The Dining Room & Coffee Corner

Today, I’m showing you the dining room and coffee corner. This is the center of the house, and the floor here slopes somewhat. You can’t see it, but you can feel a slight incline when you walk in or out of the room.

The magic happens when you show a house love. Loving a structure takes it from a mere building to being a real home. It will hold and comfort you for as long as you live there.

The Dining Room:

When I’m alone, I eat in the kitchen. But this dining table is where my family congregates. Typically, Kendra, Kasi, and I eat here when we gather for Saturday lunch and decide to bring food in instead of going out.

You can also see the door hinges that lead into the bathroom. To the far right, and practically even with the dining table, you can see a bit of the doorframe leading into my bedroom.

One corner of my dining room where I have a farmhouse style cupboard filled with my collection of transfer ware.

You can barely see something on the floor close to the bathroom door that I didn’t notice when I took the photo. It is one of Ivy’s red and white checked curtain ties she drags around at night.

She found the curtain ties somewhere in my closet that first night she came home with me six years ago. Ivy has some strange affinity for them.

Aside from the swirly toys we play fetch with, the curtain ties are her other favorite toy. Ivy gets upset when I take them away to wash them.

Farmhouse-Style Storage Cupboard:

The Dining Room & Coffee Corner with a view of the bedroom.

I found this farmhouse storage cupboard at Hobby Lobby, and Kendra picked it up for me. I’d been looking at it for years. Every time I walked into Hobby Lobby, I looked for it because it was my favorite piece of furniture.

When I moved here, I knew it would be perfect in my dining room and coffee corner area. I needed a place to store the dishes I don’t use daily. In this cupboard, I have all the various colored transferware I’ve collected over the years. As well as holiday-themed dishware.

The brown and white transferware cups and saucers on top of the cupboard are what I found at the Animal Rescue Thrift shop about a year ago. It’s an odd amount of teacups and saucers, and I scooped them up cheaply.

That same day, I purchased the two-tiered tray and later stained it. I knew when I saw the transferware and the two-tiered tray across the store that I would put the two together.

A view of the dining room going into my bedroom, and on the other side leading to my office.

The Coffee Corner:

On the other side of the bedroom door is my coffee corner. The rolling plastic storage shelves are filled with coffee and coffee accessories. I like having everything organized and in one place.

I call clear transparent storage “barely there storage.” It doesn’t take up visual space because you can see through it.

Home is where your heart lives. It is where you feel safest and most content.

The Dining Room with the coffee corner has everything I need to make coffee except for water.

I always like to have a jar of coffee beans with a candle in the center near my coffee bar because I love the smell of coffee.

Tip: Buy cheap coffee beans and fill up the jar. Then, add a taper candle of your choosing to place in the center.

The scent of coffee reaches me via the coffee beans in the open jar while I make myself a cup.

The roses in the green pitcher near the farmhouse cupboard.

The Tour Of The Dining Room & Coffee Corner:

The dining room is in the center of the house. It is at the end of the hallway where you enter the front door. And then the dining room leads to my office and the TV/plant room. And the dining room leads to my office, and the door to the backyard beyond.

I painted the little side table in my office space two shades of purple years ago, and I’ve got a few houseplants sitting on it.

You can’t see from this view, but the door to the TV/plant room is on the other side of this purple table.

The door you see with the window goes to the backyard.

Home is your happy place. It is your soft place to land.

In The Dining Room & Coffee Corner you see a pitcher of red roses.

I hope you enjoyed this tour of the dining room and coffee corner in this old house I call Mamie. Because I genuinely enjoy living within her walls and decorating the rooms here.

Getting To Know The Nextdoor Neighbor:

I’ve been getting to know the next-door neighbor. He came over last week, and we had a long chat. I can see that we’re going to be good friends. He’s lived in this neighborhood for many years.

He and I both love gardening and nature and animals.

Come spring, I will plant seeds, visit the nursery, and bring the outside new life. Plants will soften the angles of the house.

  9. Lovely, lovely, lovely, Brenda! Such a wonderful home for you. And now you’ve met a nice neighbor who enjoys some of the things you enjoy. So happy for you!

