My bohemian living space is coming together now. I’ve been working on a painting project all week.

What is Bohemian Style?

Bohemian décor style, often called boho style, is a relaxed, creative decorating approach that embraces individuality and a collected-over-time look.

Rather than following strict design rules, bohemian spaces mix colors, textures, and patterns to create a warm, lived-in atmosphere.

Bohemian decorating often creates a sense of refuge. Houseplants, books, personal collections, and comfortable seating encourage relaxing and enjoying life.

The emphasis on personal expression also allows a home to reflect individual interests rather than decorating trends.

Trunk + Shelf Redo:

This old trunk, which I’m using as a coffee table, was in my closet. It was brown, scarred, and discolored.

It now has many coats of white paint, giving it new life. White is always so refreshing and clean looking!

The shelf on the table was red. It’s been painted a fun peachy color. One of the fun things about decorating in a bohemian style is all the bright, funky colors you can use!

The Red Hutch is No Longer Turquoise:

This was my red hutch, which is now a sort of turquoise color. I replaced the white knob with a bright pink one, adding a bit of whimsy. The color of the hutch’s paint came from one of the colors in the quilt on the wall behind the couch.

When decorating bohemian style, you can use every color in the rainbow. Or the coloring box! Choose bright bold colors to paint furniture to give it a new lease on life. If you don’t like it, you can always paint over it.

But embrace the bohemian style,

House Plants Go With Bohemian Style:

I love seeing house plants in the light that comes through the slats of these window blinds. It’s a bit muted but gives low-light plants plenty of bright light.

House plants fit in perfectly with the bohemian decorating style.

Think 1970s, macrame hangers, and lots of plants in every nook and cranny. House plants are as popular now as they were then—and I had lots and lots of them!

I painted terra-cotta pots for my plants in various colors. It was actually a lot of fun to try all these colors.

I recall everyone having lots of wicker in the 1970s, and we put basketry on the wall as wall decor. It was a fun way to bring texture into a room. We didn’t know at the time, or I didn’t, that we were creating a bohemian living space.

We just knew it was the seventies and eighties and baskets were very popular along with other global decor.

If you’re looking for a fun style for your home, try creating a bohemian living space. I’ve found that it kind of grows on you.

You don’t have to go out and buy everything new. Shop your home. You might find a piece of furniture that you can paint in boho style. Gather baskets from other rooms and bring them into your bohemian living space.

Buy some fun, bright paint colors to paint the walls and to pull the look together.

My Bohemian Living Space:

My bohemian living space has lots of bright colors and house plants and books to make it a cozy refuge. I like to sit in here and drink a cup of coffee or gaze at birds out the window.

Easy Ways to Add Boho Style:

1. Layer a patterned rug over natural flooring.
2. Add several houseplants of varying heights.
3. Mix throw pillows with different textures.
4. Display vintage or handmade treasures.
5. Incorporate woven baskets for storage.
6. Use warm ambient lighting instead of harsh overhead lights.
7. Add natural materials such as rattan, wood, and linen.

The result is a home that feels cozy, artistic, welcoming, and uniquely personal rather than perfectly matched or formal. My bohemian living space gives me a great deal of joy and satisfaction.
