It’s important to find moments of joy in house cleaning, rather than dreading the task. You can always find ways to entertain yourself while getting things done.

I know when my house is tidy and sparkling clean, I feel more whole and complete. Tidy house, tidy thoughts, I guess you might say.

You can find joy in house cleaning by enjoying the sight of clean dishes, fresh flowers, and shining silverware.

I enjoy the simplicity of everyday household chores, a routine I could practically do in my sleep. Sometimes I hum as I move from room to room, keeping my home cozy and clean. A job I repeat day after day.

Cleaning your home is a gentle invitation to fall in love with the everyday rhythms of home.

I always dreamed of having an old house with a front porch, a structure bound to the earth for over one hundred years and counting. And now that I have it, it holds me safely within its walls. I give; it gives; the process is shared equally; and maintenance is a form of life.

Daily Rituals of Homekeeping:

There’s a steady reassurance in the daily rituals of homekeeping easily overlooked in a fast-paced world. When approached with a positive attitude, we can learn to find joy in cleaning our homes.

Romantic Notions of Daily Chores:

The day begins with the simple act of tending to what needs to be accomplished.

There is beauty in the way morning light spills across a worn wood floor. Folding laundry becomes a form of meditation. Dishes in warm, soapy water glisten like treasures instead of burdens. Even dusting feels the tracing of one’s love across each surface.

Do you recall your grandmother carrying a basket of wet laundry out to the clothesline? I remember the sheets flapping in the Oklahoma wind. I can still hear that sound in my mind.

There’s something so gratifying about the fresh scent of clean linens that were dried in the sun. Years ago, when it was time for sleep, I could still catch a whiff of that wonderful smell that defined my childhood.

View Housework Through a Different Lens:

Housework, often regarded as drudgery, takes on a different meaning when viewed through a different lens. It is not just a chore, but something that binds us to our homes and makes us love the sturdy walls that surround us.

There’s a welcome simplicity at the sight of a freshly scrubbed sink. An olfactory delight in the scent of furniture polish as it’s worked into the grain of an old table.

There may be a sudden flash of memory of your grandmother bustling about the kitchen, wearing her cotton apron. Cooking, cleaning, and getting things done. For a moment, she is there, and the hazy recollection is comforting.

Freedom, Fresh Air, & Peace Of Mind:

There’s a sense of freedom when the windows are open, letting in fresh air and the sound of birds singing.

A breeze reaches out and cups your cheek lovingly, so soft that you can barely feel it. There is a tranquil moment or two as the air moves, making the curtains billow in and out.

Stop, and let the moment give you solace.

The necessary tasks of housekeeping are about seeing beauty in the ordinary and giving even the most minor tasks a touch of reverence.

Home is more than four walls. It’s a place where laughter and fun live. And where my kitties run up and down the hall, tumbling and playing like children.

Standing at the Kitchen Sink:

I enjoy standing at the kitchen sink staring out the window. The best ideas come to me when I’ve got my hands sunk deep in the sudsy water. The same chore, years apart. Day after day. Month after month. Year after year.

Sometimes I’ll be standing in the kitchen cutting up onions or vegetables for a salad or a casserole. Or I’ll put a meal in the crock pot to simmer and cook all day while heavenly smells waft from the kitchen.

It’s a feeling of care and accomplishment. Knowing that supper is taken care of, and there’s nothing more to do until it’s cooked and ready to serve.

1. Begin with Gratitude

Start by seeing your home not for what it lacks, but for all that it is. Every wall that shelters, every window that lets in light, every familiar floor creak. Where every sweep, scrub, and spritz is a way of saying, ‘Welcome home.’

Gratitude opens the door to joy in the ordinary. Cleaning becomes calming. Cooking becomes creative. Tidying becomes nurturing.

Here I am, an adult, often standing at yet another kitchen sink filled with sudsy water and dirty dishes. Washing them is a task so common and ordinary that I could almost do it in my sleep.

3. Make Beauty Part of the Routine

Add small touches of beauty to your day. Snip garden flowers and put them in a vase on the counter. Unfold a fresh tea towel to dry the dishes. Pour dish soap into a pretty bottle.

