The easiest way to refresh your space with minimal effort is to change the removable elements on your furniture. I do this by switching quilts on my couch and pillow covers on my throw pillows.
That is certainly the cheapest way I’ve found to change the look of my home.

You can completely change the room by switching these things out. And it doesn’t cost a dime. Just go through what you have and begin experimenting.
How the Couch Looked Before
Below is how the couch looked a week ago. I had a different quilt layered across the back, and the pillow covers had a maroon floral pattern.

The Art of Layering:
The looks you can achieve with just a couple of quilts and a few changed pillow covers are endless!
Who can afford new furniture every time they want a new look? No one I know. This is my answer to that decorating conundrum.
Layering helps introduce a new color, texture, or style, and refreshes your space so easily.
Why You’ll Love Layering
- Using what you already have
- Layer as many items as you want
- Experimenting with colors and patterns
- Changing the look whenever you want
I like changing the room up with my simple layered ideas. If you don’t like it, switch it back to how it was. Or get another quilt and pillow covers to try out. Live with it a day or two and see how you like it.
This is by far the easiest and cheapest way to change the look in your home. By using what you have and experimenting with it.
How the Couch Looks Now

Last week I switched out the quilt and pillow covers yet again.
Not quite satisfied with having added the first quilt, I looked through the house and found this smaller and more colorful quilt.
Then I layered it over the first one. It had brighter colors to add to the more muted quilt below it. This brought even more bohemian style to the space.

A Simple Swap
I focused on changing the layers on the couch and the chair across from it. They don’t have to match. I just work with a look until I’m satisfied with how they coordinate.
It’s fun to explore all the different looks and styles by swapping and layering. Sometimes it’s like a breath of fresh air to switch things around. And by far the most economical!

Here is my living room with the couch side by side. I just changed the quilt and the pillow covers. Yet, the look is quite different.

I took the tan couch cover from the back of the chair and put it over the couch cushions.
To refresh the chair’s look, I found this yellow-gold quilt in another room and layered it over the chair’s back and cushion.
A Simple Swap: Refreshing Your Home with Quilts and Pillow Covers
There’s something satisfying about changing the look of a room without rearranging furniture or buying anything new.
Sometimes, all it takes is a simple switch to achieve what you want. Such as quilts laid over the back of a couch, or folded at the foot of the bed. And pillow covers you can slip on and off.
In a home, especially a small one, these subtle shifts matter. They let you respond to the seasons, your mood, or even just a need for something different.
Refreshing Your Space with Color & Texture
Below is a photo of the living room that I decorated with touches of blue last year. I added a blue quilt over the back of the couch and tucked a blue blanket around the cushions.
Then I brought in one of the blue chairs from the south-facing room. For the beige chair across from the couch, I added a small blue-and-white quilt to lay over the back and a denim blue pillow.

Refresh Your Home in Minutes with Quilts and Pillow Covers
Quilts are often the heart of a bedroom or living space. A heavier quilt in winter brings a sense of coziness, while a lighter one in spring or summer makes it feel softer and more relaxed.
Simply trading one quilt for another can change the entire tone, from snug and layered to airy and calm.
Pillow covers work the same way. A change in color or pattern can shift a room’s feeling from muted to cheerful.
You can use striped fabric, floral patterns, solids, or soft neutrals. And because they’re so easy to switch, you can experiment without commitment.
What makes this approach so appealing is its simplicity. There’s no need for a full redesign or a shopping trip. You’re working with what you already have, rediscovering pieces that are tucked away in a closet or folded in a linen cabinet.

You certainly have an eye for interior design especially color. Thanks for sharing,
You’re quite welcome!
Brenda, I really enjoyed seeing all of the different looks. I especially liked the picture of your beautiful cat on the mantel. 😊❤️
Your post brightened my day!
You never know where those kittens will show up.
