Here are 22 ideas for repurposing vintage suitcases into side tables, vignette displays, and other useful, decorative DIY projects.
Instead of buying something new, why not repurpose what we might already have?
Have you ever repurposed a vintage suitcase? I have repurposed two of them. One eventually fell apart. I remember using it as a base for a vignette and for storing craft supplies.
I don’t recall what happened to the other one I repurposed. Sometimes I think of all the things I could create if I still had them. vintage suitcases
I always look for vintage suitcases in thrift shops and antique malls. They’re usually more expensive than I’m willing to pay.
Repurposing Vintage Suitcases:

The stacked vintage suitcases in this photo are a cozy decorative look in a room that appears to be an artist’s refuge.

This vintage suitcase serves as the base for a nature-focused vignette. There is a bird’s nest with wildflowers, a clock, and a small stack of old books. With the suitcase lid open, the inside is also decorated with a phrase and imagery.
All this is displayed on an antique table/desk with brass half-moon pull hardware on the drawers. There is a brass table lamp at one end of the table, which glows over the scene.
A trunk has been reconfigured as a table with an opening where part of the suitcase was removed. It serves as an end table in a living space.
Next to it is a stack of vintage suitcases similar to the end table. The stack of suitcases displays vintage books. The use of vertical space is impressive.
Side Table

This suitcase-turned-end-table is a restored beauty. The top holds a wooden monkey and deer, along with a houseplant.
Here, the upcycled vintage suitcases have been turned into cat beds and hung on the wall. Next to that is another suitcase-turned-end-table.
Repurposed Treasures
One of My Own Images
My own photograph of a vintage suitcase popped up on Pinterest. I don’t even recall taking it.
It’s a photo from my first apartment, the one with the fenced-in patio. I had the vintage suitcase (the one that fell apart) sitting open on a white trunk I painted.
Inside is the “flea market relative photograph” that mysteriously disappeared. That framed photograph was one of my favorite vintage treasures to decorate with. I so wish I still had that framed photo of the lovely woman with the slightest of smiles.
The pretty gold frame was surrounded by other vintage decor. Old bobbins, a pitcher, candles, and an embroidery hoop craft I DIYed.
Seasonal Display
Next to it is a distressed suitcase with other decorative items on top. It appears to be a display for the fall/Thanksgiving season.
Neutral Bedroom with Stacked Suitcases

Here, suitcases have been used to create a table at the end of the bed. It is quite ingenious, with one suitcase sitting upright to lengthen the “table.”

Here is a vintage suitcase repurposed into a display for what appears to be old movie and book storage.
Craft Supply Storage

Vintage suitcases used for craft supplies, similar to the one I used to have. These vary in how they’ve been repurposed to store things like scissors, fabric, and more.
Vintage suitcases make great storage pieces because you can close them and move them from room to room.

Vintage Suitcase Vanity Table

The clever person who created this nifty vanity table should win a prize for one of the most unusual upcycle projects!
The suitcase is filled with makeup and brushes and probably everything a woman would need to get herself made up to go out on the town.
Hairpin legs have been attached to vanity height, and there’s a round stool to sit on.
If there’s a cat bed, why not a dog bed? This little dog looks quite comfy in the suitcase, which is just the right size.
Next to that image is another suitcase table. Or it could serve as a display stand.
A Nature Display
Nature abhors waste. And so should we.” – Unknown

The person who created this upcycled suitcase project obviously loves nature! There is a bird’s nest, various potted plants, and rabbit sculptures.
The display appears to be a vintage-themed spring vignette.
This vignette hearkens back to perhaps the flapper era in terms of style. And the second vintage suitcase image is of another end table with hairpin legs.
The Beauty of Repurposing & Upcycling:
It’s wonderful when someone takes something old and unused and brings it back to life.
Recycling objects isn’t simply about saving money or keeping things out of the landfill. It is about seeing possibility where others might see something ordinary. All the scratches, faded paint, little imperfections, and signs of age can give an object character.
Each piece has a story of where it’s been, and how many lives it’s lived.
Instead of buying something new, look around your home and wonder what an overlooked item might become.
Perhaps the loveliest part of recycling is that the finished object carries a little piece of its history with it. It becomes more than decoration. It reminds us that beautiful things don’t always have to be new.
Sometimes, beauty is found in giving something forgotten another chance to be useful, loved, and appreciated.
In a world that encourages us to replace rather than repair, recycling objects feels wonderfully old-fashioned. It is an invitation to slow down, be creative, and waste less.
Sometimes, the most beautiful things in our homes are the ones that have lived more than one life.
“Anything in existence, having somehow come about, is continually interpreted anew, requisitioned anew, transformed and redirected to a new purpose.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

Such cute ideas! I have never owned interesting suitcases to decorate with but I was glad to donate my basic older suitcases to foster care children who usually carry all their belongings place to place in a garbage bag. I have been donating so much lately as my husband and I are downsizing and it feels so freeing! Have a good day all!
This was a fun post, Brenda! Some people are so clever (not me!!) LOL
I’m always surprised to see what creative people come up with.
