There are lots of budget-friendly DIY holiday decorations you can create at Christmastime.

Don’t feel compelled to drag out the box that holds the Christmas tree if you really don’t want to go to the trouble. I imagine for most of you, the box with that tree in it has been sitting in a garage, shed, basement, or attic since last Christmas.

Don’t feel like you have to head to the tree farm to choose a real tree if you’d rather decorate more simply. You can create these budget-friendly DIY holiday decorations to dot around your home for Christmas instead.

Maybe you want to decorate for Christmas, but you live in a small home and don’t have room for a tree. That’s where small space holiday settings and vignettes can save the day.

If you’re young and still have the energy and enthusiasm, go for it. But if you’re getting older, like me, a full-sized tree might be more than you want to deal with. And if I bring out a tree for the holiday, it will be a tabletop tree. I have three cats that would probably have a real good time tearing into it.

Christmas in Terracotta Pots:

Crafting for Christmas with terra-cotta pots brings a charming, rustic warmth to your holiday dรฉcor. These humble, clay vessels become the perfect blank canvasโ€”easy to paint, stack, and embellish.

They offer that cozy, handmade feel that pairs beautifully with twinkling lights, evergreen sprigs, and all the nostalgic touches of the season.

There are so many ways to utilize terracotta pots in holiday decor. Below is a setting with greenery and berries in pots encircling taper candles. The second photo shows the pot turned upside down and taper candles placed in the hole at the bottom.

The terracotta pot below features a large pinecone sprinkled with faux snow, a homespun look that can be accomplished easily. Just take a walk around the neighborhood or a park and pick up pinecones.

The photo below has small beige/white bottlebrush trees in beige/white terracotta pots. It’s a very vintage look. The pots are lined up like soldiers.

The second photo is another simple look, featuring small trees in pots and pinecones in terracotta pots. All these ideas are easy to craft and could be done in an hour or less.

Stacked Terracotta Pots:

Below, terracotta pots have been painted and adorned with red, white, or gold paint. Small wooden stars have been painted and glued to the top of the pot. If I had to guess, I’d say the glue that was used is either e6000 with a precision tip or a hot glue gun.

Stacking terracotta pots is an excellent way to build something that resembles a tree, whether you decorate them or not. The natural terracotta finish adds a vintage touch to your decor.

Hanging Holiday Decor:

A muffin tin can be spray-painted and decorated with Christmas littles, like the gingerbread man cookie cutter, greenery, and red berries. A piece of torn gingham fabric is tied around the muffin tin.

This red wooden chair is decorated with greenery, bows, and cookie cutters. Vintage cookie cutters are a perfect accent for Christmas decorating. I like to use them in some way every year.

Tabletop Holiday Decor:

Below is a tabletop vignette featuring white pitchers on a dresser, with a wooden tray in the background. The smaller creamers have bottle brush trees in them.

And last is this coffee can full of all kinds of Christmas miniatures. The vintage can has been placed on a cotton doily for effect.

Crafting Your Own Christmas Decor:

Crafting your own Christmas dรฉcor brings a form of individuality that store-bought decorations canโ€™t match. Itโ€™s the feeling of creating something with your own hands, a blend of imagination and nostalgia that makes your home feel special.

Thereโ€™s fun in the process itself: gathering supplies, spreading them across the table, turning up the Christmas music, and letting creativity take the lead.

You can play with textures like felt, pinecones, ribbons, and glitter, discovering new ideas as you go. It can become a cozy ritual while sipping hot cocoa, chatting with family, or enjoying a quiet moment alone.

Homemade Christmas Decor:

A homemade ornament or decor can carry memories of the year it was crafted. Every wreath or tabletop display becomes a unique reflection of your personality and style.

Itโ€™s a chance to create dรฉcor that perfectly suits your home, whether thatโ€™s rustic, whimsical, or vintage-inspired. Place these creations around your house: on the mantel, in the windows, or hanging from the tree.

Crafting Christmas dรฉcor isnโ€™t just about decorating; itโ€™s about celebrating the season with a bit of holiday magic sprinkled in along the way.

  6. What a timely post! So many great ideas and I hope to incorporate many of these in my Christmas decorating. I remember when Mom and dad would set up a Christmas village using magnolia leaves, pine cones, acorns, cedar branches, and dad would make the wooden village pieces. It seemed magical. This post carried me back to Christmas when it was not so commercial and what beautiful memories from those days.

Waiting at Canadian Tire for winter tires and the guy said two hour delay. Perfect. Sat in the truck with the heater blasting and loaded OLG Casino on my phone. Government regulated, everything in proper Canadian dollars, no funny business. Hit a nice progressive on a hockey themed game right when they texted โ€œyour vehicle is readyโ€. Walked out with new tires basically paid for plus 280 profit. Told the cashier the government gave me a rebate. He actually believed me.

I generated several characters โ€” fantasy, anime, even “civilian” ones โ€” and started talking to them, coming up with dialogues, portraits and stories. It’s like writing a script, but with a live interlocutor who responds. For me, it’s a real incubator of ideas that inspires and helps develop imagination in practice.

  11. I still want to set up a big tree. I just love sitting in the dark, staring at the pretty lights and all of the sparkly ornaments on it. That being said, I am getting lazy, and Iโ€™m not sure I have it in me to pull everything out and decorate the whole house.

    1. I want it too, just don’t know if it’s worth it.

  12. Such pretty ideas. I love using greens from the yard. I am on a gingerbread theme and am adding iridescent sparkles to the wooden ornaments I ordered. Fingers crossed they turn out ok! Waiting to see your holiday decorations. Have a good day everyone!

    1. Sounds like it will be very pretty!

These are all such great and cute ideas. I had a friend who had moved to a new house after a divorce, got a wild puppy that ate everything so she strung faux greens over her windows and hung the treasured ornaments on that. It was really cute. No ornaments were harmed! I love bottlebrush trees and you can buy some pretty cheap
    now a days.

    1. That’s a great idea your friend had! Might have to do that with these two crazy kittens.

  14. I absolutely love the simplicity of the greenery in the pots in the windows! I’d much prefer to decorate with decor rather than a tree. The tree is so intrusive and I prefer small things around the house. Plus if you have a living and dining and family room, it’s just a tree that sits in another room. I love natural though and that window was lovely.
