This week in Sunday Snippets 12.14.25…

After the warm day we had on Thursday, it got cold again. Last night it was really cold.

Riley, Andrew, and Kasi came over for lunch yesterday. Kasi stopped to get sandwiches for us to eat. Riley arrived first, and he and I had a good discussion about various things.

Yesterday evening, I was taking more food and water to the stray cats on the front porch when a big possum met me at the door. The possum scooted down the steps as I set out food and water. So now I guess I’m feeding possums, too. That possum was at least as big as Ivy.

When I told Kendra, she said, “Well, possums have to eat too,” And I agree.

Smitty next door said, “I’d better go put more food out on the porch for the possums so they can eat and go curl up somewhere.”

We have a neighborhood that is good to the creatures that live among us.

What I’m Watching:

Netflix picked up “Homeland”, which I’m watching for the second time, starring Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, and Mandy Patinkin. It is based on the Israeli series “Prisoners of War.”

Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody returns home following eight years in captivity. CIA agent Carrie Mathison thinks he has turned and is connected to a terror plot to be carried out on American soil. She draws him into a dangerous cat-and-mouse game that imperils America’s national security.

Later, Carrie is promoted and returns to the front lines overseas. She is assigned to one of the CIA’s most volatile and dangerous stations in the Middle East, where she is at the heart of the battle in the war on terror.

Years later, after being disillusioned and placing herself in a self-imposed exile in Berlin, Carrie becomes estranged from the CIA. She eventually returns to the States to work for a foundation that provides aid to Muslims living in America.

What I’m Reading:

Amazon

I’m currently reading “Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. I borrowed the book from Rhonda.

What It’s About

The Hunger Games is set in a dystopian future, in the nation of Panem, where the wealthy Capitol forces each of its 12 poorer districts to send a boy and a girl (tributes) to fight to the death in a televised event called the Hunger Games.

It serves as punishment and a reminder of the Capitol’s power. It follows Katniss Everdeen of District 12 as she volunteers to save her sister, becoming a symbol of rebellion. It’s a story of survival, oppression, and uprising against a totalitarian regime, blending action, romance, and political commentary.

On my Kindle, I’m also reading “Room for Rent” by Noelle W. Ihli.

What It’s About

The rundown rental house didnโ€™t seem so bad at first. But now someone is stealing her food, rattling her bedroom doorknob, and digging through her belongings.

Each night brings more disturbing incidents. And each night, Nya is more convinced that itโ€™s not an intruder. She suspects the culprit is hiding in plain sight: her peculiar roommate-of-necessity, Sidney.

Nya canโ€™t afford to live anywhere else. The horrible rental is her only option. In a few months, sheโ€™ll finish her final semester of collegeโ€”and get the hell out of dodge. But to her horror, the sinister mind games are just the beginning. Before long, sheโ€™s forced to face the possibility that her physical safety may be at risk. Maybe even her life.

The truth is more terrifying than Nya could have guessed. And as the situation spirals out of control, itโ€™s suddenly clear that surviving the night may no longer be an option.

  1. Great roundup this weekโ€”Sunday Snippets 12.14.25 covers a nice mix of local updates and seasonal topics. The mention of winter prep really hits home, especially with city of saskatoon snow removal being such an important service this time of year. Always helpful to stay informed during the colder months.

  2. I love possums too. When we were selling our house there just happened to be a possum in the garden and the realtor who we were considering came by, saw the possum and said, ‘oh they are such ugly creatures’ needless to say she did not get the job!!
At the moment I am feeding about 12 squirrels, lots of birds, and we do have a possum living under our shed, and last night I could just make out a rabbit in the garden. It is a joy to me to help them get thru the winter months.

  3. The possums come around when I feed my ferals, too. Just FYI – they love dry cat food. I don’t mind because they are such gentle creatures that don’t do any harm and they eat mosquitoes and mice. They also get along well with cats! Cats will usually just continue eating and ignore the possums. Then when the cats leave, the possum will come and eat the rest of the cat food.

    1. Thks Melanie for the tip about dry cat food for the possums.

  4. A long time ago when we still let cats go outside we lived on the second floor of our two story house. The house had back stairs and the cats were able to get in and out of the door at the bottom of the stairs so we would let them in and out through our kitchen door at the top of the stairs. One day I thought I heard a cat outside the door asking to come in so I opened it and there was a possum sitting on the top step looking like he thought I’d let him in too. I did not!

  5. I have to say that you are a gifted writer! I am amazed how your descriptions send visuals to minds. The blog is so enjoyable.

  6. I agree possums are hungry too. I put food out for my one feral cat she always has leftovers in her bowl. Right after she’s done a huge possum shows up if she eats it all I put out a little more for him. I can’t stand to see an animal go hungry. So nice you have neighbors who also care.

    1. I can’t stand to see animals go hungry either. I just keep buying food, and whoever eats it is welcome to it.
