The Love Of Home Files #12
The Love Of Home Files #12: It’s winter and the leaves are still drifting and blowing in the wind. The tree branches are all but bare.
We need things to do inside out of the cold. So I hope I’ve provided you with some of those ideas today. Whether it be decorating, making a craft, or trying a new recipe.
“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”
– Lewis Carroll
Table Greenery:
When you sit down to eat during winter, a bit of greenery is very welcoming in the center of the table. Along with candles to light when dusk takes hold.
Ready to eat soups and stews and hot casseroles with warm bread. That is what winter means to me.
The color green, the hue of nature, is calling to us during the cold months. Whispering our names.
It is saying: I’ll be there soon. The ground will warm up for seeds to be planted. Just hold on for a few more months and I’ll be there, preparing to make my entrance.
Blooms Are Calling Your Name:
The blooms in the above photo, whether real or faux, speaks of springtime. Greenery is gathered around it as though keeping it warm and away from the winter winds.
Decorate With Vintage Finds:
Old crocks and corbels, tins, baskets, and books.
It is time to shop the house. Look in nooks and crannies for things to put out on the surfaces. Anything vintage or that speaks of the past. Another era.
DIY Votive Holders:
I bet one of the first things you think about when you think of winter is warmth.
Candles represent warmth. Spend an afternoon making these cute votive holders made from recycled jars.
Make A Winter Wreath:
This winter wreath is attractive and looks simple enough. You could place it on the front door to greet visitors or above the fireplace or wherever your heart desires.
DIY With Advertising Labels:
This blogger makes the cutest things out of finds she buys at the thrift store. I wish I had her vision. The jar above has packing tape transferred lettering.
This DIY makes the jar appear to be vintage.
Easy Chicken Enchiladas:
Oh, don’t you love the luscious scent of Mexican food? This casserole dish of chicken enchiladas is tempting me to make this recipe.
When my girls were living at home they just loved when I’d cook chicken enchiladas. There was seldom any left over because it was one of their favorites.
French Onion Soup:
How about trying this French onion soup recipe with a fresh crusty baguette from the market? The onions are coated in butter (the French way) and caramelized in a stock pot over medium heat.
Irish Coffee:
This classic Irish coffee is made with sweetened hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and soft whipped cream.
Maybe you will want to shop your home for winter themed decor after the holiday stuff is tucked away. Consider sitting down to make a craft. Or enjoy making one of the recipes above.
Just enjoy your home.
Happy Almost New Year Brenda,
I love all of these ideas! Especially the enchiladas, the wreath and the greens.
I hope that you are taking care of yourself my friend and that 2024 brings you many blessings and good health.
I have always loved the Lewis Carroll quote. The French Onion Soup recipe might be calling my name…
Happy New Year! May 2024 bring many blessings to you, Brenda.
The way I view snow has been forever altered after reading Lewis Carroll’s imaginings of it.
