Martha’s Vineyard Beach Cottage

This Martha’s Vineyard beach cottage is not just one home. There are three cottages on the site of “Chappy”, as the locals call it.

There is a trio of tiny 1930s structures that were once used as guest cottages, but were being sold as a single unit.

When Phoebe and Mike bought it, they were careful not to undo the historic charm. So they took a light touch in terms of decorating these cottages.

Phoebe, who owns Red Dirt Farm, filled them with a pieced-together collection of furniture and artwork.

Much of the furniture and artwork came straight from her family’s own longtime home in Martha’s Vineyard.

Shop Round Dining Tables

Shells and sea glass are collected on the latest beach walk and left to dry on the windowsill.

Phoebe had no plans to rip the home apart. She wanted the original bones of the house kept intact.

So she patched rotted spots and gave the surfaces light coats of paint.

The sailboat weather vane from Phoebe’s grandfather’s Martha’s Vineyard home now sits on the mantel.

Phoebe’s philosophy in decorating the home was that everything must withstand two dogs, drippy bathing suits and sandy feet.

Shop Wingback Chairs

The furniture is worn, chippy and aged. And handed down over generations.

A weathered wicker table sits in the corner and is a perfect place for a game of cards.

They work on jigsaw puzzles under the window with a view that looks out over the water.

The kitchen looks like a room from another era.

Phoebe did not want it torn apart to be remodeled and modernized. Her goal was for everything to remain much as it was.

The open shelves store everything from canned foods to plates and bowls.

Red, blue and white transferware is on display on the upper shelves.

Next to the old screened door straw hats and bags are hung casually on nails.

This guest bedroom is simplistic but warm and inviting with its twin bed and red dresser.

Shop Vintage Style Bed Frames

The white bed linens are interchangeable. Durable hooked wool and cotton rag rugs decorate the floors.

Phoebe didn’t want fussy window treatments. She chose simple rod pocket hemstitch curtains just like her mother used.

In the bathroom, industrial elements such as the deep-basin sink and subway tile shower were selected for their durability.

The floor is painted with marine paint.

Family members enjoy cocktails and conversation near the water just before sunset.
