You may be wondering how to decorate with nature in mind, without plants scattered about. While I do have house plants on a baker’s rack in my office, my other plants are currently outdoors.

While greenery/plants is a classic choice, there are many other ways to create a fresh, calming, and nature-inspired atmosphere without live plants.

My Home & Inspiration from Nature:

In this post, I will be showing rooms in my house with either green or nature-inspired elements.

You can decorate with nature without plants by using green florals in curtains and green throw pillows.

If you want the look and feel of the outdoors inside your home, here are creative, nature-inspired decorating ideas that don’t require live greenery. However, I do have plants in the office on a bakery rack, away from the kitties.

1. Use Natural Materials in Your Decor

Incorporating wood, stone, rattan, and bamboo instantly connects your home to the outdoors. Think wooden coffee tables, woven baskets, stone accents, and wicker chairs. These materials bring warmth and texture to your home, mimicking the natural world.

My Take & Interpretation

Instead of wicker seating indoors (I have wicker chairs and a settee on the porch), I have earthy-colored furniture.

I think I’d like a green couch one day. I’ve been wanting one for ages, since I saw a friend’s green couch back in the eighties. But I always ended up playing it safe by going with neutrals. Now, green is generally considered neutral.

2. Decorate with Dried Botanicals

If you love the look of greenery but don’t want the maintenance, consider dried flowers, grasses, or branches as a perfect alternative.

Pampas grass, eucalyptus, and lavender bouquets can last for months, adding a soft, natural touch to your home. Alternatively, hang botanical artwork.

My Take & Interpretation:

If I had dried botanicals within the kitties’ reach, I’d have mere stems. So I’ll pass on that for now.

3. Add Nature-Inspired Artwork

Bring the outdoors in with landscape paintings, botanical prints, or photography of forests, mountains, or oceans. Artwork that reflects nature adds serenity and a focal point to your walls.

My Take & Interpretation:

That’s what I’ve been reflecting on and decorating with of late.

Florals in the Bedroom:

I recently found these floral prints half off at Hobby Lobby. They are just bursting with color, hanging above my dressers on either side of my bed.

4. Choose Earthy Colors and Textiles

Decorating with natural tones such as soft greens, warm browns, sandy beiges, and sky blues creates a grounding and peaceful environment. Pair these colors with cozy textiles like linen, wool, or cotton for a nature-inspired look.

My Take & Interpretation:

I have a wooden coffee table and always look for wicker baskets at thrift stores.

5. Display Found Objects from Nature

Seashells, driftwood, pinecones, or river stones make unique and meaningful decorations. Display them in bowls, glass jars, or on shelves to bring the outdoors inside in a personal and creative way.

My Take & Interpretation:

I enjoy decorating with glass jars and wooden bowls, and I also like to scatter small stones among other types of decor.

Bathroom With Green & White:

In my bathroom, I have a green shower curtain, as well as green and white striped curtains that I had hanging in the apartment.

6. Incorporate Natural Light

Maximizing natural light is one of the easiest ways to make a space feel connected to nature. Use sheer curtains, hang mirrors to reflect sunlight, and keep windows unobstructed to brighten your home naturally.

My Take & Interpretation:

With 18 windows in this old house, I have lots of natural light.

7. Use Scents Inspired by Nature

Candles, essential oils, or incense scented with lavender or fresh linen can transport you outdoors without ever leaving your living room. Scent is a powerful part of home atmosphere and helps create an interconnected, natural feel.

My Take & Interpretation:

I think I might have a lavender or fresh linen candle around here somewhere. My usual taste in candles is vanilla and cinnamon.

8. Choose Furniture with Organic Shapes

Instead of sharp, modern lines, look for furniture with curves and shapes that mimic the organic flow of nature. A rustic wooden bench or an arched mirror can soften your space and bring the outdoors in.

My Take & Interpretation:

Since my couch cushions now look fresh and clean, you can see that my couch is no longer covered. I do like curvy furniture and soft lines. Furniture with softened edges feels cozier and more relaxing.

Other Ways I Decorate with Nature in Mind:

I think my landscape paintings are appealing with their old dirt roads, mountains, and trees. The colors are soft with greens and brown tones.

I like using wicker baskets and wooden dough bowls as vessels in my house. Organization is more visually appealing when using wicker baskets to store things in.

Most of my area rugs were chosen in various shades of green. That is true in the living room, guest room, my bedroom, the dining room, and the bathroom.

You don’t have to have house plants to enjoy a nature-inspired home. By using natural materials, earthy colors, botanical artwork, and sunlight, you can create a warm, grounding environment that feels connected to the outdoors.

Decorating with nature is about more than greenery—it’s about bringing the calm and beauty of the natural world into your everyday life.

You haven’t shown your backyard yet have you? Or did I miss it on another post?

  2. Omg, my whole comment went away!!! 😡 Let me try again…
I think your clean couch covers look great! I laughed at your not using botanicals because they’d be stands with the kitties. I love all the pretty pictures and sheer curtains in your house. It’s so pretty and cozy looking. Also, what about using fake plants? Some of them are so life like, it’s hard to tell they’re not real! And my last point had to do with using scents. This could include essential oils, diffusers, candles, simmer pots, and even Lysol to disinfect fabric furniture. I tried to do some research on this. I have a dog and I know animals have a much sence of smell than we do, and I’ve heard some things are bad to use around them. But my research seemed to be conflicting results. Some said a product was ok, other websites said not. I was hoping maybe you could research this and get better results than I could find. I would appreciate and enjoy a post about what is safe to use around our pets.

    1. Please excuse my typos!!

    2. I’ll plan on doing that. Did you know that, if you hit CTRL and Z at the same time, your words will reappear?. It has to be the first thing you do on the keyboard though.

      1. I’m not responding from my desktop where I have a separate keyboard. I’m reading and responding from my cell phone and I don’t have a control button to push. It doesn’t always do it, but sometimes it does, and it’s usually when I’ve written a longer comment.

  3. Great ideas! I especially like the green pillows on your couch and the new floral prints in your bedroom.

  4. I really enjoyed this post . My plants are all on the first floor in the dining area , near the sliding doors . It’s nice and bright there. I’ve tried plants upstairs but I forget to water them . I love the ideas to bring nature in . I’m going to go back to using my spare room as a tv room. So that room could use a bit of a mini makeover. I will use lots of the ideas in there .

    1. Since I had just posted about biophilic home decor, I figured I’d better follow it up with decor without plants.

  5. Nice to see more of your home, Brenda. It is truly lovely!

    1. It was clean and I figured, just take pics of most of the house.

Any crafting going on in your office/ craft room?

    1. Not lately. Most of my time goes into this blog. You can’t just write a post and forget about it. Google “demotes” you if you don’t keep updating posts over and over again. Ridiculous, huh?

  7. You’ve created such a lovely home Brenda. Love it

  8. I swore I was going into the store to purchase a white cotton duck sofa and came out with the dark green colored sofa. Thank goodness for soft, velvety beige slipcovers. What was I thinking? Same thing with the quartz countertop, wanted light and chose a beautiful brown with gold flecks. I should only choose light and with the house having small windows can be too dreary in here. Everything else is light and airy. I do love my plants! I always tell my husband about all the benefits of plants!
If you stop and think of the cycle of plants and life it’s all well orchestrated!

    1. I knew the minute I saw this place that I wanted light, pure white countertops. And that is what I got. Sometimes when you’re on the fence about choosing something, it’s best to go with light.
