Today in Sunday Snippets 7.13.25…

My zinnias are blooming in their pots out front. They fade in the heat, and I water them when I notice them drooping.

It was extremely hot here this week. I’m grateful to have air conditioning in this house.

Wednesday, Marley and Riley came over to help me with some things, and then we ordered supper. The kids went to pick it up.

Earlier, I had gone to my favorite bakery and bought each of us a chocolate cupcake with sprinkles. So we had a filling supper and then dessert, which I usually don’t have.

Kendra was busy, and I was giving her an evening when she didn’t have to think about the kids’ meal when she got home.

Thrift Store Shopping:

On Friday, I took Marley to a few thrift stores. She’d never been thrifting before. The first one was one I’d never been to, but it was a bust. The second one ended up being closed. At the third one, the Animal Rescue Thrift Store, which I frequent most often, I scored a few things.

Marley didn’t find anything she wanted, but she enjoyed looking at the jewelry.

Here’s what I found at the Animal Rescue Thrift Store:

Pack of Old Photos:

A pack of old photos. I love acquiring what I call “flea market relatives.”

I often wonder why these photos aren’t still with the family where they originated. Perhaps it’s because I left home with only two or three photos of myself as a child and nothing else.

So I think how priceless these family photos are. To see your face in other faces, to note a resemblance of high foreheads or familiar cheekbones, etc. It seems like you wouldn’t want to part with such a treasure.

Coffee Pot:

I found this coffee pot. I’m not sure what the thing that sits under it is, but I’m assuming it might be where you put hot water to keep the coffee warm. Is anyone familiar with this?

Salad Plates:

Then there are these two salad plates. I may have had a few dishes in this pattern at some point in the past.

Two Bowls:

And these two bowls. One is gold-rimmed. I like the other one due to its shape. I’m always drawn to kitchen items, especially those of a vintage era quality.

Saturday Lunch:

Yesterday, Kendra came over with Marley, and Kasi went to pick up lunch for the four of us. We had Mexican from a local place I’d never tried before.

Then Kasi was going for a massage. Kendra was taking Marley to buy sandals for a cruise she’s going on with her dad and paternal grandparents.

The Kitties:

I think it’s so sweet when Ivy curls up in a ball to sleep. And below are the kittens (I will probably forever refer to them as “the kittens”). The two of them are together, as usual. They’re each other’s best buddy.

I don’t think I mentioned that the vet came on Tuesday to see Ivy for her annual check-up. Ivy has lost two pounds! That didn’t sound like a lot to me, but the vet said that was 10% of her weight, and she doesn’t want her to lose weight too fast.

I guess the kittens keep her busy, and she no longer gets treats. When I lived in the apartment, people would come in and get treats I always had for their dogs. Ivy didn’t like that they got treats, and she didn’t, so I ended up getting treats for her.

The last time the vet saw her, before I moved here, she weighed 20 pounds. Now she weighs 18 pounds.

What I’m Watching:

Ellen Barkin in Animal Kingdom

I’m still watching Animal Kingdom on Prime Video. I think it’s on Netflix, too.

It is based on the 2010 Australian film of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the criminal Pettingill family.

I’m watching the third season, and there are six seasons.

What I’m Reading:

Amazon

In David Baldacci’s Hour Game, a woman is found murdered in the woods. It seems like a simple case, but it soon escalates into a terrible nightmare. Someone is replicating the killing styles of the most infamous murderers of all time. No one knows this criminal’s motives—or who will be the next victim.

Two ex-Secret Service agents, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, have been hired to defend a man’s innocence in a burglary involving an aristocratic family. Then a series of secrets leads the partners right into a frantic hunt that is confounding even the FBI.

Now King and Maxwell are playing the Hour Game, uncovering one horrifying revelation after another and putting their lives in danger. For the closer they get to the truth, the closer they get to the most shocking surprise of all.

  1. This will sound crazy but . . . I grew up in Tulsa in the 50’s and 60’s. I moved to Florida in 1971. My mother had that exact bowl with the gold edges. We used it all the time. I always loved it❤️ and I think it was my grandmother’s before it was ours. I wonder if your bowl is our bowl? Coincidence for sure.

  2. I think it’s sad that the photos are no longer with the families. I wonder why they end up at the thrift stores. We are in Australia and a few years ago my sister found via facebook a cousin we have in North Carolina, that none of us here knew about. His mother and my mother are first cousins and his mother moved to the US (from Italy). A few months ago he asked my sister if she knew anyone in some photos he had. They were of my mother’s brother, we didn’t even have that photo. It was lovely to see these photos of relatives no longer with us.

Staying indoors watching more TV than usual due to extreme hot weather – heat advisories almost every day. I enjoy British streaming including BritBox and Acorn. Recently got involved in a series called ‘Heart Beat’ centered around a town and its Pub. Hard to understand the Yorkshire accent sometimes. Also like Madame Blanc mystery series – both without any violence. Stay cool.

  4. Lovely week. I really like the plates. I’m also fascinated by old photos. I have old photos of my family from the early 1900s. I enjoy looking at them every once in awhile.

  5. You really found some cool things at the thrift store. Those plates are beautiful.

Happy Sunday Brenda, Ivy and the kittens.
It sounds like you enjoyed a lovely family weekend with your grandchildren and your daughters.
I love to thrift! You found some great things!
I am not familiar with this show, I will have to look it up!
Have a wonderful week and stay cool!

  7. Thrifting is so fun. Who would have thought there’d be a market for a stack of random old photos. There should be a website… random old photos, to post these finds. Maybe someone, somewhere might recognize a long lost relative and be thrilled to get it. It is strange that people wouldn’t keep them. I guess after enough generations go by, and there’s nobody left to identify the people, then they probably just don’t care anymore. Interesting…
I’m glad you got to spend a couple of lovely days with your family. Family time is everything! (Unless they’re toxic!). Your other thrift finds are nice. I’m not sure what that stand is. It does sort of look like a warmer. I love your kitties! All of them! Good for Ivy losing 2 pounds! I wish I could, lol! Thank you for the Sunday snippets! They are my favorite!

  8. Love the little yellow flowers on the zinnias and the salad plates. Sweet Ivy is looking good and the kittens are so big! Glad you are having family visit but the best thing is that you introduced your grand daughter to thrifting! Take care and have a good week!

  9. I like the way you call the evening meal supper, that is what we called it growing up. My grandmother called the noon meal dinner. It has been very hot and humid here too. The potted plants on the porch have to be watered every day. The wildflower seeds I sprinkled on the ground in front of the porch a couple of months ago have finally started to look like something. Did you know that gladiolus spread? I didn’t! They are popping up where they were not planted. Ivy weighs 2 pounds less than my mini Goldendoodle Libby and her coloring reminds me of my Siberian Husky Kassie. Have a nice day.

Thrifting is indeed fun and those dishes are so pretty…reminds me of what my great grandma had (yea, I got virtually nothing even from my grandma, though I was the only granddaughter…my brother gave most of it to his stepdaughter who no doubt tossed them once she got better on hand…yea….one could write books about kin).

  11. Your two kitties are growing fast and Ivy looks just the same to me. How lovely to have three beautiful cats.
You are so blessed to have your family close by Brenda.
I just love your house and the way you decorate it. Our house is not big but sometimes I think I would like a smaller one, its not really the inside but the outside gardens which I love but they do take a lot of upkeep. On the other hand I don’t think I would have the energy to make a move.

  12. I love these updates of your simple, happy life. And I mean “simple” in the very best way possible…..contentment without materialism, and focus on family and pets. Not a shred of the toxic grasping for more and more that permeates today’s world….and makes it so miserable.
