Kendra, Marley, and Riley brought sandwiches and potato chips for lunch yesterday. Riley was to return to Norman for college today. Kendra’s boyfriend Scott met them here.

The Kittens

After we ate, Kendra, Marley, and Riley put the rug under my bed. If I’d known it would be that much trouble, I probably would have thought twice about purchasing it. I’d ordered it because Ivy keeps hurting her back leg jumping off the bed.

I ordered Ivy pet steps to walk up to my bed, but for some reason, she typically jumps down when she wants to leave the room.

My bedroom is relatively small, and furniture was along the walls, so they had to get the rug underneath. It was quite a chore.

They were here for a few hours, and then the kids went to their dad’s for a few days.

The snow is still on the ground, and Scott cleared the sidewalk for me. There’s no reason I need to go out for a few days. I’ll order groceries again this week.

I’ve been inside since bringing the kittens home Thursday before last. I’ve never had problems feeling restless indoors. I can read a book or find something to do. I’ve never thought I needed to be around other people all that much. I guess that comes from growing up in the country and having to entertain myself.

Right now, I’m watching two energetic kittens hell-bent on getting themselves into kitten trouble. They’re really very sweet, and it’s entertaining watching them.

How Are Ivy & The Kittens Doing:

Ivy, for the most part, is still hissing and growling at the kittens. I see a little headway here and there.

I left the kittens out of the guestroom Friday night and last night, and it went okay. Simon cries pitifully if I close them in the guest room.

There were no crashes in the middle of the night, so that’s good. Ivy probably stayed up on the top of the cat tower all night.

I could hear Simon and Daisy running up and down the house, chasing one another and playing. When I’m in bed, they run right past my door, as my bedroom is next to the dining room and in the middle of the house. Their feet sound like little hooves running back and forth.

I don’t know how the choice of who will chase who is made, but they go back and forth for a while with that. Then they’ll stop and get into fight mode, and the fun starts again. They’re acting out some primal genetic sequence cats are born with. Then they’re worn out and fall asleep.

What I’m Watching:

I’m watching Protection on BritBox.

Protection is a 2024 British crime drama miniseries on BritBox.

Liz Nyles (Siobhan Finneran) is a witness protection officer involved in a corruption scandal after an affair with a coworker. Liz is determined to expose the corruption within her unit and uncover the truth.

Before I began watching this show, I watched Ellis on Acorn TV. There was just one season to watch. I don’t know if it will be back for a second season.

What’s fascinating about watching British TV is seeing the same actors appear in different shows. It’s kind of like watching “Old Home Week.”

What I’m Currently Reading:

I ordered this One True Thing from Thriftbooks, an online used bookstore I discovered last fall. This book was published in 2006. I’ve probably read it before, but I’m rereading it because Anna Quindlen is a superb writer. I’d read any of her books twice or more.

Summary:

Ellen Gulden is enjoying her career as a successful magazine writer in New York City when she learns that her mother, Kate, is dying of cancer. Ellenโ€™s father insists she quit her job and return home to become a caregiver. A high-powered career woman, Ellen has never felt she had much in common with her mother, who was a homemaker and the heart of their family.

Yet, as Ellen begins to spend time with Kate, she discovers many surprising truths about herself and the woman she thought she knew so well.

Later, when Ellen is accused of the mercy killing of her mother, she must not only defend her own life but make a difficult choiceโ€”either accept responsibility for an act she did not commit or divulge the name of the person she believes committed a painful act of love.

I read much of the book after turning off the TV. It’s a compelling look at how mothers and daughters sometimes trade roles as the mother ages or becomes ill. Daughters finally see what goes into mothering them that they took for granted before.

  1. I sympathize with the rug under the bed issue. I have wanted to turn my rug for the last 3 or 4 years, but the thought of moving the bed out into the hall makes my husband and I tired. I am going to use the opportunity of getting a new mattress to get rid of the rug altogether and try runners on each side of the bed. I have two nice ones already purchased in anticipation. Fingers crossed.

