This week on Sunday Snippets 8.24.25…

In September, I am having a dental bridge made for two back teeth on the right side that will replace crowns with holes in them. I’m not looking forward to that. But at least I don’t have to have a root canal.

I will pay $3200. And that’s with my 20% discount. I have more dental work that will need to be done soon. When it rains, it pours.

It is SO hot! It’s like walking outside and right into a heated oven. I didn’t feel much like going out all last week. So I haven’t done much.

Then, as the weekend stretched on, it became a bit cooler. I’m so thankful for that. My container plants have been practically roasting out there on the porch and in front of it.

Movies I’ve Watched This Week:

Boy Erased:

Boy Erased is a 2018 movie with Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, and Lucas Hedges. It tells the courageous story of Jared Eamons (Lucas Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town. He must overcome the fallout of being outed to his parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe).

His parents struggle with reconciling their love for their son with their beliefs. Fearing a loss of family, friends, and community, Jared is pressured into attending a conversion therapy program. While there, Jared comes into conflict with his leader (Joel Edgerton) and begins his journey to finding his own voice and accepting his true self.

Boy Erased is a take on parents who can’t accept their child’s homosexuality, and by trying to change him, risk losing him.

Abandoned & Things Heard & Seen:

Lately, I’ve been watching a few horror films. Both of these films were on Netflix.

First, I watched Abandoned, a 2022 horror film. Then the next day, I watched Things Heard & Seen with Amanda Seigfreid.

Netflix

Abandoned (2022) is a psychological horror film starring Emma Roberts. The film delves into the unsettling psychological unraveling of a woman suffering from postpartum depression while adjusting to life in a haunted rural home.

Things Heard & Seen:

Things Heard & Seen (2021) is another horror movie starring Amanda Seigfreid and James Norton. Set in 1980, Catherine and George Claire are a couple with a young daughter who move from the Upper West Side of Manhattan to the Hudson Valley. After moving to the old house, Catherine begins to suspect that their home harbours dark secrets.

Series I’m Watching:

I’m still watching City On A Hill with Kevin Bacon as a dodgy FBI agent. There are three seasons.

HBO

City On A Hill is about 1990s Boston and was produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. It is on HBO. The theme is crime and racism.

In early 1990s Boston, ADA, Decourcy Ward (Aldis Hodge), forms an unlikely alliance with a corrupt, venerated FBI veteran, Jackie Rohr (Kevin Bacon). Together, they take on a case that changes the city’s entire criminal justice system.

I’m well into the last season now. If you like the actor Kevin Bacon, then this is a show you might want to watch.

What I’m Reading:

Amazon

I’m reading The Innocent by David Baldacci, which was published in 2012.

It begins with a hit gone wrong. Will Robie is dispatched to eliminate a target unusually close to home in Washington, D.C. But something about this mission doesn’t seem right to Robie, and he does the unthinkableโ€”he refuses to pull the trigger. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and is on the run.

Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a fourteen-year-old runaway from a foster home. But she isn’t an ordinary runaway. Her parents were murdered, and her own life is in danger. Against his professional training, Robie rescues her and finds he can’t walk away. He needs to help her.

The more Robie learns about the girl, the more he’s convinced she is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that involves unimaginable levels of power.

Now, Robie may have to step out of the shadows to save this girl’s life…and perhaps his own.

  1. I wish you good luck with your dental issues. I am also dealing with those issues. I have two bridges on top. I had a root canal about 6 months ago and now that tooth has to be pulled. It was loose even then so money down the drain ๐Ÿ˜ž So now I am getting dental implants so that means 5 teeth will be pulled, counting the one already loose. I’m anxious for this to be over with!

  2. My comment is a little out of left field, but I’ve been following you for awhile and have read all about your move and setting up your new life.
I am a divorced, solo woman in my 60s. I recently retired after 30 years living in a big city in a condo. I’ve moved back to my small city to be near my siblings (also in their 60s). I am renting for now. I want to find a home that’s just mine with more space than I had in the big city….this area doesn’t have much attached housing – mostly small and large homes on big or large land lots….so I have started looking at small homes on small lots – hoping they will be manageable. I just don’t have any skills – at the condo, we had our own maintenance person. Do you hire out your lawn work? do you have referrals for plumbing, electric, etc whenever you might need help there too? Any advice is much appreciated.

  3. Good movie suggestions! I’m a David Baldacci fan, will check that book out.

  4. Do you have a dental school in your area? They do excellent work at a fraction of the cost. There are dentists on staff that oversee everything. My mom has needed thousands of dollars worth of dental work these past few years, including dentures for all her top teeth, and she has had all the work done at a dental school. The work takes longer, but she said it’s worth it for how much money it saves. Just something to think about.

  5. Double ouch on the dental work and the cost! Thatโ€™s insane! And you have more to look forward too! Iโ€™m so sorry! Itโ€™s been hot here too. Iโ€™m over this heat! Fall canโ€™t get here fast enough!

  6. Elizabeth says:

OH my, my empathy on the tooth work!! Something we dread more than anything these days too…hope yours goes well. Cost of everything has gone insane…you wonder HOW they think we on a set income can do it? We had blood drawn last week…it cost TWICE what it did 6 months ago…sigh…if money grew on trees, we would all be out picking!!

    1. I know. And I need more dental work after this is done.

  7. The Boy Erased sounds interesting! Homosexually has so much stigma! We need to get out from under the rock we live under. Same with mental illness.

    1. I agree with you wholeheartedly!

  8. Annette Tracy says:

We are having our first big heat wave. Iโ€™m having to deep water my trees to help them along! And of course my planters outside need extra help! Those movies sound interesting. Thanks for sharing.

    1. My container plants look pitiful.
