There are many ways to enjoy a perfect winter day, like taking a brisk walk to stretch your limbs and get some exercise. I spend most of my days indoors. The portable fireplace is usually turned on, sending out heat and warming my feet, while I enjoy the pretty faux flames.

The sun is shining brightly through the windows. Music is playing, with waves of harmonious strains filling the otherwise silent house.
My Birthday Dinner:
Kendra grilled burgers on Friday night, even though it was cold outside, and we ate inside. Attending were Kendra’s boyfriend, Scott, Kasi, Ross, Andrew, Marley, and Riley. The burgers were great, with all the good toppings. There was iced tea, baked beans, and potato salad, and afterwards, cupcakes.
Kasi and Ross told us about their lakehouse, which is out in the middle of nowhere, away from the city. Scott, Riley, Marley, and Andrew played a game at the dining table. Ross was tired and went home early.
I baked myself a birthday cake, and every day I enjoy a slice of sweet, chocolatey cake. After morning chores, I sit and stare at my newly arranged bookshelves. The organization is appealing and fresh, with decor dotted throughout.
The kitties are curled up asleep, the lamplight glows, and birds are flitting around in the bushes and trees outside.
Potato Soup in the Crockpot:
Yesterday I made a potato soup recipe I’d found on Pinterest, and it was quite delicious. It was possibly the best potato soup recipe I’ve ever made. I have quite a bit left over, and I told Kendra to come by and pick up a container of it.

The potato soup recipe was from the blog, Valentina’s Corner, and I urge you to try it. There was minimal preparation, and the result was excellent. It was creamy and delicious with chicken broth, onions, garlic, sour cream, shredded cheese, flour, and milk.
If you want to make a big meal, this is a cheap way to feed a family, as potatoes are the main ingredient. I added carrots too, because they were in the produce bin in my refrigerator.
I made a grilled cheese sandwich to go with it, and I enjoyed a hot bowl of soup on a cold day.
What is a Perfect Winter Day?
A perfect winter day feels like a pause, the day stopping and holding its breath while you enjoy it to the fullest. The sky is currently a crisp blue, with white clouds streaking across it.
When I go out to the porch to feed the outdoor kitties, the chill fully wakes me up. The cold air kisses my cheeks, and I notice that it smells so clean and fresh.
Then I step back inside after providing them with fresh water, and I’m wrapped in warmth again. I began the day with ordinary tasks, turning on the tree lights and seeing to what needs to be done. Breakfast is typically oatmeal with fresh blueberries and a piece of raisin toast.
Then I sit in this chair in the living room with a cup of coffee, enjoying the view. Today, the windows frame the stillness outdoors.
I follow a simple routine that molds my days. Simple things, setting things straight, cleaning a surface, and putting up dry dishes I’ve previously cleaned. Sometimes, wiping up an errant chocolate crumb from the chocolate cake that slipped past me earlier.

Pleasure in Simplicity:
There is pleasure in these simple tasks, a regularity that is pleasing and whole. The wind is moving the neighbor’s dangling light bulbs, ever so slightly. I see the sun out of the corner of my eye, and it winks at me off the surfaces it touches outdoors.
The Christmas tree lights on my little tabletop tree are a regular daily indulgence. The lights glow and twinkle throughout my day. Most days are just common days like any other, not much different from the day before.
In the afternoon, you’ll find me in the living room once again, having gotten a few household chores done throughout the morning.
It is this straightforward routine that brings me a sense of peace. I enjoy the shine of a pitcher on the bookshelf. And the bright light from the nearby window illuminates the brown bottles below.
Every day is much the same, pleasant, unremarkable, spent happily inside this old house. These walls have seen many faces pass through. Families settled in for a while before relocating elsewhere. They’ve come and gone.

