Cozy French Country rooms can be soft and romantic, or chippy and vintage, or expensive and ornate.

In some ways French country style is similar to farmhouse style. However, it’s more elegant and a bit nuanced. French country style is inspired by the French countryside, and farmhouse style is inspired by American farms.

Both have old-world roots. French Country style has an emphasis on neutral or other soft colors.

A French country kitchen is refined but earthy. Think copper pots, glass-front armoires, wooden beams, and touches of gold.

This kitchen used a sage green paint color, brass accents, and wood counter tops. The atmosphere lends itself to both a luxurious and casual style.

I’m sure that you’d feel right at home in this cozy kitchen with airy plants scattered about, bringing a touch of nature into the room.

French Country Living Rooms:

When I think of French Country style living rooms, Provencal-style sitting rooms come to mind.

A neutral living room with flowers and a nubby rug

This French Country living room is a study in neutrals. There are cozy elements, such as the flowers on the coffee table, a nubby rug, and other textural interests.

The mantel is decorated with candles, the couch has lots of throw pillows, and the lampshade color brings more warmth to the room.

French Country Bedrooms:

The French bed is always the focal point of the bedroom. The furniture should be a little distressed. But there might be an elaborate headboard.

The colors you choose for a French Country bedroom should be lavenders, pale lilacs, creams, soft sky blues, and sage greens.

If a more rustic style is preferred, consider burnt orange tones, browns, and yellows.

Soft bed linens and flowers bring an elegance to the bedroom

This bedroom has lots of soft neutral linens as well as a distressed upholstered bench at the foot of the bed.

Light and airy curtains and the requisite bouquet of flowers pair up nicely with the other decor in the room.

Wood beams bring in texture as well as a contrast to the feminine aspects of the room.

A French Country dining room should always have a chandelier. Mirrors in gilded frames should decorate the wall.

This dining space is casual, but the upholstered chairs are flowery and sumptuous. It looks much like a garden room or glassed-in porch.

A large chippy dining table contrasts nicely with the elegant chairs.

French-country spaces should be decorated with a combination of rustic and refined pieces, and trend more vintage-inspired than modern.

The rooms decorated in this style should not have sleek lines or high-gloss finishes.

  1. You sure did find some pretty pictures to show us. I love the tile backsplash/wall in the first picture, and I don’t know why, but I thought all the pretty plants were herbs, lol.

  2. What a beautiful post today!! Keep the decor coming.

  3. Brenda, Lovely post! I think French Country style is very versatile with a mix of florals, neutrals, rustic and more refined choices. It is a decor that is attainable through thrifting and re-using what we have. It lends itself to simple and minimal rooms that are very functional and areas that are formal and “more”. Thank you for the inspiration to do a little fluff up around my house! Sherry B

    1. It reminds me of cottage style, which I love, but is more elegant.

  4. I love French Country – soft and famine. A look that causes one to sigh!
Several years ago I ‘tripped’ across a script wing back chair and wanted to redo my living room. Then it occurred to me that the first time I sat in it I’d spill my glass of sweet tea and I’d have a huge stain I wouldn’t be able to hide. So, I stuck with my Farmhouse look. LOL

    1. I love farmhouse, cottage, and any other decor style. I also like to mix them.

  5. oh that makes me want to redo my whole house. It just looks so comfortable.

Brenda, you put so much thought into this post. French Country is beyond beautiful. Funny thing is I have an old English armoire. It’s the dark wood with a full length mirror down the middle on the door. I decided to sell it and they just don’t sell out here. So we’ve started using it for storage and it works great. Hides all my TP and PT.

    1. Maybe that is something telling you to keep that armoire! Who cares if TP and PT are stored in it?
