basic Niceties:
A basket with niceties or toiletries is a welcome touch as a host. This might include hand lotion, a notepad and pen, bottles of water, and hand sanitizer.
Add a few snacks in case they get the munchies during the night. Have a candle on the nightstand to provide a welcoming scent to their room.
I’m not expecting guests. But I wanted to have a room ready just in case. Maybe one of the grands will want to stay over one night. At any rate, this is my guest room in the house I call Mamie.

Love the bedroom…the covers, the bed are so nice. My grandparents had a bedframe like that…which says “home” to me!! Lovely ideas as to what to provide guests too.
This bed and bedding are absolutely lovely, especially in front of the window. I love the moldings around the window and the crown molding. Very nice!
The white molding is especially nice.
It looks beautiful, Brenda! You know I’ve always loved your style. It’s perfectly cozy and charming. So funny, I have that Waverly red pillow and that green throw! I hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving my friend!
My daughters got the pillow covers for me off Etsy one Mother’s Day and I got the green throw from Amazon.
I love your guest room , it’s so calm and inviting.
It’s colorful, but I wanted it to be calming as well.
That looks very pretty! The bed frame is really nice and goes well with all of your quilts. I love your windows along with the moulding! Very cheery!
There’s so much more light for house plants now that I’m taking advantage of that. And I thought the bed frame seemed like it could be from another era.
Brenda, looks cozy and inviting. Great job! 👍👍💙🐦⬛
Thanks, Deb!
The guest room looks so cozy and inviting. I couldn’t find flowered sheets anywhere , but I found them at Walmart. They wash well and last a long time. I, like you, cannot afford expensive sheets.
I don’t know what they’ll be like to sleep under, but I love the floral sheets. Gives it a little extra “something.”
Love it! Looks comfy and inviting. Your guests will feel pampered and welcome.
Comfy and inviting is just what I was going for.
Make the candle battery operated, NOT real…. everything else is lovely.
Good idea.
SO CUTE 😍 I have always loved the quilt ladder…💕
I ordered it from Oklahoma City. The wood came from a barn.
Your guest room looks very inviting. Your rooms are always so cozy. I always love looking at your decorating.
I’m enjoying my time decorating.
It’s a beautiful comfy guest room!
I think so!
I love your guest room. As a quilter, I really enjoy seeing your quilts! I know the amount of work that goes into each one plus the love. You have a knack for cozying things! Beautiful!
Hard to believe I made these quilts over 30 years ago.
I LOVE the guest room. I LOVE how all the different colors and patterns blend together and repeat each other, it is very cohesive and not “busy,” it doesn’t look over done (as some bloggers seem to have a tendency to do) and it does not look cheap. Frankly, who the heck cares (and how would most people even know) if a beautiful bed and comfortable mattresses are picked up at an affordable price at Walmart or anywhere else or you spend LOTS more on an antique that nobody cares about and doesn’t know it’s an antique anyway. For sheets, I have learned that for me, cotton/poly blends, although more expensive, work better than less expensive microfiber. It’s disappointing because I can find some inexpensive bargains and microfiber comes in lots of different colors. But I’m a night sweater, I need sheets that breathe and microfiber doesn’t do it for me. The plus side to the higher price for cotton/poly sheets is that I have a few sets 25 to 30 years old and they’re still in good shape even after having been washed more times than I can count. It really is amazing how well those sheets have held up all these years. I’m very curious about what you’ll do for curtains/drapes, if you put any up, or maybe just something across the top of the window, and what art goes up on the walls.
I ordered 2 sets. The other one has blue and white flowers. They are both a cotton blend. Each set was just under $25.
Just a note, I bought Walmart sheets too, because I couldn’t find floral sheets anyplace else, unless they cost an arm and a leg. They are just as nice as any others. Your guest room is lovely, and whoever is lucky enough to sleep overnight in that bed, will love it and the sheets too, no matter where they came from. I can’t wait to see it all…I LOVE the white pillowcases with the flowers. Are they the Walmart set? I think I NEED them, well, Ok, I want them.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and Ivy, and your daughters and grandchildren.
Yes, these sheets are from Walmart. I had the same problem. Couldn’t find floral sheets! I ordered them just a few weeks ago.
So cozy looking. Love the new bed. You’ll have Grandkids and sleepovers all the time. my Gramma’s house was right down Lewis and I remember staying the night and listening to that same train. Oh! It was so comforting. I felt so safe. Happy memories. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
I now find the sound of trains comforting too. Have a great holiday, Susan!
Looks so nice and cozy!! I love how you decorate.
Happy Thanksgiving!!
Janie
I just go for warm and cozy.
So cute and comfy! When my little grands visit, I have a basket on the dresser with water bottles, graham cookies for the kids and specialty cookies for adults. I also add Garretts popcorn or other regional treats that are not available in their state. They clean out that basket every time! The guest room houses their parents and two precious preschoolers so there is an adult monitoring the munching. Lol.
Your house is amazing. So happy for you.
Sounds like you’re very experienced with overnight company!
You’ve created a very inviting room and your tips for guests are good ideas to have on hand. Mamie has such good bones with the molding, trim and wood floors and windows. Older homes have great character and soul! Happy Thanksgiving wishes to you, Ivy and family.
I agree. I’ve never had a home with this much character.
I think the room is quite cozy. I love the quilts! Anyone staying for a visit in this room will be pleased.
I hope so. They might end up with Ivy sleeping with them though.