I wonder what they enjoyed most about this house. Was it the wide front hallway, the back room filled with windows, the sturdy wood flooring? Maybe it was the many windows that framed the outdoors.
Silence & Stillness:
A perfect winter day isn’t necessarily about doing much at all. It’s about the sensations around me, choosing music that is sweet and harmonious. Otherwise, silence, a stillness in the air, settles like a soft blanket over everything.
Light filters in, as though softened by the cold, resting on the floor and stretching to the edges of furniture. It highlights the spines of books, the rim of a mug left on the table, and the nearby houseplants.
Nothing feels hurried. Even time itself seems to move more slowly, as if it, too, is resting. The house holds a collection of small, steady sounds. There is the faint hum of heat moving through vents and the occasional creak of settling wood.
Each sound feels large in the stillness, like ripples in a calm pond, noticed and then gone. Warmth gathers in pockets: a favorite chair, a blanket draped across the lap, the lingering heat of coffee cradled in my hands.

There is a sense of being held and shielded, protected from the sharpness of the cold beyond the walls. The contrast makes the indoors feel like a peaceful refuge, a place where little is demanded of you and pleasure is free.
Outside, the world may be bare or blanketed, but inside, life feels paused rather than empty. It is like a suspended moment. A chance to breathe more deeply and to notice the spaces between thoughts.
A winter day indoors allows you to rest in the stillness, and even the smallest comforts are appreciated and meaningful.

Happy Birthday Brenda!
You really need to write a book. While reading your blog today I almost felt like I was there in the room with you, observing the sights you were describing. It was almost magical! I love it when you write blogs like this one. Please don’t ever stop.
Glad to hear you had a nice birthday.
Potato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich sound perfect for a winter day.
Love the photos of your fur babies.
Happy Birthday, Brenda.
May you have many, many more.
Lovely post! It is nice to put to words such warm and cozy observations of your home. How wonderful to fully appreciate what we have and not rush through the season, blessed with what we need. Happy Birthday!
This was such a nice post today. It felt like I was there in your house with you, enjoying the coziness! You have such a gift with words. The potato soup sounds really good. I will have to try that. Your family is so sweet and kind to spoil you on your birthday. What did the girls think of the bookshelves they got you?
Happy Birthday Brenda, your birthday dinner sounds delicious. I’m sure it was very nice for you to have your family with you to celebrate. I’m going to make the potato soup this week. We’re in for more winter weather here in WV. They are predicting 15 inches of snow. We had a little taste of spring, the temperature was in the sixties on Friday which was unfortunately short lived.
Un très très bon anniversaire Brenda.
Merci pour ce texte réconfortant
Thank you, Emma!
Happy Belated Birthday Brenda,
it sounds like it was a wonderful day.
That potato soup sounds great. I sent it to myself and I’ll give that recipe a try. I love soup in the winter time.
It’s cold here today. Not even up to freezing. The skies are gray and the wind is howling. I’ve been in front of my gas fireplace enjoying that flame. It’s so peaceful and quiet. I’m a bit tired of Winter. The ice storm we had here in TN did me in! I’m so ready for the Spring to really arrive. Of course that won’t be until April sometime. The weather will tease is a few times in March but it’ll get cold again. I have daffodils blooming now and the freeze expected tonight will take some of them out. It always happens. Soon enough we’ll be talking about how terribly hot and humid it is! Humans are never really satisfied, are they?
I’ve noticed other spring plants and bushes emerging. It’s too early of course.
Happy Birthday!! The dinner sounded yummy and that soup as well!! Sitting even in front of a faux fire is still lovely…used to go sit at daughters house in front of hers. My parents had a little round radient heater…even that was comforting on those super cold days!!
I will make that soup again and again!
Just reading this brings me peace. I’m currently in bed struggling with a bit of bronchitis. One of my cats, Mittens, has anchored herself alongside me. I can’t move even if I wanted to! It’s cold outside, but in here, warm and cozy…just like it is with you!
I’ll try the potato soup! Thanks for the link!
Your cat is providing you with a live heating blanket. Feel better soon! None of my cats will get in my lap or sleep next to me.
Lovely prose. It’s much the same in our small, and very old house. Thank you!
Old houses have their very own unique story.
