We can all learn valuable lessons from the beauty and melodious songs of birds. Their music is not to be replicated.

They sing to one another, a communication we don’t understand. Nor are we supposed to. Because it is a bird language all their own.

Bird Quotes:

I love quotes about birds. And I found some of my favorite quotes to share with you today.

A blue jay, small in size. Maybe not very old

โ€œBirds teach a great life lesson. All you have to do is listen to their song.โ€

They are born knowing their place in the world. To fly, to nest, to head south where it’s warmer. Gather in a group or sing a solitary song.

โ€œHold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.โ€ – Poet, novelist, and playwright Langston Hughes

In Lessons From Melodious Birds, this is a weathered birdhouse I found at a garage sale many years ago

โ€œA bird does not sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.โ€ -Maya Angelou

How amazing it is that birds are the very essence of freedom. Because they can spread their wings and fly.

I often have dreams in which I am flying. It seems so simple in my dreams. To raise my arms at my sides and lift myself into the air.

Going up and up and up. Looking down at the tiny dots that are people, buildings, and trees.

โ€œThe caged bird sings with a fearful trill, of things unknown, but longed for still, and his tune is heard on the distant hill, for the caged bird sings of freedom.โ€ – Maya Angelou

Bird Watching:

I’ve loved watching birds since I was a child. I grew up in the country, with no other children to play with. So my imagination was my friend. And I spent a lot of time watching birds.

โ€œRelationships are like birds. If you hold tightly, they die. If you hold loosely, they fly. But if you hold with care, they remain with you forever.โ€

โ€œThe reason birds can fly, and we can’t, is simply because they have perfect faith, for to have faith is to have wings.โ€
โ€• J.M. Barrie, The Little White Bird

What Would It Be Like To Have Wings?

Oh, what would it be like to have wings? How wonderful it would be to raise my arms and be lifted from the ground.

To learn what it is like to be a bird.

A bird that looks angry

โ€œShe decided to free herself, dance into the wind, create a new language. And birds fluttered around her, writing โ€œyesโ€ in the sky.โ€
โ€• Monique Duval

Can you imagine being so close to the sky that you could perhaps write words across the blue expanse?

To drift with those nebulous clouds and be weightless and free.

A hawk perching on a wood fence

โ€œIn order to see birds it is necessary to become a part of the silence.โ€
โ€• Robert Lynd

To see birds, analyze them, and enjoy their birdsong, you must be paying attention. You must lift your head and listen to nature call your name.

Lessons From Melodious Birds:

It seems the world is too busy doing everything else to pause and enjoy the outdoors. To stop, take a deep breath, and watch the beauty of the birds.

Female cardinal at the bird bath

โ€œThe bird dares to break the shell, then the shell breaks open and the bird can fly openly. This is the simplest principle of success. You dream, you dare, and you fly.โ€
โ€• Israelmore Ayivor

Oh, to dream and dare and fly. To be a bird, to feel weightless, and finally, to become a speck in the sky.

A hawk on a headstone in a cemetery

โ€œSoft feathers cannot make a cruel bird kind.โ€
โ€• Munia Khan

The above quote is kind of like the proverbial wolf in sheep’s clothing. You might think it is kind and benevolent. But what you can’t see is that underneath it’s actually cruel and heartless.

Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow. Why then, oh way, can’t I? – The Wizard Of Oz (Edgar Y. Harburg)

This is my favorite song about birds. I haven’t seen a rainbow in years. Have I not been looking? Or paying attention?

We can learn lessons from the beautiful, melodious birds that perch in the trees and fly over our heads.

Did I Miss The Rainbows?

Did I miss all the rainbows that might have appeared after it rained?

Two mourning doves at the bird bath

I imagine that the birds saw the rainbows as they flew across the blue, blue sky. Using the wind to assist them as they fly heavenward.

  1. Our grandson asked us the other day what animal we would want to be and my husband said a bird. He's always wanted to fly, and he's totally transfixed when he sees an eagle flying.

    Lovely shots as always,

  2. I love the birdhouse in the first photo and I can see why you've got so many winged visitors!

Over the Rainbow is one of my all time favorite tunes and now I'll be humming it all night long! Of course Judy Garland's version is a classic, but have you listened to the version by IZ? I had the song on my Playlist back when I first started blogging and after reading your post, I had to find it for you on Youtube. If you have a chance, check it out. He's no longer with us, but his voice lives on. Happy weekend!

  3. Brenda, this is off topic but I noticed that beautiful featherweight singer sewing machine on your sidebar. Love it! I found my mom's after she passed away and had it refurbished. I think she got it at an antique store. I've never used it yet. Maybe this winter.

  4. Wow! You captured some beauties! Love the bird houses too. Did you photograph these in your backyard? Great photography.