4. Embrace Imperfection

Your home doesn’t have to look like a magazine. Lived-in can be lovely. A little clutter means life is happening all around you.

A home is not meant to be a museum. It’s a story in progress, a place to be wholly yourself.

Slow down as you spray and polish the bathroom mirror. Smile at your reflection as you clean the glass until it’s shiny, clean, and sparkling.

5. Create Rhythms, Not Rigid Schedules

Establish rhythms that make sense of your days by creating a loose schedule in your head.

Tackle laundry on Mondays, freshen the sheets on Fridays, and tidy up nightly before bed. These patterns help you feel grounded and offer a sense of peace and predictability.

6. Make It Meaningful

When you sweep the floor, you’re making space. When you cook a meal, you’re offering warmth and comfort. And when you fluff the pillows or fold a favorite shirt, you’re caring.

It’s about seeing cleaning not as a duty but as a way to tend to the soul of the home.

How to Make Housework Fun:

Housework can become enjoyable. It’s all in the mindset and the ways to turn chores and house cleaning into moments of joy.

You’ve decorated your home with treasures found over the years, perhaps precious objects handed down from generation to generation. You’ll want to care for them with a loving heart.

Make It a Sensory Experience

Put on your favorite music, light a candle with a cozy scent, or open the windows to let in a breeze. Let the sound and scent create a mood. Dance between tasks or hum as you put clean sheets on the bed.

Use Pretty Tools and Supplies

A floral dustpan, a linen apron, or a glass jar of homemade cleaner with citrus peels are small details that make the experience more beautiful. Use attractive tools to brighten your day.

Find joy in house cleaning by straightening the kitchen things on a shelf and hanging the dish rag up to dry.

Embrace the Physical Movement

Washing windows, sweeping floors, and making beds are all ways to stay active and feel productive. It’s an exercise that yields instant results, such as breathing in a clean room free from dust.

At the end of the day’s chores, you’ll have a neater, cozier space. And that is its own reward.

See It as a Form of Self-Care

You’re not just cleaning your home; you’re caring for yourself and your surroundings. Straightening a bookshelf or lining up cans in the pantry can feel soothing.

See these acts as a way of clearing your mind of arbitrary worries. Sweep the doldrums away and make more room for light and joy.

Create a Routine

Start with a warm cup of coffee and end with a vase of fresh flowers. Familiar patterns make the task feel like a comforting ritual instead of a dreaded job. It is these little gifts you give yourself that bring a form of satisfaction to house cleaning.

With the proper perspective, housework becomes less of a task and more of a productive cadence. It clears the mind of cobwebs, giving you a newfound sense of clarity and fulfillment.

There’s something so satisfying about completing the household chores. Something else to cross off the day’s calendar I keep in my head as I move through the seasons of my life.

  1. Cleaning is not my favorite thing to do, but I definitely like the way it looks and how I feel afterwards. It helps to either listen to music or talk to a friend on the phone while I’m doing my chores. I also have a cleaner that I got on Amazon that smells like the volcano candles. Same scent! It smells so good, it makes cleaning more enjoyable… kinda, lol.

    1. I’ve never heard of those candles.

  2. Gratitude–I think I need to focus on feeling gratitude for having a home to clean and care for. So many people nowadays no longer have the comfort of a roof over their heads and a clean, warm bed to sleep in.

    1. I see the homeless out in this heat and feel gratitude for an air-conditioned home.

    2. You make a very good point Debra! Thanks for reframing it that way!

You have someone come clean your home, therefore enjoying it after it’s cleaned is totally different than cleaning it yourself.Especially those of us who read your blog that aren’t retired and then have to clean our home on a Saturday or Sunday. It’s not as enjoyable.

    1. I have someone come in now to do the big stuff that I can no longer handle. But I do all the day-to-day cleaning, etc. Oh, how I wish I could do it all myself. I mentioned to my daughter the other day that I was thinking about doing it all myself again, and she said she didn’t think that was a good idea due to my health issues.

      1. Brenda, how do you afford to have someone come in and do heavy-duty house cleaning when you are a senior citizen? Just wondering…my aunt is in her 70’s and my mom 85 and there’s no way they could afford to hire someone to clean. They both do everything themselves. My aunt has thyroid cancer, is diabetic, has had both knees replaced, and currently has 2 huge hernias that need surgery. My mom is OK for her age, but of course has some issues…vertigo, some bad food allergies, thyroid autoimmune stuff that flares.

