There’s Such a Thing as Too Much Rain

Rain is wonderful, but there’s such a thing as too much rain when it comes to a garden. I am always grateful for rain, but my poor rosemary plant is a goner. Other plants may not be far behind.
Too much rain, too little sun is the culprit. So, overall, my garden this year is not as beautiful or lush as it was last year.

The yard has had to be mowed once a week, which I hate because it costs more. But the weeds get high pretty quickly, so I don’t have much choice.
I’d have more grass and fewer weeds if I had applied fertilizer or weed killer. But then there’s the stray cats to think about. I don’t want to harm them.
There are weed killers on the market that are supposed to be safe for animals, but they’re typically quite expensive. Too expensive for a yard as big as mine.
Too Much Rain:
I don’t know why we’re getting so much rain. Typically, it seems to be heavier in the springtime. But this year is different.
The city is changing out the water meters this week, when the rain isn’t preventing their work, anyway. There’s been so much rain that workers are just trying to get things done and move on to other neighborhoods. So, they work as long as they can.
Pink Coneflowers:

I still have coneflowers blooming, but I fear the rain will do them in before long if it doesn’t let up. Coneflowers (Echinacea) need more sun than they’re getting. Six to eight hours of sun a day would be best.
For some time now, I’ve tried planting perennials like coneflowers, but they always seem to die during the winter months. And this year, it might be the moisture level.
When I look at the coneflower, I always think it resembles an umbrella, with its downturned petals.
Cucumber Plant in a Container:

This is my first and biggest cucumber so far. I think it’s about ready to eat.
This variety is Persian Green Fingers that I ordered from Renee’s Garden, so it doesn’t get much bigger than this.
The brick two-story house on the corner has let its front yard fill with Black-eyed Susans again this year.

Daisy on the Couch Sleeping:
And here’s Daisy taking a nap on the couch.

She seems to blend into the quilt lying over the top of the couch with her ginger coloring. She’s such a pretty girl.
Simon and Ivy are off somewhere else, taking their morning nap after their morning meal. So all is quiet this morning.
I’m about ready for my morning coffee. I just looked out the window, and it’s overcast, so there might be more rain. I’m hoping for at least a few hours of sun for the sake of my garden.

Et nous à Paris on suffoque depuis plusieurs jours !
J échange pluie contre franc soleil!
Here in Wisconsin we’ve had lots of rain too. Yesterday it was a thunder storm and poured like crazy, with hail, and when it finished the grass looked like it had snowed. I was lucky to get one pot of petunias undercover before it started, but all the rest, 8 pots of flowers are goners. I have a concrete statue that was holding a gazing ball. Statue is still here but the gazing ball is shattered as is a pottery clock shape thermometer we had hanging on the railing of the deck. You are so right Brenda. There really is too much rain this year. Doesn’t even seem like a real Summer yet. Still waiting for a week that has good sunny days.
We here near Chicago have also had lots of rain but this is the best my garden has looked in 4 years. The daylights are loving it! My newly planted columbines are blooming like mad. my hostess are huge for this time of year. My river birches branches have lifted higher than ever before. It looks beautiful but, sadly, its roots are destroying our patio. A very expensive tree removal is in our future. But for now my roses are blooming, the pink hydrangeas are the best they’ve ever been, my coreopsis are fat and full, and I will smile for now.
Brenda, seems like we either get too much or too little rain. Here in Northern TN we’re still in a drought. We are now in a heat dome with little chance of rain. y grass actually just all got green. Now it’ll turn brown and crunchy. Global climate change is awful.
I’ll do my best to send you some sunshine and please try to move your rain this way!
Here’s to a Summer full of the good things!