  2. Well that sounds like an interesting book. Youโ€™re kittensโ€ฆ so sweet! Iโ€™m sorry Ivy still isnโ€™t happy about them. I hope sheโ€™ll come around. Have the kittens been scratching your furniture or trying to climb your curtains? Are they still jumping up on your mantle? My friend keeps a water spray bottle handy for when her cats jump on things she doesnโ€™t want them on. I donโ€™t have cats, so I donโ€™t know. I have a dog. She jumps on all my furniture, but I donโ€™t mind. Youโ€™ll have to show us your room. Or did you already show us, and I donโ€™t remember? All the snow is crazy! Iโ€™m sure everyone is going to be happy to see spring arrive. Speaking of that, have you been thinking about planting your garden (what youโ€™re going to plant, etc)? Iโ€™m looking forward to seeing all the pretty plants. Mamie is going to be so pretty and fancy once you get to work your magic in the garden!

  3. DeeDee Clark says:

We definitely find it interesting watching Britbox and Acorn, to see the same actors appeal in different roles. We find the same thing in Australian TV series. We’ve just begun watching Darby and Joan for the second or third season. I can’t remember which. We love Madame Blanc, and we just discovered Castle which is set in NY, and have enjoyed that.

    1. Iโ€™ll have to check these shows out.

  4. Sometimes the fact that the British actors are on multiple shows can be disturbing. The first show I ever saw Nicola Walker in was an episode of Scott and Bailey where she played a very disturbed character. So at first it was hard for me to get used to her as a detective in Unforgotten. (But I haven’t had any trouble getting used to her as Annika.)

    1. I need to watch Annika.

  5. I’ve so enjoyed reading about the kittens and seeing photos of them! Daisy & Simon are absolutely adorable. I have an older cat who chirps as Simon does, and she rarely meows.
    Stay safe & warm!

    1. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that chirping noise from a cat before. It’s very cute.

  6. Thanks for the update. Stay warm with your kittiesโ€ฆ.and cat.

    1. They are so sweet, and they both purr so loudly!

  7. Annette Tracy says:

We have a cat that was born to a feral mother but away from her early and somehow we got her after the man that rescued her fell sick. She is maybe 7 pounds and a night owl. You can hear her tiny feet running thru the house. Sadly she isnโ€™t a cuddler, doesnโ€™t want to be picked up but will snuggle with me occasionally and suck her toes. So Iโ€™m sure you are having a wonderful time with them. And maybe, just maybe Ivy will join in soon!

    1. I’ve never seen a cat suck its toes!

  8. Deb Pelton says:

I had to chuckle when you said you keep seeing the same actors in multiple shows ๐Ÿ˜‚ we keep saying the same thing! Then we try and figure out what show and what was their characterโ€™s name etc. Weโ€™ve decided thereโ€™s only about 37 actors and they just keep getting changed up-too funny ๐Ÿคฃ
We too just finished Ellis. We liked it a lot and are hoping for another season.
Enjoy your time sequestered at home. I try not to go out any more than I have to. I guess Covid is on the rise here and pneumonia and flu, just another reason to stay I. Thanks for update on kittensโ€™ antics! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›

    1. I wonder how that works? If the British actors are on a contract?

  9. They are so darn cute ๐Ÿ˜

    1. Daisy has been in the little soft red bed I have on the guest bed sleeping. She likes that spot apparently. Simon chirps. And he follows me to the bathroom.

  10. Those kittens are so cute! Have you tried Brokenwood on Britbox? it’s a detective series based in New Zealand. It’s humorous (not raunchy) and the scenery and Maori culture is amazing. I think there are 12 seasons. Light, not dramatic. I see enough worrying things in the nightly news and prefer entertainment without major drama.

    1. You know I can’t remember. I’ve watched so many!
