I ordered a wheelchair from a company called Kerdom. I’ve been researching wheelchairs for several years, knowing I might need one at some point. It arrived on Friday morning.

My neighbor Randy came over and got it out of the box because it was heavy. We discovered some doorways the wheelchair won’t go over.

For now, he got a piece of foam and taped it in the kitchen doorway, and the wheelchair will easily go over it. He plans to fashion a piece of wood to create an entrance that will be easier to maneuver.

I don’t plan to use a wheelchair all the time, because I don’t need to.

Kendra said that when their dad began to use his wheelchair, his muscles grew weak, and that seemed the beginning of the end.

I was just trying to be proactive so that it would be here for the really hard days. I mostly walk with a cane, and occasionally with the rollator/walker. The wheelchair is just another aid for when walking is too hard for me.

The girls came over and brought lunch yesterday, and were quite amused watching me practice with the electric wheelchair. I’ve never used a joystick before, so I’m clumsy with it.

They each got into it and went around the house like they knew exactly what to do, and had a bit of fun.

I had to find a way to disengage the built-in female voice that talks to you when you’re using the wheelchair. She tells you when there is a problem. I hate things talking to me, and noises in general.

The wheelchair comes with a plastic cup holder and a place to store your phone. But I’m not using it because it won’t go through the doorways with it attached. It also has lights and a horn. Various gears, etc.

I’m one of those people who never wants voices and noises when I’m driving my vehicle. I am glad to have a twenty-year-old car that doesn’t have all those bells and whistles.

It would really annoy me. I don’t even use the radio when driving.

The Flip House Has a Pending Sale:

Kendra sold the flip house right away. She took an offer below her asking price because they offered cash. The details are still being worked out.

This is the culmination of many months: 8 months of clearing out and working on the hoarder house. She’s ready to move on.

Now she’s working on her son Riley’s house. I believe they have the new siding on it. The new furnace is in, the plumbing is finished, and the electrical and structural work are done.

I don’t know when he’ll be able to move in. The house isn’t far from Kendra’s house, so I can see him stopping there for meals after work.

She is enjoying her new patio, and it’s often cold enough to use her outdoor fireplace while she and her boyfriend watch the college football games.

It was expensive, but it added more living space to her little house. I don’t have photos after she decorated the space. I’ll try to take some the next time I’m over there.

Marley went to her senior-year homecoming last night. Marley is on the far right. She will be 18 in December, and that same month, Riley will be 23.

The other pics are from the Texas/OU game that Marley, Riley, their dad, and his wife attended.

Simon & the TV:

A few nights ago, I had the TV on but muted while I lay in bed scrolling through news on my phone.

In the background, I noticed the TV flashing with light. What in the world, I thought. I looked up, and the channels were being changed very quickly.

I turned on my bedside lamp, and it was Simon at the end of the bed with the TV remote. How he managed to just change the channels, I don’t know.

That boy is the most mischievous cat!

This Week in Posts:

At the beginning of last week, I rounded up a lot of ideas for clever ways to use crocheted doilies. Then I wrote about the changing seasons and how they affect us. Lastly, I wrote about ordering the wheelchair, which arrived on Friday.

  1. Good Morning Brenda,
I am catching up on E-mails and just finished yours. A few years ago I took my 97 years old Mother shopping at IKEA. We bought an office chair that had wheels. It was narrow enough to pass through her doorways of her 70 yr. old home. She also owns two different wheelchairs that were donated by her deceased friends’ families as well as rollators of different sizes. She propels it forward by walking. The only room she can’t use it this way is her living room because it has wall to wall carpeting. She uses her walkers through this room. She has hardwoods under the carpeting. We have suggested the removal of the carpet. She refuses to give up that damn carpet because it represents luxury and warmth. It is in very good condition. The rest of her house, 3 bedrooms and a hallway are hardwoods. The two baths and laundry room are tile. She resists using the wheelchair except on occasions where we are doing extended walking and or might need to sit. So, we bring the wheelchair and the walker! We recently went to the San Diego Zoo. Mom walked quite a bit and used the wheelchair at the end of the day. She commented to us that even though she has some pain at the end of these trips and needs a day to rest, it is worth it. She attributes the decline and death to the over dependance of the wheelchair. Please listen to your girls. They saw firsthand the slow demise of their Dad. Please be careful.
