The Kittens Are Settling In

It’s been four days since I brought the kittens home, and they’re settling in. They are so sweet and energetic.

They spend a lot of time staring out the window of the cat tower. Daisy especially sits for extended periods, looking out various windows.
They often sleep together. When they do, their legs wind around one another, making it look like someone is holding hands.
Silly Kitten Behavior:
Simon can also lick Daisy, and suddenly, a spat will begin, and they start tussling. For no apparent reason! I suppose it’s just normal kitten behavior.
Ivy still hisses at them, so I keep them apart. She only sees them when one of them gets away from me when the bedroom door is open. Ivy likes to spend much of the day in my bedroom. And the kittens have the guest room as their central spot.

I’ll let them out of the guest room to run through the house and expend some energy. Then I’ll put them back in and tell Ivy the coast is clear, so she will come out.
So far, this arrangement is working, so I’ll stick with it for now. I hope Ivy adjusts to them to some degree.
After supper, it’s mine and Ivy’s time. I shower and then lie in bed with her while watching TV and reading. It was our old routine, and I want to ensure it isn’t disrupted.

They run from one room to another, chasing each other and playing. They are so energetic!
Unfortunately, I have to watch Daisy because she likes to scratch furniture. If I say something to her, like stop scratching that, she’ll stop and walk away.
Simon often follows me to the bathroom. He has figured out how to drink dripping water from the bathtub faucet like Ivy does. Like Ivy, he perches at the side and leans over to the faucet.
He makes this strange little chirping sound a lot too. I’ve never heard a cat do that before.
Leaping Up To The Fireplace Mantel:
The other day, they leaped up to the fireplace mantel and knocked all the paintings offโluckily, none with glass. They are daring. They like to use the couch as the jumping point and leap onto other pieces of furniture.
How can two small cats make so much noise running through the house? I have noticed that they rarely walk but run instead.
Now that I think about it, toddlers tend to do the same thing. Once they learn to walk, they like to run.

The other day, I was texting with my next-door neighbor, Mark, and told him about adopting the kittens. I said I should probably have my head examined, getting two kittens.
Oh, but they bring me such joy! It is a delight to watch their behavior.
Sometimes, it gets quiet, and I go looking for them. They might be in the guest room, one in the little red bed and the other on the stack of quilts.
They play and play and wear themselves out, and then they need to take a nap.
Having two kittens sure is fun. I’m entertained just watching them. There never is a dull moment around here right now!
Below is what I also ordered for them and would recommend highly if you have cats or kittens:
- Hooded cat litter box (It helps to contain the litter so there’s less mess. I have one for Ivy too)
- Non-slip stainless steel cat food bowls
- Steel cat litter scoop (Don’t bother with those flimsy plastic ones!)
- Kitten scratching post
- Low dust lightweight Purina Tidy Cats Litter
- Purina One high protein kitten food (This is what they ate at their foster home)
- Purina Pro Plan High Protein Wet Kitten Food (Also what they ate at their foster home)
- Silicone pet can food cover that will fit three sizes of canned food