  10. Brenda, you’re a magician. You have made the gray walls you were so concerned about basically disappear.

    1. Now I wonder why I was so worried about the gray walls.

  11. Beautiful, homey and cozy! All the things I love.

    1. The neighbor next door said this house is so cozy.

  12. I follow a lot of home decor blogs, and especially those that use thrifted items. Yours is my favorite. So creative and homey. Ninety percent of what I own is from estate sales and thrift shops. I think its more interesting to collect over time, change it out to use more of it, and give away what I don’t need anymore. I’m fortunate to have granddaughters and grandsons who are interested in what I own and will gladly take it off my hands!

    1. The next-door neighbor, Smitty, went with me thrifting yesterday. I didn’t find anything. He and his wife foster pets and take care of strays so they’re always looking for things they need for the animals. She works out of town quite a bit, but we keep each other company here and there.

  13. Thanks for the tour of the dining room and coffee corner, it is beautiful. I have admired that farmhouse storage cupboard at the Hobby Lobby near me, but I donโ€™t have anywhere to put it in my house. Iโ€™m glad to hear that you have met your neighbor and have something in common. Is this the neighbor that has the barking dog?

    1. Yes, he is. I didn’t realize that he fosters pets. It’s funny. Before you get to know someone, sometimes you are wary or uncertain. But I’ve found that he’s a wonderful man and he’s becoming a great friend as well. He’s closer to Kendra’s age than to mine, but I’ve always gotten along with people of all ages.

  14. I am happy for you! What a wonderful house you get to make home. As usual you are doing such a beautiful and cozy job of decorating her. I so love Mamie.

    1. I love her too. And more and more, I see that Mamie is a perfect name for her. Meaning mother or grandmother, this old house both holds its occupants and keeps them safe.

  15. You have a beautiful home Brenda. I am so glad you are happy there. Sounds like the new neighbor will be a good friend to have when you have things in common.

    1. We can talk for hours and hours. He’s so kind to animals.

  16. Love it all!!! That new cabinet is adorable. So cute!!!

    Happy Holidays, Janie

  17. You’ve worked your magic once again. I love your house so much. You have a special touch.

    1. And it turns out that “the neighbor with the barking dog” is fast becoming my friend.

  19. Your new home is so cozy and homey. I love it.

    1. When I was a child, all I wanted was a cozy home. And now wherever I go, wherever I land, I do my best to make a house cozy and loved.

  20. I adore your dining room. Our Hobby Lobby has a similar farmhouse cupboard that I’ve always admired. Your plant seems like it’s part of the picture hanging above it. I like how you have a touch of Christmas in the room, but didn’t go overboard. And so much easier to dismantle after Christmas. Just seems like Christmas was here before we knew it this year. Thanks for sharing photos of your lovely home.

    1. I used to want to put Christmas everywhere, but getting older somehow makes me want to do less. I get tired of seeing it all pretty fast.

  21. Everything looking amazing…love the cupboard…you have such good taste…so happy for you๐Ÿ’•

    1. I like to get furniture there because it’s already put together. And they have great prices too.

  22. Hello Brenda,
You and Mamie are both a delight! I love the coffee bean and candle idea. I have to borrow it for my coffee corner! Merry Christmas !
    Bap

    1. I’ve been putting a candle in coffee beans for many years. I tried putting coffee beans in a patterned mug, but it just didn’t have the charm of the beans seen through the glass.

  23. Thank you for the tour. Your decorating is amazing and your descriptions are also. I love the purple cart and green plant. You have so much more space! Do you have neighbors on all sides?

    1. Yes, I have a single man on one side and a couple on the other. They all seem very nice.

  24. Good morning, Well…once again you have turned your home into a cozy place to be. I love the fact that you use so much color. I always felt life is to short to just use contractor white or grays. Mix them up with some fun stuff! I really enjoy seeing your progress on Mamie. You have a Merry Christmas and enjoy!

    1. I tried the neutral colors at the apartment, but it just didn’t satisfy my spirit like having color around me.

  25. Youโ€™ve created the same cozy, beautiful vibe here as each of your past homes had. Very tasteful! I love every single corner. When you first showed us the empty home it seemed kind of cold and uninviting. You took care of that in a matter of weeks!

    1. This old house was tired. It was not loved. You have to love a house to make it a home.
