I have thought of all sorts of cozy indoor ideas for the winter months ahead. Make the most of this time to do things you’ve always wanted to do, or take care of indoor activities you need to attend to.

Cozy indoor ideas for winter months are all about slowing down, finding warmth, and creating comfort on cold, dark days.
1. Start a new craft or sewing project
How long has it been since you’ve sewn something? Maybe make something easy, like fabric napkins or tea towels for your kitchen. Straight lines are always easy.

2. Learn a new skill
- Learn to knit or crochet
- Make DIY candles or soap
- Learn a new language
- Take an online course
3. Care for houseplants
Indoor houseplants always need a little tending to during the winter months. Maybe they need the dust removed from the leaves, or a little snipping here and there for healthy maintenance.

I can lose myself in small tasks like this, and my mind just empties of worries. Afterwards, my houseplants look so lovely and lush that I’m glad I took the time.
Basic winter houseplant care
- Clean your windows for better light
- Check for pests
- Clean leaves
- Boost humidity levels
- Cut back on fertilizer
4. Declutter your closet
It always feels good to declutter a closet, afterwards anyway. There’s always something I want to take to the thrift store that I no longer need or wear.
I often find things in the depths of the closet I forgot I even had, and it’s almost like getting something brand new!

- Empty and clean the closet
- Sort things to keep, to sell, and to donate
- Organize kept items by type
You’ll see things much more easily once you’ve got your things organized. A place for everything, and everything in its place; that’s the motto!
5. Do a digital declutter
While you’re at it, do a digital declutter. Go through and deal with all your emails. Sort through online photos and discard those that aren’t important to you.
Take the time to organize files. Unsubscribe from emails you’re no longer interested in receiving. Go through apps and see if there are some you no longer use.
Get a password book and make sure your passwords are all up to date. If you haven’t opened an email or an app in three months, I think it’s safe to say that you no longer need it.
6. Play music and dance
Choose your favorite music and dance around the room. You’ll get exercise and stretch your body. And you’ll also be losing yourself in something carefree and fun that takes little effort.

Remember, dance like no one is watching!
7. Practice self-care
Have a spa day and make your whole body feel rejuvenated. Light a candle and enjoy the scent—long baths, skincare rituals, stretching, meditation, or simply resting without guilt.
Give yourself a pedicure or paint your nails. It’s almost a mindless task, and you’ll look extra pretty. Relaxation is the theme to keep in mind.
Most important self-care for winter health
- Stay active
- Prioritize sleep
- Eat nourishing food
8. Bake or cook something comforting
Fill your home with warmth by baking something that fills the house with a warm aroma, like cookies, cinnamon rolls, or fresh bread. Winter cooking is as much about the scent as the taste.
Nothing smells more tantalizing than cookies baking in the oven. It fills your whole house with a sense of coziness.

It is bliss being in my kitchen when something smells magnificent baking in the oven. While it’s baking, I sometimes treat myself to a nice cup of coffee.
9. Sit and watch the birds
I enjoy watching the birds’ antics outside. There’s usually a squirrel or two to add to the mix. Sit in a comfortable chair and see how many birds you can identify.

Staring out the window takes your mind off things, and nature is always calming. Read by the window as snow falls outside.
Sometimes, just sitting and doing nothing is an instant mental reset.
10. Mix up a simmer pot:
A simmering pot of good scents on the stove always fills your home with a wonderful aroma. Simmer pots are a great, natural way to use leftover fruit peels, cores, and herbs, making them a sustainable home fragrance option.

Popular Simmer Pot Combinations
Here are some popular combinations, many of which can be adapted to a slow cooker set on low:
- Classic Fall/Winter: Combine apple slices, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves with water. You can add optional elements like a dash of nutmeg or sprigs of rosemary for an extra layer of aroma.
- Holiday Cheer: Mix fresh cranberries, sliced orange, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and allspice berries. Adding a sprig of fresh pine or rosemary can create a festive, evergreen scent.
- Refreshing Citrus: Use lemon slices, rosemary sprigs, vanilla extract, and star anise for a light, invigorating scent.
- Chai Spice: Simmer cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and slices of fresh ginger root.
- Eucalyptus & Ginger: A simple, clean scent can be achieved with eucalyptus branches, ginger, and lemon.
- Coffee Shop: For a unique aroma, combine a 1/4 cup of coffee beans with vanilla extract and a cinnamon stick
11. Dust and rearrange bookshelves:
I always feel better after I’ve wiped the dust off bookshelves. Then I play around with what I want to add back to them. Sometimes I change out decor.

12. Create a cozy nook
Create a cozy nook with pillows and fairy lights to make the winter months feel magical instead of dreary.
Layer blankets, light a candle, and settle in with a good book, poetry, or a favorite magazine. Let the stillness of winter be part of the experience.
You could also create a book nook in your home. Comfortable seating with a nearby table is about all you need. Bookshelves or a book cart can hold your treasured books, and you’ll have a place to sit while deciding what book to read next.
Winter is a natural invitation to slow down and turn inward. Here are a few other cozy indoor ideas for cold winter months.
- Start a creative project — Knit, paint, journal, scrapbook, or work on a small DIY. Winter is perfect for projects that don’t rush you.
- Watch movies or revisit old favorites — Choose films that feel comforting or nostalgic, especially ones that match the season’s mood.
- Play games or do puzzles — Board games, card games, or a puzzle spread out on the table can turn long evenings into something special.
- Reflect and write — Journal about the year behind you or dreams ahead. Winter is a thoughtful season that encourages reflection.
Soft music, fairy lights, and candles can make even an ordinary day feel special. Being indoors during winter doesn’t have to feel confining. It can be a chance to nurture yourself and your home.

Hi Brenda
Wish I could do these but had shoulder replacement surgery last week. Activities are limited right now. Love all these ideas though. Hopefully before winter is over I can try.
So many great ideas Brenda! Have a wonderful New Year.
I love to putter in the house any time of the year! Life is different for me being retired, everyday is Saturday. I don’t have to work and I don’t have to go to work tomorrow. I found 6 cotton placements and 6 cotton napkins at Aldi that I made into pillow covers. I wish I was a better seamstress but, it is what it is and I am enjoying them. Have a good weekend everyone!
Every day is Saturday for me too!
