A House That Is A Home

Some people want a big, fine house with all the bells and whistles, but I want a house that is a home.
Some people want a new car every four or five years. My car is 19 years old, but as long as it starts and gets me where I’m going, that’s good enough for me.
I’d rather have an old house and car and be debt-free. Knowing that I don’t owe anyone anything gives me peace of mind.
Little Things Make A House A Home:

What matters to me are the little things that make a house a home. A candle glowing in the growing shadows, a house plant with green leaves reaching toward the light.
I prefer an old house with character that is somewhat different from the other houses on the block, something that has been standing for decades. I prefer to live in a house that has been around so long that it’s seen more than I have.
This house needs the railings stained and the porch floor repaired, but this work doesn’t have to be done all at once. I might get it done next month or next year. A house that is a home always needs something done or restored.
Just because it isn’t a finished product doesn’t mean I love it any less. When is a home really finished and complete? It is constantly evolving.

I like color, substance, and texture. You might string beads for a necklace, or you might turn those beads into wind chimes that sing to you when the wind blows.
You could add those beads to the top of a plant’s soil to give it extra sparkle. Beads can also be attached to keychains, zipper pulls, and bags to personalize and decorate them.
Maybe you will make a friendship bracelet and gift it to your best friend.
Flowers In My Garden:

I’d rather have flowers in my garden than a wrapped bouquet from the store.
Store-bought flowers only last a few days, whereas those in your garden sway in the breeze for much longer. They wave to you in greeting as you walk by.
I’d rather have a cozy little kitchen full of color than one that looks straight from the pages of Architectural Digest. A house that looks like it has been lived in and loved appeals to me more.

My kitchen looks somewhat like a diner, full of red, white, and green. Old and vintage are blended with new and modern.
A house that is a home is a combination of things you’ve picked up over the years.
Pets & Chaos & Toilet Paper On The Floor:
I’d much rather have a house with furry pets. When you have pets, you sometimes have chaos.
But I wouldn’t trade these three sweet kitties for the world. They make this house a loving, lived-in home.
Simon has scratched the wall, and nail holes need to be filled. I will do this one day, but not today. It isn’t the highest priority on my list.

Daisy will look at Simon, and off they go, chasing each other all over the house. Ivy looks on like a slightly disapproving mother. She probably doesn’t remember being like these kittens, but I clearly remember that she was just as silly.
As I write this, Simon makes funny noises like a barking seal and dashes from room to room.
Occasionally, a dining room chair hits the floor while cats are playing. But I’m not alarmed or upset.
I don’t let it ruin my day if something gets toppled and knocked down. If a thread is pulled, a vase is broken, or a piece of furniture is knocked askew, it isn’t the end of the world. It’s just what kittens do when they’re young and energetic.
This house is full of life and laughter; nothing in life is perfect. Perfection isn’t what makes something beautiful.

A House That Is A Home Looks Lived In:
I have a home that is lived in, loved, cherished, and full of fun. A home isn’t always meant to be free of dust, dings, or dents.
I don’t want flashy jewelry or diamonds glittering on my fingers. I’d rather have shiny stones in a bowl or seashells in a vase.
I’d rather have polka-dots, stripes, and checkered cotton curtains than the finest silk or velvet.
I don’t need expensive toys and electronics, the latest this and that. If it works, why replace it?
I’ve learned that chasing the newest fad and the excitement of buying the latest trinket fades fast. But a house that is a home endures.
Below is a poem I like from the children’s book: The Alligator In The Closet.
Poem by David L Harrison from The Alligator in the Closet:
The cat has clawed the furniture
The dog has chewed the door
The baby colored on the wall
Chairs have scarred the floor.
The faucet in the shower leaks
The table's full of stains
The kitchen ceiling fills a pan
Every time it rains.
I guess it's not a perfect house
As anyone can see
But this is where my family is
So it's just right for me.

Brenda, I love this post. A house doesn’t;t need to be perfect to be home, it needs to offer comfort during the storms of life and bring joy all of the other days.
Have a wonderful weekend Brenda, enjoy your kitties.
this is something beautiful that I keep open so I can revisit it often. It’s about dogs, but the same can be said for cats and kittens.

I really loved today’s post, Brenda, and I agree with everything you said! And that picture of the kitties in the bedroom was really cute!
Much to be said for living in peace, safety and calmness…and old that still works is good enough I agree. We keep our cars a long time too. We don’t drive far from the apt anymore so it should last a long time. Your plants make the house look very inviting and comfy!!
Love seeing your new home and how much you and your fur babies are enjoying it. Your posts now are filled with peace and comfort and so glad to see that for you.
Absolutely, 100% yes! And your flowers are beautiful!
This is me to a “t”, Brenda. I don’t need anything fancy either. I love my small, welcoming, comfy home filled with collected treasures, books, plants, and the people I love. (Would be better if Clementine and Monkey were still here with us….)
I also don’t need a fancy car. As long as my vehicle is safe and gets me from point A to point B, that’s all I need. Being debt-free means more to me than making huge monthly payments on a fancy car that’s just depreciating day-by-day anyway.
Funny you should write about this topic today about home. I just caught up on reading the May entries from Simple Abundance. They’re all about home! Do you have this book?
I believe I used to have this book, but I don’t any longer. I wish your dear kitties were still with you!
Perfect! Everything.
I agree. My house is tidy but not perfect. It is filled with estate sale finds and generational treasures. One of my favorite items is a doll cupboard my grandfather made for my mom in 1932. It has been repainted many times, and the doll size china is down to six unbroken pieces because it was well loved by four generations of children. It stands in my kitchen with a child size mixing bowl and little basket of tiny rolling pins. I look at it every day and think of my mom and grandparents. Your home is beautiful.
I’m surprised you still have 6 unbroken pieces!
What a great post. I’m with you, I love my smaller house and its quaintness. It is just comfy and homey. And yes filled with the love of our two dogs and two
cats. Used to be four dogs and six cats but I’ve cut way back.
Love that picture of Ivy on the nightstand watching the kittens. Probably thinking to herself: I never acted like that!
I’m sure that’s what she’s thinking. But I remember all kinds of silly kitty things she did!
What a great post!I loved the poem. The same here!My house isn’t perfect and most of the time is messy and untide but I love it. Inside you will find my journey in life and all the beautiful memories I have as a single parent with my lovely 4yrs old son.We haven’t adopt a pet yet,but we will soon.Have a great evening. Thank you for this post.🤗🤗🤗
I think a pet or pets complete a home.
Happy Thursday Brenda,
I totally agree with you!
My home isn’t perfect. It’s sometimes messy and not perfect, but that’s ok. I have a sweet wee cocker spaniel that fills me with laughter and love. A family that sometimes fills my small living room totally up and this old house laughs with us!
It’s not about what we don’t have at all. It’s about all the wonderful things we do have!
Hope you have a great day!
Yes, it is about all we do have. I like that thought.
Brenda, Lovely way to celebrate your wonderful home. Your posts are so happy and full of love .. I just love your green door and the plants on either side of the steps. Your posts make my day……
Oh, I’m glad! I love to write to all of you friends.
