Walking The Garden On The 4th Of July
Everything is blooming so beautifully right now.
Yesterday we had a storm shower, so I didn’t have the full watering chore that is typical this time of year in the garden.
I did, however, go out earlier to make sure the soil was moist where I planted the lobelia seeds the other day. I’m trying to see that the brown pot is watered at least once per day till germination.
Above is a container with rosemary and salvia with pink pentas accenting their various textured stems.
The garden is made up of scent and sight and texture and color. A garden is so many things. For me it is solace and delight.
I’m so happy that my efforts this summer are exceeding my expectations!
All the purples and pinks look so beautiful paired together. This is my first year to use purple with pink.
I’d paired these two colors because it’s the color palette Ron and Pat have used this year. I wanted the eye to sweep over our gardens with the sidewalk between and find the whole look of it cohesive.
Of course in my opinion every color in the rainbow looks stunning against a backdrop of green leaves.
The pink cone flowers look like little parasols ladies from another era held as they walked to town.
The “American Dream” Tickseed is sprouting tiny light pink flowers with yellow in the center. This is my first year to plant tickseed. I ordered it online.
Its many stems twist and twirl all around in a fanciful way.
The Vick’s succulent plant shares the same galvanized container. I’ve never planted this succulent before either.
The mixed pots are all quite full. This big blue pot has many shade plants that are doing well in this location, where they do get a bit of sun.
Trailing plants spill over the side of the pot.
The morning glory and moon flower vines are growing rapidly in their various pots.
My chartreuse green sweet potato vine didn’t do well at all this summer. Something began eating the leaves right after I brought it home from the nursery.
However, the purple sweet potato vine has filled and taken over the galvanized container above.
Herbs are mixed with flowers in the galvanized containers. There’s plenty of sun in this location to keep the herbs going.
I wonder how much bigger the newer hosta plants will look next year when they emerge in late springtime?
There are two hosta plants that I planted last year and they’ve grown quite a bit since then.
There are ivies and ferns and and cannas thriving in their pots with other plants surrounding them.
My Japanese maple is like a sentinel standing tall in my garden. It’s come through about 4 winters and the massive storm we had here in June.
It is my pride and joy.
Your garden is lovely. You’ve made a forlorn and drab area a bright and colorful dessert for the eyes. So glad you’re out and about again and enjoying the fruits of your labor.

So glad you are enjoying your garden so much Brenda! I love to walk around and look at my plants and watch them fill out.. I love it when the pots start getting filled in. My marigolds are getting eaten up by something.. not sure what.. some years they survive the bugs, but not this year I’m afraid. They add such a nice vibrant yellow to the garden. Just glad you are receiving the joy you have in past years with your scents, colors and textures. Happy 4th!

I can ‘see’ the smile in your words when you write about your garden and the enjoyment that it brings to you. I am so happy you have been able to get back to the thing that you love so much. Remember, slow and steady as you go!

Its all beautiful, Brenda…I am sure your color choices added to the neighbors plants is indeed fabulous!! I needed to mail a couple things, and being we travel about 15 minutes to another town as their Post Office is a good one, unlike the one here, we get to travel all that way through the countryside, seeing the plants, animals and a few people along the way. I told Hubby, it was a nice thing to do on the 4th!
Brenda!!! You have such a beautiful garden. I’m so glad you were able to “dig in the dirt” this year. I’d thoroughly enjoy walking your garden with you. I appreciate a beautiful garden but it’s not something I can do. My thumbs are very brown. LOL

Your garden is thriving. I’ve ventured out and planting more things this year but in pots. I don’t feel like I’m much of a gardener. I’ve never heard of ticketed. looks interesting.
I love your Japanese Maple. I’d like to buy one but seems as if there are many varieties so it’s confusing. Do you know which one you have?
No, I bought it some years ago and have long forgotten the name of it.
Happy 4th of July to everyone. Celebrating Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays (next to Christmas). Hopefully it will cool down a bit from the extreme heat and humidity that is our new normal where I live during the summer, along with what seems endless drought. Usually about 6 p.m. the sun sinks low enough in the west and my backyard gets shady again, so I can sit in my screened Shezebo this evening without roasting. The fireflies have come out – late this year, usually they show up around the middle of June. Your garden is beautiful, Brenda. I love purple and pink flowers together, I have those colors scattered around my garden beds. What is even more lovely is that many of your neighbors can enjoy your gardening skills and beautiful plantings now because your garden is open for lots of them to see.

Everything is so pretty! Pink and white are my favorite colors in a garden accented by a lot of greens. You may be a pink girl from now on:-) Your Japanese Maple is a stunner! You can never go wrong with them no matter what type of yard or garden that you have. I had a beautiful one in my yard in NJ that I cherished too. I am so glad the garden is rewarding your hard work and bringing you so much joy. I knowyour neighbors are enjoying it too! Happy 4th of July!
