Christmas Candlelight In The Dining Room
Sometimes things just look better in the glow of candlelight.
In dimness and candlelight, objects undulate in the air in front of you. As though the hot sun makes ripples in the air and swims before your eyes.
Above is the little green transfer ware creamer I mentioned in another post.
Usually I have it in the open shelves of the kitchen cabinets. But I brought it out to hold tapered candles.
I scattered candles here and there across the table for a casual look.
The red votives’ were lit in the vintage muffin tin, but they kept kept going out. The candles are old and the wicks covered in wax.
I gave up lighting them and just photographed the table as is.
The painting of the bowl of oranges in the kitchen looks so pretty when photographed from the dining room. I hung it there so I could see a portion of it from the living room.
There is something ethereal about that painting. Somehow it seems to look better in the dimmer light of day.
Tapered Candles In A Vessel:
If you haven’t tried lighting a few tapered candles in a vessel, it creates a sort of last minute and unexpected ambiance.
Just make sure when you light them that they’re pushed far enough down into the vessel so they don’t fall out once they’ve been lit.
I love the raised pattern of the green salad plates. It’s one of the main reasons I chose this set of dinnerware.
I was just in love with the exquisite pattern and the scalloped edges on the smaller salad plates.
The candles have a peppermint, coffee, and vanilla scent to them. The smells are a pleasant combination.
I added hard plastic candy canes to a juice glass and placed it on the cutting board. Usually the green salt and pepper shakers are kept here, so I just added Christmas decor to them.
Did you notice my sweet little ceramic birds? They look like they’re singing.
The birds will carry over into winter decor. I have other winter birds to bring out after the holidays.
When I Think Of Christmas:
When I think of Christmas, I think of lights sparkling, candles glowing, and cozy surroundings.
Pine and balsam fir. Cinnamon and cloves. Peppermint and gingerbread.
These scents of the Christmas season mingling together in the air. Sugar cookies and gingerbread men baking in the oven.
A garland of dried oranges and apples dangling down, teasing the cat.
Neighbors who may not see one another for months exchanging baked goods. Family traveling across the land. Jingle bells playing.
And a big round Santa ho-ho-hoeing like a broken record.
I’ve been purchasing battery operated timer candles in all different sizes. They come on at 5 pm and go off at 11 pm. I even got some that are outdoor weather resistant and have put them in lanterns in my garden. Safer for me since I live in a forest.

The one who has your red polka dot plates!
I like the idea of tapers in some kind of pretty vessel. They’d look pretty even unlit!
I LOVE the votives in the muffin tin. What a great idea. I think I might have an old one hanging around and I think I’ll pull it out. Have a great day and Thanks You for sharing.
Brenda, everything looks so beautiful and welcoming. I love all of your Christmas touches and hope that they bring you as much joy as they do us. Have a wonderful week.
Any container with candle wax in it or wax from wax melts can be put in the freezer…after awhile the wax will pop right out…works great.
I love that you mentioned the scent of cloves mixed with the other fragrances. I find cloves to be so warm and I can’t seem to find a good candle that features it. Yankee Candle used to have a jar candle named Home Sweet Home that smelled strongly of clove. I wish they still made it. Your home looks lovely and so welcoming, I look forward to each post.
Try carving down the wax on the votive candles to slightly slope down away from the wick and see if that works to keep them lit. I’ve done it successfully with my candles and greatly extended their useful life that way. Candle light is so beautiful. This is the only time of year I generally use real candles to provide the soft flickering ambiance in the living room where my Christmas tree and the fireplace are. I like the idea of putting a “bouquet” of candles in a pretty container but you may have to work to clean out melted wax inside the pretty transfer ware container. I think with the vignettes you’ve created around your apartment for Christmas you’ve decorated more than if you had put up a table top tree and added decorations to it!
Your table looks so inviting! Can we all come over for some cookies and Cocoa? 😀
Lovely table and message Brenda. Wishing you and yours a joyous holiday season and a New Year filled with peace and good health.
Brenda, I enjoyed your decor especially the quilts!
Love the candles hanging out in the creamer. You definitely have a great eye for decor and presentation. Best wishes for a happy Christmas from Canada.
Brenda, what a sweet Christmas table!..Your whole home is lovely. I never thought of putting tapers in a round container, it’s different, I love it…..
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, Ivy, and your wonderful neighbors.