        1. My income is social security and blog income.

  4. I think I’m the only one in the world that loves staying home and doing housework. I will say it’s getting more difficult to vacuum due to my pinched nerve in my back, but I have never ever been bored. I love doing laundry and cleaning and all that. I do wish they’d bring back the old stuff – when you could use ajax in the tub and it smelled clean and not like perfume. Everything has perfume in it and it’s gross, but I would like a nice clean smell. But I don’t use smelly stuff anymore – just soap. If I had my mobility back all my laundry would be hanging on the line.

    1. I was never bored with house cleaning, but I have to have someone do the big stuff. If I had my mobility back, life would look so different!

  5. I love this post! I love my not so perfect home. There are somethings I love to do and some not so much. I love to hang clothes in the hot summer or winter with a little snow on the ground! I can’t wait to be able to let the cool fall breeze drift through the windows. I was just watching 2 baby deer and their mom having a little dinner on the back lawn. They probably just ate more of my hostas up close to the house that I haven’t seen yet. But like I said I love my cozy, not so perfect home! Enjoy the week all!

    1. I think a perfect home would be boring.

      1. Yes, and I love to decorate and switch up what I already own around the house. Prices are going up everywhere and it is a fun challenge to rearrange your decor. There are 37 houses in our neighborhood and we are starting more and more with bartering and sharing. That’s the way it should be!

  6. This was so enjoyable to read, and about cleaning mostly! I love all the homey pictures too. My husband runs the sweeper daily and I try to keep things neat and picked up. I can’t wait until the weather cools down and the windows and doors are open again, especially at night when the windows are open and at 3am you might wake to hear a single bird singing then getting up at 530am and the birds are singing and ready for the day!. I’m not a fan of air conditioning but its been a life saver this hot summer. Thanks for all your interesting tips and I think I will definitely be dusting tomorrow!

    1. I don’t think I’d survive in this humid climate without air conditioning. But then, I have to remember that plenty of people have no choice in the matter, and then I feel grateful.

  7. Oh my goodness Brenda all those tasks made me dizzy! I have to say my house is clean, beds always made with clean sheets, clothes washed and put away, a supply of home made goodies in the fridge etc., but most days I can’t wait to get to my craft room! I love the solitude for a few hours. My husband is around but he is busy doing his exercises (which is a must because of his RA) gardening or something in his workshop. We come together to go shopping, at meal times and again in the evening to watch TV. And then there is those pesky doctor/hospital appointments. It seems to us once a doctor has you they keep sending you somewhere for some test or another, I must say they do ask if that is something we would want to do! Mostly we don’t want and sometimes they accept that.

  8. It is a good thing I don’t mind vacuuming because my Husky Kassie is shedding in the house and on the porch. My dishwasher has been broken for 10 years, it is not missed. Like you I also like living in an old house. Looking forward to Fall when the windows can be opened.

    1. I’ve used my dishwasher one time.

      1. You know I don’t use the dishwasher!!! I love having the sink under the window looking out into the backyard. I wrote my comment before I read all the others and I wasn’t surprised everyone is ready for the cooler weather!

  9. When my house is cluttered (especially after a visit from grandchildren) and I’m exhausted, I just flop on the couch for a break, then make myself get up and pick up just ONE thing from each room….then back to the couch! Repeat as often as needed. I’ve also challenged myself to do three small cleaning jobs a day. Just three. Manageable. Often find myself done by noon and deciding to treat myself to another one or two. The smug feeling having won that game with a bonus is unmatched!
Note: often, my one pick up is catnip mice discarded by Mittens or Pumpkin. When I return for round two…there they are again! lol

    1. Ha, ha…funny. Nice cleaning strategy though.

    2. There are cat toys everywhere in my house. They’re like children. I like how you divide your chores up.

    3. I like how you divide your chores into small, manageable tasks, so as not to get overwhelmed. Slow and steady wins the race!

      1. I divide the chores primarily by how long I can stand up to do them.
