The New Medical Series “The Pitt”

Have you seen or heard of the new medical series “The Pitt,” which stands for Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital? I’m watching the series on HBO Max.

The first season was a rousing success, averaging 10 million views after its January 2025 premiere. This series has already been renewed for a second season.

I first recall watching Noah Wyle in his role as a doctor on ER, along with George Clooney, in 1994. Wyle and Clooney are said to be good friends still. Clooney publicly praised Wyle’s work on his new show “The Pitt.” ER ran until 2009 and was a very popular series.

While “The Pitt” is not an ER spinoff, the two shows share creative similarities. “The Pitt” is set in a hospital emergency room. It also features Noah Wyle in a leading role and has several key individuals involved in both productions.

However, the creators of “The Pitt” maintain it is not a continuation of ER. It’s a separate medical drama exploring the challenges faced by emergency medical professionals in the post-COVID world.

This new medical drama follows a group of ER doctors working at a hospital in Pittsburgh. Each episode follows an hour of Dr. Robby’s (Wyle) 15-hour shift as chief attendant in the trauma hospital’s emergency room.

Why “The Pitt” Captured My Interest:

I became interested in the series for several reasons. One is that my granddaughter loves “The Pitt” and told me to watch it.

Second, I recently watched “Animal Kingdom“. Actor Shawn Hatosy, seen in the photo above, was very compelling in that six-season series.

After “Animal Kingdom”, I was left wanting to watch anything else Hatosy had acted in.

The Pitt Has The Feel Of The Netflix Hit “Adolescence”:

“The Pitt” is the first medical show designed for streaming. The show has the feel of the highly acclaimed “Adolescence” on Netflix. Adolescence was a miniseries that captured the hearts of many.

Many say that “Adolescence” is the most riveting show of the year, and that nothing else comes close. I’d agree with that assessment.

However, I’d say that “The Pitt” is the most engrossing medical drama of the year. And that it has the same realistic feel to it as “Adolescence.”

Why “The Pitt” Series Is So Outstanding:

In “The Pitt”, Noah Wyle plays Dr. Michael Robinavitch, the senior attending physician.

His facial expressions clearly convey each of Dr. Robby’s feelings as he deals with one emergency after another. There’s drug abuse by medical professionals, the emotional fallout of dealing with traumas, and a mass shooting in “The Pitt.”

This series explores what you imagine happening in a stressful medical setting. There is the formulaic nature of any big city emergency room, where the staff treats patients right off the street.

“The Pitt” deals with urgent issues, such as gun violence, hospital staffing shortages, and the lasting effects of the pandemic.

If you watch this series, you’ll quickly notice that “The Pitt” doesn’t have background music. This serves to make the realism of what happens in the series even more authentic.

“The Pitt” has earned significant praise for its respectful depiction of medical workers, including the sacrifices. There is both an emotional and physical strain that emergency room work demands of doctors and nurses.

Noah Wyle’s Role In Bringing Us “The Pitt”:

Noah Wyle played Dr. John Carter in the hit medical show “ER”. After 11 seasons, the actor thought he was done playing a doctor and actively avoided it for 15 years.

Then came COVID-19. He began receiving letters from first responders. They told him that he and the show inspired them to enter the field of medicine.

Wyle shared these letters with John Wells, the executive producer of ER. “If you ever want to make a show about what’s happening here, even though we said we’d never do it again, I might be ready to volunteer,” Wyle told him.

And so “The Pitt” came to be and arrived on our screens. Wyle said when he slipped a stethoscope around his neck, he felt right at home. But there was a lot of medical technology that had emerged over the past 15 years to become familiar with.

You have to wonder how the actors in “The Pitt” managed to memorize so many lines, as well as the medical jargon.

The casting meant looking for people with theater backgrounds and those who were adept at memorizing large amounts of dialogue. They also needed to be very good with props and to perform various tasks during a procedure.

The show was cast internationally. Actors were found in Australia, England, and on the East and West Coasts. This meant introducing young and unknown talent.

Integral to the meticulousness and accuracy of the show is Dr. Joe Sachs, a board-certified emergency room physician. He was a technical advisor and wrote on ER, and is back with “The Pitt” series. He brought a professional eye to the trauma scenes.

What’s Coming Next For “The Pitt”:

Noah Wyle wrote two episodes of the first season. He was an executive producer and star of the series, working alongside John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill. Wells and Gemmill were also involved in the creation of “ER,” where Wyle starred as Dr. John Carter.

The last episode of “The Pitt” season one, titled “9:00 P.M.”, aired on April 10, 2025. It was the season finale and the 15th episode of the series at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. 

The popular Pittsburgh-set medical drama snagged 13 Emmy nominations, including for best drama and best actor. 

Production for Season 2 is underway. The second season of “The Pitt” will be set 10 months after the conclusion of Season 1.

Season 2 will set the Fourth of July in Pittsburgh and premiere in January 2026. Each episode will continue to focus on a 15-hour shift, with each episode representing one hour of that shift.
