Yesterday I ended up bringing more patio plants home. My daughters were with me to do the lifting.
First, Kasi brought lunch from Red Lobster here to my apartment, and she and Kendra, and I ate lunch. Kasi and I had the entree we always have and Kendra ordered something else.
I always enjoy having my girls over.
Under The Sun Nursery:
Then we went to Under The Sun garden nursery to look for flowers and plants.
I came home with four big plants. Aside from herbs I planted in my herb pot, I’ve been purchasing large plants I don’t have to do anything with once I bring them home.
Sometimes I buy hanging plants and then remove the plastic hanger.
I’m just not in the best shape to lift bags of potting soil. So I’m taking the easy way out this year.
Last year I would probably have never done this. But last year I wasn’t having so many problems with my ankle.
This sweet potato vine plant came home with me. I’m lucky I had the girls along to take the plants I chose up to the cashier.
Then Kendra brought me home, as Kasi had a scheduled massage, and she brought my plants to my patio.
Bringing More Patio Plants Home:
You couldn’t see it in the first photo, but this plant also has purple sweet potato vine mixed in.
Beyond that is what I think is a red impatiens. I’ve never had a shade garden. And I’ve never purchased impatiens before, so I don’t know much about them.
This is a plant one of the employees brought to my attention because she knew I was looking at plants for shade.
Next to that plant is the biggest plant I got. Actually, the girls bought that one for me for Mother’s Day, which we’re having to celebrate late this year.
That plant was $69.99, more than I could ever imagine I’d spend on a container plant. I can’t even lift that thing.
But it’s beautiful. And I believe I can take it inside come fall and winter.
For some reason, the photos I took of this purple and white petunia plant did not come out to my expectations. So I’m showing you a photo of the blooms it has on it. I’ll get a larger photo later to show you the entire plant.
I know I don’t have much sun, but I just love petunias. Especially purple ones. Not to mention purple and white polka-dotted petunias!
So that was yesterday with my girls.
Kendra’s House:
I’ll soon go over and photograph Kendra’s house. They’ve finished renovating the outside, which is completely different from what it originally looked like.
Kendra had her main carpenter design and build wood furniture for her front porch.
She’s had to take it slower decorating the inside of her new home. Her work is tugging her in different directions, and it’s taking her a while to find time to get settled inside.
Yesterday they were pouring a wider driveway at her place. This neighborhood frowns on cars parked in the street. You can only park on one side. So a bigger driveway will help her son and other visitors not have to park in the street.
She now lives within a few blocks from the Gathering Place.
Tulsa’s Gathering Place:
If you’ve never heard of Gathering Place, it’s Tulsa’s riverfront park.
I took this straight from their website:
Gathering Place is a 66.5-acre park along the Arkansas River in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Created by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, Gathering Place is a natural space with programming designed to provide inclusive and engaging experiences for all Tulsans to come together to explore, learn, and play.
Gathering Place also has restaurants, so Kendra and her son and daughter sometimes walk over there to eat.
The restaurants are Vista At The Boathouse, The Patio, and Redbud Cafe.
I haven’t been to visit this place, but my daughters and their families go to the Gathering Place and enjoy its amenities fairly often.
Sounds like a lovely day spent with your daughters. The plants are beautiful. I agree with the others who say the red flowers are begonias. They are wonderful in shade. Mine bloom into October (here in NJ). The Gathering Place sounds like a great area!
Your plants look terrific! You will enjoy the impatiens you bought. I get these every year for the front of my house which gets little sun. They never disappoint!
I visited The Gathering Place last November when I was home for the annual Bedlam football game. My family loved it! We walked along the river and went through various facilities there. What a treasure for Tulsa. You need to visit it soon!
My daughter came over after Mother’s Day too bc she had to work.
