This week in Sunday Snippets 6.29.25…

Kasi came and brought Thai food for lunch, so we had an hour or so together to eat and chat. An old friend from long, long ago contacted me, and then came to see me. More on that later.

The container flowers are still beautiful with all the rain we’ve had recently, but it’s heating up. Which means I’ll need to water at least once per day, if not twice. Luckily, thanks to Kendra’s ingenious idea with the water hose on the pole, I can water my plants without leaving the porch.

My zinnias, which I planted from seed, are now blooming. I love photographingย zinniasย because they have a pretty texture and shape and are available in various colors.

Greg and I are still working on putting up curtains. I added another adhesive hook where the one before fell, and so far, so good. The other side stayed hung up there, just barely, until Greg could come and deal with it.

The curtains have been on the replacement hook for three days, and they are still up there. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Now we’re working on the living room. He came and put up the hardware for one windowย but had to leave before hanging the rod. We do things like this piecemeal, a little at a time. That’s okay; I’d ratherย buyย these things a bit at a time, too.

Then he came on Friday and hung curtains on one window in the living room.

I don’t buy expensive curtains, because if I get tired of them, or the kittens climb them, I haven’t lost that much. They’re kittens. Ivy was the same way, but she grew out of it. They will too. Well, fingers crossed.

They don’t climb them, but things sometimes happen when two half-wild kittens are running through the house like their tails are on fire.

Roof Leaking In The Laundry Room:

The laundry room has a water bubble in the ceiling from all the rain. There also appears to be water in the ceiling fixture, so an electrician and a roofer have been notified. The utility shelf is pulled away from the wall, and tubs have been placed on the floor underneath the leak.

Movies I’ve Watched This Week

CopyCat Movie:

The Copycat movie from 1995 with Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter.

I watched Copycat with Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter, a movie made in 1995. Strange how the hairstyles tell you what particular era you’re watching.

Backtrack Movie:

Adrian Brody plays a troubled psychologist named Dr. Peter Bower in the 2015 movie Backtrack, set in Australia. He loses his daughter when she is hit by a truck, and he is grieving.

Peter is haunted by his past, where his recollections are fuzzy. He returns to his childhood home, where his estranged father lives. During this trip to his hometown, he remembers what happened by the railroad tracks and uncovers a hideous secret from his childhood.

The TV Series I’m Watching:

(Just finished watching). I watched all four seasons of True Detective on HBO and will be waiting for season 5. The first was excellent, the second was somewhat abysmal, and the third and fourth were wonderful. Jodie Foster was in the fourth season.

Theย first season, starringย Matthew McConaughey,ย Woody Harrelson,ย and Michelle Monaghan, aired in 2014. It takes place inย Louisianaย and follows a pair ofย Louisiana State Policeย detectives as they pursue aย serial killerย withย occultย links over 17 years.

Theย second season, starringย Colin Farrell,ย Rachel McAdams,ย Kelly Reilly, andย Vince Vaughn, aired in 2015. It is set inย California and focuses on three detectives from three cooperating police jurisdictions and a criminal-turned-businessman. The detectives investigate a series of crimes they believe are linked to the murder of a corrupt politician.

Theย third season, starringย Mahershala Ali andย Stephen Dorff, aired in 2019. It takes place in theย Ozarksย over three time periods as a pair ofย Arkansas State Policeย detectives investigate a macabre crime involving two missing children.

It took me a while to figure out that one detective was Stephen Dorff. I just couldn’t place him. He had an excellent accent for his role as a hick from the sticks cop.

Theย fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, starringย Jodie Fosterย andย Kali Reis, aired in 2024. It takes place inย Alaskaย and follows the investigation into the sudden disappearance of a team of eight men from a research station.ย

What Series I’m Watching Now: The Waterfront

Cast: Holt McCallany and Maria Bello star in Kevin Williamsonโ€™s latest drama, The Waterfront. For fans of good old-fashioned dysfunctional families, a fresh drama is now stirring up some troubled waters on Netflix.ย

The Waterfront is inspired by actual events and set against the backdrop of coastal North Carolina. The series explores family dynamics and the lengths people will go when their legacy is on the line.

The Book I Just Finished Reading:

A stranger has infiltrated your familyโ€ฆand now heโ€™s taking over.

In John Marrs’ novel, The Stranger In Her House, Paulโ€™s just here to help, or so he claimsโ€•sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for an older widow named Gwen. But for Gwenโ€™s daughter Connie, thereโ€™s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. Heโ€™s a little too kind, a little too involvedโ€ฆWorse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.

The last thing Connie wants is a stranger meddling in the safe routine sheโ€™s built around Gwen. She loves being the one Gwen turns to for cooking, cleaning, and company. But the more Paul visits, the more Gwen relies on him. When he conveniently finds himself between homes and has no choice but to move in, Connie is sure heโ€™s trying to push her out completely.

Itโ€™s her word against his, though, and as her attempts to unmask him become ever more desperate, sheโ€™s not the only one left wondering if sheโ€™s lost her grip on reality. But when events start spiralling rapidly out of her control, should Connie wage all-out war on Paul and risk losing Gwen forever, or has that been his plan all along?

In Dear Wife, Beth Murphy is on the runโ€ฆ

For nearly a year, Sabine Hardison has been planning her escape. She’s thought through everythingโ€”a new look, a new name, and a new cityโ€”because one small slip and her husband will find her.

A couple of hundred miles away, Jeffrey returns home from a work trip to find his wife, Sabine, now renamed Beth, missing. Wherever she is, sheโ€™s taken almost nothing with her. Her abandoned car is the only evidence the police have, and all signs point to foul play.

As the police search for leads, the case becomes increasingly convoluted. Sabineโ€™s carefully laid plans for her future indicate trouble at home and a husband who would be better off without her.

But are things as clear-cut as they seem? Where is Sabine? And who is Beth? The only certain thing is that someone is lying, and the truth wonโ€™t stay buried for long.
