Sunday Snippets 2.25.24
I don’t have a lot of news for today’s Sunday Snippets 2.25.24. I’m feeling much better.
I was sick for 4 weeks. And I still get nauseous at times and have to take the anti-nausea medication. But I’m getting stronger and yesterday I didn’t have to take one at all.
Both my daughters have the flu. I’ve had the flu twice in my life and don’t want to end up with it again.
Did you know that you can buy a Covid test that also tests you for flu? Kasi used one to see what was wrong with her, and it turned out she did not have Covid. But she had flu A.
I Googled and it seems that most people are infected with the influenza type A virus. Kasi and Kendra think they both got it from the assisted living facility where their dad is on hospice.
I mentioned to you that the people who are supposed to be caring for him are not doing a very good job. And for what these places charge, you’d think you’d get a better level of care.
So the girls go there as much as they can to make sure he gets food, etc. They make sure to cut his food up in tiny pieces so he doesn’t choke on it. They change diapers. He’s terribly weak.
Everyone should be able to “age in place.” And unfortunately that doesn’t happen enough. Old people are shuttled to care homes where they don’t always get a hell of a lot of care.
Growing up, I was taught to have the highest respect for my elders. To defer to them. And to help them as much as I could.
Spring Is On The Horizon:
Sunny days remind me that spring is on the horizon. Just over the hill. Today is supposed to be 77 degrees here.
Yesterday I began looking at the herb and plant sites I ordered from last year.
I ordered herb plants for my mostly container garden from The Grower’s Exchange. And perennials from Great Garden Plants. Both companies sent good healthy plants.
I really like shopping at Southwood Nursery. The problem is in being able to stay on my feet for very long, and standing in line to pay. I can sometimes handle the smaller nurseries, so I’ll probably do a little of that.
What I’m Watching:
Last night I started watching “Breaking Bad” for the second time. Greg said it’s his favorite series of all time. I told him “Longmire” was right up there in my book as well.
The Story Line:
In case you haven’t watched it, “Breaking Bad” is an American crime drama television series created by writer and producer Vince Gilligan. It aired 2008–2013 on the American Movie Classics (AMC) cable network.
Did you know that the title is a colloquial expression from the South, meaning “to raise hell.” Well, I didn’t.
The show was a popular and critical success and a breakout series for many of its cast members, in particular its lead actor Bryan Cranston. He was perfect for that role.
The Plot: Walter White (Bryan Cranston) is an underpaid, dispirited high-school chemistry teacher. He is struggling with a recent diagnosis of stage-three lung cancer that is inoperable.
White turns to a life of crime. He partners with a former student, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), to produce and distribute methamphetamine to secure his family’s financial future before he dies.
“Breaking Bad” premiered on AMC on January 20, 2008, and concluded on September 29, 2013, after five seasons consisting of 62 episodes.
What I’m Now Reading:
I’m currently reading Leslie Wolfe’s “If I Go Missing.” I’ve always loved puzzles or crosswords. And psychological thrillers are like puzzles to figure out to me.
Book Summary:
If you’re reading this, I’ve gone missing.
I close the binder I’ve been writing in, and walk into the living room. As I stare out of the window at your house next door, I think about all the things I stand to lose if someone comes for me.
My handsome, loving husband, who has no idea what I’ve done. My family, who have supported me no matter what. This beautiful home near the ocean, where I thought I would be safe.
Everyone says that I’m paranoid, but I just think I’m prepared. My secrets have placed me in terrible danger.

That’s a great tip about the combination Covid and flu test! I wasn’t aware of those, but it makes perfect sense, especially during these times. It’s good to know Kasi was able to get a clear diagnosis and hopefully recover quickly from the flu.

I’m so sorry your girls are sick. They are such sweethearts, making sure their dad is taken care of. It seems like once older people can’t take care of themselves anymore, a lot of them end up in homes. It’s sad. Your way of being brought up doesn’t seem to apply these days. Maybe because our children are having to work so hard, just to make ends meet, that they just don’t have time to take care of the constant, daily needs of their elders. Not necessarily that they don’t want to, or done care, but just that they can’t afford to do it themselves. I don’t know. But it does make aging in place more difficult. That is a precious picture of Ivy, by the way!
Glad you are some better, Brenda…seems life holds a lot of adjustments for so many of us these days, due to covid and its aftermath. Keep doing what you can to shore up your immune system. Nothing natural comes quickly but I can look back a few years now and see that some of our health issues are indeed much better…our arthritic pain for one is mostly gone. That is a welcome improvement!!
Oh so very happy you’re doing better… although I haven’t commented for awhile, I have kept you in my thoughts and prayers too.
Thank goodness that you’re feeling better.
Your daughters are so wonderful for looking out for their dad. My father has recently been admitted to a nursing facility. One day he was a strong and healthy 91 year old man and then he came down with Covid and that led to pneumonia. He ignored his symptoms until his oxygen levels were very low. This caused damage. My eldest sister was on his checking accounts, but he became paranoid about her and took her off and changed his passwords. Now she is having trouble paying his bills and taking care of his affairs. His moderate dementia is having awful consequences.
Briana, I am so sorry that you are going through this. I went through similar situation with my own father who passed away in 2022. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Thank you so much. I very much appreciate prayers and I accept them with gratitude.
My dad is nearing the end now. His suffering will soon be over.
So glad to hear you are feeling better!
Such good news to hear that you’re feeling better. That’s interesting about the title of Breaking Bad. I remember years ago I started watching it and enjoyed it until it got too dark, but maybe I’ll try again. That book looks interesting, too. It isn’t usually the type of book I read but I think I’ll check the library for it. Your post brought a tear to my eye when I thought about all your daughters are going through with their dad and then getting sick on top of it. You must be so proud of them… it shows what a good mother you are that they love and care for their father when he really needs them. Enjoy planning and shopping for your garden!
I’m so glad you’re feeling better. Four weeks is way too long to be ill. Ugh!
Continue to rest, rest and rest and soon you’ll be back to normal.