I have found that using packing tape…the kind you use to seal boxes you ship works well. Put it on the areas that they like to scratch (usually the front and corners of couch or chairs. Does not hurt the furniture. They do not like slick things. Also, hanging an item like a wind breaker (slick also) over the area that they want to scratch will deter them.
Georgia m my other cats make that chirping sound when they see a bird.
Kitten n cat zoomies! The kittens will slow down but many cats still have a zoomie moment once a day!
They are such cuties!
Is that Ivyโs curtain tie I see on the cat tower!! Uh-Oh!!
Yes. I put it on there trying to encourage her to use the cat tower. I’ve taken it down now.
I have a bottle of a product called No Scratch that I’ve had for years that I used on my sectional when Smidge the new kitty started scratching and it still works. My furniture is a dark peacock blue and it didn’t leave any residue at all. It trained him that furniture isn’t that much fun cuz it stinks. The good thing is we can’t smell it. You can get it on Amazon.
Thanks Teri! I’ll go look for it. And Smidge stopped scratching it completely?
The kittens are adorable! Youโve certainly got your hands full. I hope Ivy learns to enjoy them as much as you do.
Me and you both. Maybe when they settle down. Which won’t be for awhile.
Glad they are settling in. My older female, who was also a rescue, has never accepted my other rescue kitties! Her nose got out of joint when they became a part of the household and she is the “queen” and for the most part, doesn’t want anything to do with them! She even fights with my older rescue female, who I think is her mom! She just likes her quiet time and away from the others, so I accept it. My male, who came a year later than her, I think is her half brother, and she will tolerate him sometimes, but if he gets too friendly, then she hisses and bats at him and runs off. So I too have 3 cats, and sometimes, it’s like having spoiled toddlers around.. always splitting up their fights and hissy fits, and my male, though 8 years old now, acts like a spoiled “bad boy” sometimes and just does things to get my attention, like scratching, or jumping up on the table, or running through the house and jumping on a chair and knocking it over!
Hopefully the way you are gradually getting Ivy used to them. Kittens CAN be quite joksters with older cats! Also… glad you got the cat tower.. as a guy on Youtube called the “Cat Whisperer” said, an indoor cat being able to look outside is like them having “Cat TV”. They love to watch activity and motion and love to watch birds and squirrels, etc.
Good luck! As you know, they do LOVE stacks of quilts to lay on! I have quilts and fleece blankets everywhere.. and each cat has their “own” pile that they love, and don’t want to share with the others! Oh such fun! Marilyn
And that may be the case here. But the two kittens will have one another if Ivy doesn’t come around. I also read that kittens can “stress” adult cats.
Kittens are a hoot! And as cute as cute can be! It’s good they have each other. Ivy may do better knowing that they’ll play with each other and leave her alone. LOL. They’ll learn to leave Ivy alone if that’s what she ends up wanting since they’ll have each other.
That’s what I thought when I agreed to take them both.
I have never had a cat but Ivy and the kittens sure seem like fun. And the best part is they do not have to go outside. We have 12โ of snow and our dog would not have and wasnโt a fan of going out to go potty! Oh, she would play in the snow and get all those snowballs frozen to her hair. She was a Cotton and they have hair not fur! So you enjoy all their shenanigans! Stay warm and safe!
I guess Ivy got tired of the bedroom. She came into the living room and got up on the cat tower. But every time the little ones got within 4-5 feet, she hissed at them. They just stopped and looked at her.
I love reading these updates!
You will be seeing lots of their shenanigans. Where do they get all this energy? Simon makes this chirping noise when he’s playing.
The first photo of Simon and Daisy lounging on the cat tower looking out the window is priceless! Simon appears to be presenting himself as an Alpha male. I wonder how that will work with Ivy, who is used to being the Queen of the household. You may be in for a very interesting and active summer Brenda! I hope the kitties don’t break anything while they’re learning how to live inside a home that is filled with so many interesting places to explore and things to see (and play with or – oops!)
How did you see that he’s an alpha male? I don’t understand that. I know what it means. But I can’t look at him and ascertain that. I keep the plant room door closed. Ivy got tired of them and returned to my bedroom, where I shut the door. Kendra said she looked like a grumpy old man.
Thanks for the post for the cat stands. They have some very nice ones and a big sale now too.
A tip Iโve used to scare cats or puppies from running out the door is to put some coins or small
rocks โ just enough to make noise when you shake it. But if they approach you throw it near thyour door not knowing them and it scares them. Itโs worked for me. Enjoy your babies.
That’s a great idea! Thanks.
Quelque chose qu elle apprรฉcie et pas quelqu’un !!!! Ce tรฉlรฉphone !
Phone problems irritate me too.
They began to open the bathroom cabinet door yesterday but got distracted and went somewhere else. It’s like watching a tornado swirl around. They’re never in one spot for more than a minute unless they’re sleeping.
The picture of Daisy on the quilts is so precious. Glad things are going well.
I wanted to use a photo of her head hanging down from the quilts but it was too blurry.
The scratching post is a great idea. My cat never scratched my furniture as long as she had scratching posts.
Simon especially goes around to all the scratching posts and scratches. I have to train little Miss Daisy. I have them scratching posts all around the house.
Thanks for posting about the kittens . Such fun , and cute pictures . Hopefully they will all learn to coexist. Itโs funny the noises our pets make . I have a maltipoo sometimes he walks around making the sound uh uh uh. Kinda like a toddler that canโt talk yet . I think itโs funny . And of course try to figure out what he needs . I never had a dog do that before.
He probably wonders why you can’t understand him.
