Sunday Snippets 6/11/23
The perennial purple canna has bloomed. In the below photos I show what it looked like in full bloom, and below that the bloom as it first appeared.
The photo below shows it unfurling. All those little spiky red tube-like flowers had to fully open.
Moonflowers:
I planted the moonflower seeds.
The delicate white bloom will appear in the day time, all rolled up like a Tootsie roll. Somewhat like a ghost, it will open up in the dark. It might bloom on a cloudy day as well.
The flower will be between 3 to 6 inches in size. Like the morning glory, it will last just one day. The moonflower is scented to draw night-flying moths for pollination purposes.
Both the moonflower and morning glory seeds I planted came up practically overnight. I nicked and soaked them both overnight to speed up the process.
The Trellis For The Moonflower Vine To Grow On:
I have the moonflower and morning glories sprinkled in the top galvanized container. Probably within a week they will be twining around the trellis.
I’m hoping that the vines will provide shade for the plants in the lower galvanized containers.
Lunch With Steve:
Steve and I went to Merritt’s Bakery Friday to share a sandwich and a piece of cake for lunch. They have really good Reuben sandwiches. You get a piece of cake with your meal.
He’s gone a lot now, so these occasional lunches help us catch up.
When he comes to play with Ivy, about once a week, she gets most of his attention. Or I should say, she demands most of his attention.
He’s got some three trips lined up. One in July, one in August, and in September he’s traveling to Scotland with a man from his church.
What I’m Watching:
I’m streaming a TV show called “Suspects.” A female boss and the two detectives working under her are assigned cases where they go about solving crimes.
I watch two to three episodes each evening. So I’ll be done watching all of it soon, even though it has 5 seasons.
It’s on PBS Masterpiece. As you know, I like to watch British crime shows on the “telly,” as they like to say.
What I’m Reading:
Last night I began reading a book called “The Guest Room.”
The main character in this book is Steph. Her husband has moved out and her daughter is married. The son has not been heard of in a decade over a family argument.
Steph works during the day, but when she comes home she feels that someone has been inside. She smells cigarette smoke, and it looks like someone has been sitting on her bed.
The windows are left open and rain is blown inside. There are all these telltale signs that someone is visiting her when she’s not home.
As a person who works for a charitable organization helping the homeless find a place to live, she encounters many desperate people. But she doesn’t think any of them would follow her home to terrorize her.
Then, to help make ends meet, she takes in a boarder; a young man named Noah. And the rest remains to be seen.
Lately I’ve been reading books and then I take them to Pat across the sidewalk. She likes the same kinds of books that I enjoy reading.

The addition of the trellis is going to work nicely. We have a cactus that blooms at night and if I remember correctly, it’s only once a year. Don’t quote me! LOL
That book would frighten the heck out of me. Bet it’s a good one though.
It’s wonderful that you and Steve had an opportunity to get out for lunch and a little catch up time.
Enjoy your evening!
Sounds like a delicious lunch with Steve. How wonderful for him to have so many opportunities to travel, he will love Scotland! It is my favorite place in the world!
Have a wonderful week Brenda!
We just started listening to What Happened to the Bennetts by Lisa Scottoline. It’s been on my Goodreads Want to Read list since you reviewed it. It engaged us right from the start, and we are enjoying it. Sure starts with a sad event… (I do not like sad books!)
The Moonflower is gorgeous and its habit of opening only at night and providing nourishment for moths is fascinating. What a remarkable, multi-faceted phenomenon nature is! But I have heard in the past that these plants are poisonous. Wondering if I heard correctly?
I love the way you’ve mixed flowering vines on your trellis!
I would love to plant some Moon Flower seeds but I would never see them bloom! We watch TV from about 7 until 9-30 and then we go to bed, more often than not one or both of us have slept while watching something usually on netflix. It is not that we are not interested in what we have chosen, it just happens. Our TV room is in the basement and my bedroom is also there so I wouldn’t even pass a window to look out on the garden and Simon wouldn’t think to look out as he goes to his bedroom upstairs! It really is pathetic or laughable!
I imagine the bloom might be there at 9:30. Your schedule sounds like mine.
Brenda, you inspired me to go back and watch Shetland…omg, that is such a good show, and I loved Jimmy Perez. I was so sorry when it ended, but on to other British mysteries. I always enjoy your blog with the outside landscaping and the inside decorating. Warm hugs, charlotte
I hate that he’s leaving the show!
