If you have an extra room in your home, you should create an inviting guest room for visitors to stay in. I thought I’d show you my guest room today.
I’ve lived here for almost a year, and this was the last room to get curtains. I’ve had the curtains for months, but last week Rhonda hung them for me. (You may recall that I had 18 windows to add curtains to!)

Ultimate Guest Room Comfort:
Creating an inviting guest room is about designing a space that feels calm, comfortable, and thoughtfully styled. You want this space to be comfy, cozy, and fit your visitor’s needs.
The perfect guest room should feel like a quiet retreat. It should be a space where comfort, calm, and care come together. A guest room shouldn’t feel sterile. Small touches, such as a small vase of flowers, create a sense of thoughtfulness.
The guest room should be welcoming and have good lighting. The bed should be layered with sheets, a cozy quilt or blanket, and fluffy pillows.
A cozy guest room encourages rest and privacy, making their stay enjoyable and memorable. Comfort also reduces any awkwardness guests might feel about staying in someone elseโs home.
Create an inviting guest room that says, “Youโre welcome here.โ Transform a simple spare room into a true retreat, one that leaves visitors feeling cared for and appreciated.
Guest Room Essentials: Creating a Welcoming Space:
When friends or family come to visit, creating a cozy and well-equipped guest room can make their stay extra special. Create a welcoming retreat with a few thoughtful touches.
Hereโs a guide to the best guest room essentials that make visitors feel right at home.

1. Start with Comfortable Bedding
A comfortable bed is the heart of any guest room with soft sheets, fluffy pillows, and a cozy comforter or blanket. If the mattress isnโt new, a mattress topper can make a big difference. Layering the bedding gives guests the option to adjust for warmth and comfort.
The sheets on this guest room bed are a cotton blend I ordered from Walmart. They are soft and comfortable to the touch. I also ordered the bed from Walmart, and it is heavy and sturdy.
2. Add Fresh Towels and Toiletries
Set out freshly washed towels and a basket of basic toiletries, like shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
Guests will appreciate not having to ask for what theyโve forgotten. A small touch like this shows thoughtfulness and care on your part to make them comfortable.
3. Create a Cozy Lighting Setup
Good lighting makes a guest room inviting. Include a bedside lamp or reading light, and use warm-toned bulbs to create a soft glow. If the room lacks natural light, add a floor lamp or string lights for extra warmth and ambiance.
A nightlight in the guest room or bathroom will help guide them during the night. Add a small flashlight to the nightstand drawer in case the power should go out during their stay.
4. Stock the Nightstand
A bedside table is the perfect place for practical details: a clock, tissues, and a small vase of flowers. Include a notepad and pen, and consider a candle for a light, pleasant scent.
Add reading materials such as books and magazines to entertain them before sleep.
5. Provide Storage Space
Guests appreciate a place to unpack. Clear a few drawers or make space in the closet with extra hangers. A luggage rack or bench also helps keep things organized and off the floor.

6. Include Wi-Fi and Entertainment
Donโt forget to write down the Wi-Fi password and leave it on the nightstand. A few magazines, a good book, or access to streaming services can make their downtime more enjoyable.
7. Offer Snacks and Drinks
Keep a few bottles of water and light snacks on a small tray or shelf. If you have space, a mini coffee maker or electric kettle with tea bags is a lovely bonus, especially for guests who like a warm drink before bed.
8. Add Homey Touches
Personal touches make a big impact. A cozy guest room with folded quilts, a throw blanket, or a potted plant can instantly make the room feel welcoming.
9. Think About Temperature Comfort
Guests might run warmer or cooler than you do, so include an extra blanket. Giving them control over their comfort helps them sleep better.
10. Leave a Warm Welcome
A handwritten note or small card that says, โI’m so glad youโre hereโmake yourself at home!โ adds charm and makes your hospitality feel genuine.
When guests visit, a welcoming space helps them feel relaxed and comfortable, almost like theyโre at home.
The nightstand should have a reading lamp and reading material (more on that below). If there’s room, add a chair so they can sit down to put on their shoes or drink a cup of coffee.
Every detail is chosen with your guests in mind.

Think of a favorite hotel you’ve visited in the past. What did it have that you really appreciated and that made you comfortable during your trip? Try to mimic some of those touches when you create your own guest room.

Creating a welcoming guest room doesnโt have to be expensive. With a few thoughtful guest room ideas, you can transform your guest room into a cozy retreat.
The key is to think about what makes you feel comfortable when traveling, and offer the same warmth to your guests.

I have put fresh flowers by the guest bed before. Such a pretty and simple way to make the room feel welcoming. I always provide a fan and a blanket too. I feel like these days, most people are on their phones before going to bed, instead of reading a magazine. Your guest room looks lovely.
Those blue pillow cases are gorgeous!! Room looks most inviting!!
Something I wish all guest rooms and hotel rooms had is what I call a sitting up pillow. My kids call it a “husband”. And a light that you can change the position of and that you can turn off while you’re lying down in the bed.
Your rooms are always so cozy and inviting with lots to keep your eyes happy.
Can I come stay the night?
Sure!
I love the way you have styled your bed! It’s very colorful and welcoming! And the quilts on the “ladder” are charming! Well done, Brenda! (I might add that I have lived in my current house for 4 years and have yet to put curtains in the guest room, or added a cozy rug to the hardwood floor, or put a bedspread on the bed!)
Everything I’ve read says to use subdued colors in a guest room. But as you can see, I didn’t do that!
What a pretty room you’ve created. I’ve seen a photo of that room before on your blog…I thought that was YOUR bedroom!
No, my bedroom is in the middle and is the smallest.
Love this! And the room is perfection๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ
Thanks!
I want to stay there!
I have been a guest in other people’s homes. I’ve had to sleep on lumpy mattresses with squashy pillows. Another pet peeve: no bedside lamp. I like to read in bed and I would have to get out of bed to turn off the overhead light. Of course I would be wide awake after having to get up.
I have always had at least one, if not two, lamps next to the bed. I have one on each side of my bed.
Thanks for some great suggestions. Your guest room looks so pretty and cozy and I love the bed coverings. The curtains are hung so nice and they the perfect finish to the room.
Rhonda has better balance than I do, so she stood on the bed and hung the curtains.
