Some people are reluctant to use red in their homes. But you can add small bits of red decor as you first wade into using bright colors.

I’ve learned something about myself over the years. I must have the color red in my kitchen. In the past, I have removed all red decor, etc.

But then I realized I missed it and started putting it back. It just makes the room feel cozier and cheerier.

I don’t need a lot of red in my home. My kitchen has the most red in it. But I like it sprinkled throughout my home. Like finding an Easter egg among long swaths of green grass. A surprise feature.

Using small amounts doesn’t overwhelm a room. Instead, it adds something special.

The Unexpected Red Theory:

There is actually a theory called the unexpected red theory, coined by designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon on TikTok. It is the theory that a room never fully looks complete until a hint of red is injected.

Red has had its moment in the fashion spotlight for many seasons. With designers predicting its rise in interiors for 2026 as well, it’s time to welcome the trend home.

Red is a passionate, spirited color. There is an energy to the color red. It’s bold and stimulates the senses. But it is a color sometimes shied away from in decor because of its intensity.

In how to use red in your home can be one featured piece, or more scattered around it in small doses.

The unexpected red theory suggests adding this unconventional pop of color to a room where it wouldn’t necessarily match. In effect, it provides a dose of dopamine, enhancing the overall interior space.

How to Use Red in Your Home:

  • Application: It involves adding a “pop” of red, such as using a red vase, placing a chair, or hanging art, even if red isn’t in the original palette.
  • Why It Works: Red acts as a vibrant focal point, adding energy, drama, and a curated feel to a room, often contrasting with neutral tones.
  • Not Just Paint: It doesn’t require high expense; it can be small, easily replaceable accessories.

Red isn’t many people’s preferred aesthetic, but a subtle hint here and there may actually transform your space completely. It focuses on enhancing, not overriding, existing decor.

Pottery Barn Throw Pillows:

Pottery Barn uses red as a classic, versatile accent color that adds warmth, drama, and a “pop” to spaces. It is often paired with neutrals or rich browns.

Red is prominently featured in their Americana shop, often paired with white and blue in pillows and tableware.

The Psychology of Red in Interior Design

The color red is associated with strong emotions and acts as a stimulant. Here’s how red influences different aspects of our experience:

  • Energy and Stimulation: Red is known to increase heart rate and blood pressure, making it an energizing color that stimulates conversation and activity. It can trigger excitement or anger by stimulating the adrenal glands.
  • Passion and Romance: Deep reds like crimson and burgundy evoke feelings of love and intimacy, making them ideal for romantic settings.
  • Appetite Enhancement: Red is often used in dining spaces because it enhances appetite and encourages sociability. This is why many restaurants incorporate red in their branding and interiors.
  • Boldness and Confidence: Red is associated with strength and assertiveness, making it a great color for creating focal points in a room.

Colors that Make Red Look More Luxurious

Cream and white serve as neutral canvases that let red pop, creating a crisp, clean aesthetic that feels both classic and modern.

White provides a sharp, high-contrast look that enhances red’s vibrancy, while cream offers a softer, warmer contrast for a more subdued, elegant feel.

More Red in My Home:

I didn’t paint this cupboard; it was already that color when I thrifted it. The clear knobs tone it down a bit and give it a touch of elegance.

I found the small red bowl with an etched rooster at Tuesday Morning, and immediately scooped it up! It can be used to feature a white creamer, as I used it here. It is also a good place to store matches or keys.

Here I used it to hold vintage photographs. The distressed black bulletin board in the background also has a hint of red.

  1. I love red. My house is decorated with blue, red and cream. My favorite piece is an old wooden stand that I painted red and use as a plant stand. Oh, and a piece that is above a door that my mom found when they moved to Florida where it was in the trash that the previous owners left.

Your home is lovely and looks so cozy.
