Enjoying small niceties at home includes all the small gifts you give yourself. It doesn’t need to be expensive or cost anything. It’s the feeling that comes with being kind to yourself.
Do this regularly and live your life to the fullest. The person you should be nicest to is yourself. It’s part of self-care.

A bouquet of flowers could make your day feel special. Treat yourself.
“I must have flowers, always, and always.” ― Claude Monet
Here’s a roundup of small niceties at home that make an ordinary day feel special.
1. A Morning Ritual That’s Just for You
Whether grinding fresh coffee beans or lighting a candle while you stretch, having a mindful morning routine can start your day off right. Try waking up just 15 minutes earlier to ease into your day with peace instead of pressure.
2. Upgrading Everyday Basics
Choose one or two daily-use items to elevate. A quality candle, a beautiful glass for your water, or a plush hand towel can turn an everyday task into a sensory treat. Luxury is in the details. Put your dish soap in a pretty glass decanter for aesthetic purposes. It will lift your spirits every time you do the dishes.
3. Indulgent Bath or Shower Time

Treat your evening shower like a ritual. Dim the lights, play soothing music, use a body scrub or fragrant oil, and take your time. Even five extra minutes can make it feel like a retreat instead of a routine.
Hang eucalyptus from your shower head. A eucalyptus cluster in the shower creates a relaxing atmosphere and offers more small niceties to enjoy while at home. The shower’s heat and moisture help release soothing oils in the eucalyptus.
4. Create a Cozy Listening Space
Make a designated spot for listening to music, podcasts, or audiobooks. It can be as simple as fluffing a pillow on the couch and pouring a drink you enjoy.
For a second cup of coffee or tea, sit by a window and watch nature.
5. Create a Personal “Calm Drawer.”
Fill a drawer or small basket with things that comfort you. It could be favorite teabags, a small book of poetry or quotes, or a snack you save for slow days. It’s your little toolkit for unwinding, available whenever you feel you need it.
6. Bring Freshness Into Your Space

Add a bit of freshness to your home with a spritz of linen spray, a bundle of herbs on the counter, or a simple floral bouquet to enjoy small niceties.
7. Dress for Your Mood
Choose clothes that feel good against your skin. Whether it’s a flowy linen dress, a soft oversized sweater, or a matching lounge set. Dressing for comfort and mood, even if you’re not leaving the house. This can lift your spirits in a quiet but powerful way.
The most underrated luxury is time. Time to breathe, notice, and simply be. By slowing down and creating tiny moments of joy, your home becomes more than just a place to be. It becomes a place to live well.
Small Niceties That Make A Big Difference:
Let’s be real—some of us are just built for cozy. Give us a soft blanket, a warm drink, and a quiet evening, and we’re good. No jet-setting or all-day plans required. And honestly? That’s where the magic is.
You don’t need to spend a lot or leave the house to enjoy a little luxury. It’s all about the tiny things that make you pause and say, “Ooh, this is nice.”
8. Fancy Drinks for No Reason
Use a pretty glass to drink a simple glass of water. Slice up some lemon or toss in a few berries, and suddenly, you’re sipping like royalty. All the small luxuries in life, those small niceties to enjoy in your home.
9. Light The Good Candle

You know the one. The “I’ll burn this for a special night” candle. Go ahead and light it. Let the scent fill your space while you do the most ordinary things—folding laundry, reading a book, or staring into space. It changes the whole vibe.
10. Cozy Textures Everywhere
Blankets, socks, robes, fluffy bath mats…soft things are essential. Keep your favorite throw nearby and don’t underestimate the joy of curling up and relaxing in style.

If your cat is apt to curl up there and nap, then it’s a soft spot, you can be sure! Cats know all about enjoying small niceties, and they feel no guilt about that.
11. A Bed That Feels Like a Cloud
Crisp sheets, a spritz of linen spray, and a pillow that makes you sigh out loud when you crawl into bed are a treat. Turn off your phone for a while and let yourself just be.
12. Background Music
Play soft piano music or your favorite lyrics, whatever makes you feel mellow and content. Playing music while you go about your day makes tidying rooms feel a little more special.
13. Allow For Quiet Time
Even if it’s just 5 minutes, carve out a little quiet time in the morning. Make your coffee and feast on the aroma as it brews. Light a candle, or just sit in silence and watch wildlife. These small niceties enjoyed at home, meant for relaxation and reflection, set a softer tone for the day ahead.
14. Treat-Yourself Essentials
Buy that hand candle that smells amazing. Get the good coffee beans. Have a chocolate bar stashed away for you. It doesn’t have to be big—it just has to make you smile.

15. Buy Yourself A Few Magazines
Magazines and books have gotten expensive. But occasionally, pause on the magazine aisle and choose a few magazines to take home. Or purchase that book you’ve been eyeing. When you get home, pour a beverage and enjoy sipping it.
Luxury doesn’t have to be expensive. Sometimes, it’s just slowing down enough to notice what feels good. Your home is your little world—why not make it feel a bit magical, just for you? Enjoy small niceties at home as a gift to yourself.
Being a homebody doesn’t mean you can’t feel luxurious while doing small everyday homemaking chores.

A dear friend told me to pay special attention to this particular blog post because she felt it applied to me in a huge way.
I’m in the process of creating a sanctuary in my home and many of the things you wrote about truly applied to me. Your post spoke volumes to me.
Just a simple thank you.
These are wonderful reminders for all of us!
Awe. A sleeping kitty on a blanket always makes me smile 🥰
Nice ideas, Brenda…I have always thought a good day was a day I had time to read!!! A lot!!
I agree that self-care is important, and so are little niceties around your home. I had the entire afternoon here to myself this afternoon (happens maybe once a week, depending on my husband’s and son’s work schedules) and I spent most of the time “fluffing my nest”. Makes my heart happy! I played my favorite music while doing so and indeed, had a candle lit.
The older I get, the more I baby myself. As I see it, my “job” is to be good to myself. Passive-aggressive remarks directed at me, snubs, that’s somebody’s else’s job. Let them have at it. Today, I’m treating myself to a nice lunch, then grab a new magazine and an iced coffee on the way home (with the windows rolled down), and finally plop down on my favorite rocker/recliner. Life is good.
Oh Brenda….
this is just what the doctor ordered. I have been starting a slow purge of my home’s
contents. I’ve have really pared down a lot of housewares and several sets of dishes. I checked with my girls and sisters and sister-in-law to see if they wanted any of my items. Sadly, not much was desired. So, I have brought what was left to my parish. There it was appreciated and taken home to new families and their homes. I did discover a few botannical plates, bowls and pretty cups. They will feel special for my summer meals and morning coffee. I am going to purchase a few good dark chocolates and enjoy strawberries with them.
A girlfriend came over with a little decorative bottle of Grand Marnier. I watch her cats, collect her mail and mow her lawn when she travels. She brings me little luxuries which I always enjoy. She cut up strawberries and poured a little Grand Marnier over them. She let it steep and then we ate it over Cookies and Cream ice cream. It was soooo good!
Love this post! Thanks
Ah “built for cozy, that’s where the magic is”. Perfect! This is my favorite post you’ve ever written! Enjoy your day!
Most women are ‘other’ oriented and givers. We tend to take care of parents, children, spouses, and yes workplace bosses first. I had many job interviews through the years where I was hired because I said “my job is to make your life easier and make you look good.” A woman can loose herself in all that giving. Your list of selfcare hints comes at a particularly stressful time in my and many others’ lives.
Brenda
I have been cleaning clutter for years. Get it done and it is back. I have been very sick a few times. I have lists. I have no answers to keep clutter put away. Thank you if you can help.