Flowers bring happiness to everyone I know! I use to work with this woman for yrs and she was crabby all the time! Then she worked at this flower place with me and she was happy all the time, like night and day! Lol
Sounds like a very nice day with your daughters!!! Glad you had it…for me, tis not the day that matters either…we try to celebrate someway whenever we are together!!
Brenda I have always had good luck with Spider Plants (your Mother’s Day gift from your daughters). I like to start new babies from the off shoots from the mature plants (I would suggest you allow the ones your plant is producing to get a little bigger before trying to root them). Here in South Texas they do equally well in shade or partial sun and unless we have winter temps below freezing I don’t have to bring them inside but expect you will have to do so where you are. Hope yours does well and you have happy memories about how it came to live in your garden.
It looks like mommy squirrel is smiling at you, she sure looks sleek and healthy with a nice bushy tail. Those purple and white spotted petunias are head-turners, I’ve never seen anything like them before. Do you have any space left on your patio, holy cow!
Please get help to move the pots around if you want to rearrange things. The last thing you want to do is injure your ankle worse or pull something and have more pain. This coming Friday is my day for flower shopping, I have a long list but I don’t think I’ll get everything – budget and space in my friend’s car will determine things as she’ll be shopping for her garden too.
Glad you had a nice afternoon with your daughters. I see you have a beautiful spider plant. Don’t forget you can plant the babies in soil or put them in water to root or live. The direct hot summer sun isn’t good for them. I just finished planting a container tomato and lots of herbs, an orange star and cannas.
So glad things are going better for you..impatients are great..you would enjoy the double impatients because they look like roses.. my daughter gets me beautiful begonias for mothers day every year…they come in beautiful colors..you go ahead and get those petunias ..they do fine here. I have my flowers all planted and now I can sit here on my porch and enjoy them and the birds..and once again life is good..bless you💕🦋🌸
I think I’ve seen those double impatiens like you mentioned at the nursery. I’ll have to look for those.
Sounds like a wonderful day with your girls – and how soul satisfying to visit the gardent center! Red Lobster – yum! It’s been a long time for me.
A question if you don’t mind – wasn’t Kendra to have some surgery this month? I recall you mentioning it awhile ago.
Pets to Ivy, and enjoy those beautiful plants!
Mary
Yes, she has an outpatient surgery scheduled for Wednesday.
Wonderful day with your daughters! I can imagine how much fun you had shopping for the beautiful plants.
Enjoy your Sunday – take time to sit on your patio and enjoy your beauties!
We didn’t have a lot of time. Kendra had to go show houses and Kasi had a massage scheduled. But what time we had was fun.
Brenda, the patio looks so wonderful! I believe the plant with the red flowers is a begonia. I had one last year that tried so hard to live in the house over the winter, poor little thing just kept blooming in the back bedroom with the closed door but I totally forgot about watering it and it finally died to the point I threw it away. Not sure I’ll get another one this year because the few hours of full sun it got on the front porch were not so good for it. Mine was a double bloom that made for a rosette type flower and it should have had a more mindful keeper.
I don’t know much about shade plants.
I agree with Teri and Amy that it is a begonia as I have them in large potted plants I get at Costco for my patio which is shaded with trees. They seem to thrive in the shade for me so I make sure I find colorful ones and there are plenty of colors to chose from. Some begonias have “waxier” looking leaves than others.
Sounds like a lovely day with your daughters.
Based on the shape of the leaves, I believe the red-flowered plant is a type of begonia, and there are many different types of begonias. Begonias should do well on your shaded patio.
Enjoy the remainder of the weekend.
Thanks for telling me. I don’t think I even asked what it was. The employee was looking for shade plants for me and she walked up to me with that one. It was red and you can imagine that I was sold with the color alone!
Beautiful plants Brenda! I love the polka dotted petunias too! I’m glad u had a great belated Mother’s Day with your girls!
I didn’t mind having to put it off a week. I just wanted to see both of them together so we could catch up and have a meal together. Getting to go to the small nursery was a plus of course!
